A Swedish EarthBound fan by the name of Anders recently sent me a big ol’ PDF file containing scans of magazines that covered EarthBound and EarthBound-related stuff. Here’s what Anders says: The first two pages contain a (US import) review of Earthbound from the magazine Super POWER, #11 1995. […] A two-reviewer system was used and, as can be seen in the two boxes left of the fi...Read More »

This is pretty old by now, but way back when MOTHER 3 was *just* released, the guys at 1up.com made a video review (of sorts) about MOTHER 3. It even includes info about Starmen.Net’s past petitions and stuff. You can see it here: For reference, this was years before the fan translation was released. You might also want to read Jeremy Parish’s review of EarthBound, published at about ...Read More »

I’ve caught a few Classic Game Room videos in the past, and it looks like there’s a new MOTHER 1+2 review video up, posted a few days ago: If you’re a regular visitor here this probably isn’t anything new to you, I just like that MOTHER 1+2 is getting attention, I feel like it’s often overlooked. It’s a shame it never got released outside of Japan, that would&#...Read More »

yp95 sent me a link to this interesting review of EarthBound: He references another video of his, which you can see here: The troll-o-meter is definitely off the charts, but then again you never know… For what it’s worth, I think EarthBound has many flaws and it probably isn’t even my favorite game of all time – and I assume that’s probably the same for most folks h...Read More »

Ultra translator Chewy has come through again – this time she’s translated a review of MOTHER 1 by Satoshi Tajiri, who went on to create Pokemon in the 90s. This review actually predates Pokemon, so I wonder how much influence MOTHER 1 (and maybe MOTHER 2) had on his inspiration for Pokemon’s game design. At any rate, it’s a long and interesting read – I like how he d...Read More »

Way back in 2007 GameInformer did a several-page piece on EarthBound. Even though I own this issue, I totally forgot about it until Joshua sent in these scans: It’s interesting to see how the modern gaming media is much more positive about EarthBound than the gaming press was back in 1995. ...Read More »

I’d never heard of the “Finding the Plot” series before – here’s their take on EarthBound: I’m curious to know what fans think of EarthBound’s plot. What do you think – is its plot ordinary and not very unique as far as games go? Or is it super crazy unique stuff? ...Read More »

So for a long time there’ve been these EarthBound videos by a group called Navgtr. I still have no idea who/what they are or do, some people have told me they’re connected to a cruise line, but that doesn’t seem right at all. So if anyone has more info, let me know. Anyway, check out this classic EarthBound review they did: And here’s part 2, which covers how to beat the f...Read More »

While trying to find a full scan of this really neat MOTHER 1 ad (to no avail 🙁 ) I ran across the Famicom Tsuushin reviews of MOTHER 1 from 1989. Famicom Tsuushin is what we now know as Famitsu. Anyway, here are their reviews translated into English – you’ll see that a lot of the complaints Western fans have about the game were actually shared by Japanese players too. These come fr...Read More »

Dan F. e-mailed me to let me know that the MOTHER 3 fan translation had been mentioned briefly in a Swedish magazine called LEVEL: It’s from the November 2009 issue, in an article about fan translations. The blurb about MOTHER 3 supposedly translates to something like: “Mother 3 – The sequel to Earthbound was released, after extreme ordeals, in Japan 2006. Two years later a fan ...Read More »
