About five years ago, after I first started my now-halted EarthBound Zero remake hack, I wound up modifying some of my tools to dump all the text out of EarthBound for easy-viewing. I then went on to try to turn it into a tool to let people translate the game. Although none of the above turned out so well (and I’ve since abandoned the translation tool, so please don’t use it, it’...Read More »

A couple days ago I posted about counterfeit EarthBound cartridges being sold. I thought it’d be interesting and possibly helpful if I posted good photos of the insides of a legit cartridge, so I took mine apart for reference: #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; } #galler...Read More »

I thought I had posted about this before, but I guess not! A fellow named John reminded me that Nintendo and a bunch of other people applied for a patent many years ago for the music battle system used in MOTHER 3. You can see more pics and info in the entire patent file right here: Patent (English, PDF) I think we first discovered this in 2004, around the time MOTHER 1+2 was first announced: P...Read More »

Whenever I play EarthBound, I always avoid getting Lucky Sandwiches since they’re pretty meh and I don’t like gambling with limited inventory space. But I’ve never really known how these Lucky Sandwiches actually work – all I knew was that they have random effects. A few years ago some skilled hackers dug into the ROM and found out a bunch of technical stuff, including how ...Read More »

A really common e-mail I get is something like this: Hey, I found this on eBay, I think it’s one of the EarthBound Zero prototypes! Can you tell me if it’s legit or not? I get this question so often that I thought it’d be a good idea to make a post about it for people to reference. Generally, if it hasn’t been posted about here or on the front page of Starmen.Net, then it&#...Read More »

A good while back I posted some pics of what EarthBound carts look like on the inside. Now here’s what MOTHER 2 carts look like! Hard to believe that something so bland and circuit-y secretly contains such awesome stuff inside! ...Read More »

This topic came up in the last post about the sample/prototype EarthBound board currently on eBay, so I thought I’d make a post about it here. Here is what EarthBound looks like if you strip it down and take the case off: And here’s an EarthBound cartridge we currently believe is counterfeit: (Pics and info courtesy of blehlza, see here for more details) It’d be nice to dump th...Read More »

Until now, there hasn’t been a page or a resource that listed all of the known EarthBound Zero prototypes and information relating to them. Hopefully this will help fix that. What we know: We know there are at least five prototype Earth Bound NES cartridges in existence. Four are floating around out there in collectors’ hands. One is verfied to exist inside Nintendo of America, thanks ...Read More »

EarthBound hacking has kind of quieted down compared to what it was years ago, but in these past few months some huge new breakthroughs have been made, such as Mr. Accident’s CCScript app and Rufus’s EB++ stuff. There are other things going on too, but I can get into that in another update sometime. Basically, all this recent work has made impossible things possible. This is partly tha...Read More »

There’s a bug in MOTHER 3 (in the Japanese version and translated version) where Dr. Andonuts’ trash can displays completely wrong text. I chalked it up to a bug that I had seen before while working on the translation, but after working on this I realized that assumption was wrong. Anyway, since Jeffman has more experience with that aspect of the hacking, he gave it a look-see and mana...Read More »
