EarthBound / MOTHER Music

MOTHER 1 Soundtrack

This is a great album. It isn't music straight from the game - it's awesome stuff with real instruments and vocals. The booklet info is neat, too. A reprint (with extra stuff) was done around M1+2's release. Highly recommended!

SAKEROCK: Songs of Instrumental

SAKEROCK and Itoi get along well, so they did a cover of Eight Melodies for this CD. They've also released other stuff they collaborated on, like T-shirts. This CD is lesser known by EB fans, but still easily obtainable.

MOTHER 2 Soundtrack

This isn't as fancy as the MOTHER 1 soundtrack - it's mostly in-game music as-is. But there are some remixes at the end. The booklet for this is also pretty cool. A reprint was done in 2004.

Game Music Concert #2

This CD has two orchestrated songs from MOTHER 2: "Because I Love You" and the Onett song. They show up on eBay and YAJ regularly, so grab 'em if you see 'em!

Game Music Concert #3

This CD also contains an orchestrated version of "Because I Love You". I don't know if it differs from the one in Volume #2 or not. Anybody know?

Famicom Best Music Selection

I don't know much about this CD except that it has a strange late 80's rap music-sounding version of Eight Melodies on it. It's pretty weird. But not many people know about it.

Family Computer Best Collection Vol. 2

This CD apparently has some remixed version of Bein' Friends on it. I've never heard it, and I don't think very many even know about this disc. If anyone has a copy, let me know how it is.

MOTHER 1+2 Original Soundtrack

This album has a mixture of MOTHER 1 and MOTHER 2 music. The songs sound like they do in the games, but with better-sounding instruments. It's hard to explain. It's kind of relaxing in a way.

MOTHER 3+ (CD Version)

The first MOTHER 3 soundtrack to be released. If you preordered it, you would've gotten a Mr. Saturn phone strap. This is a good album and features lots of DCMC songs. "We Miss You" can't be overlooked either!

MOTHER 3+ (iTunes Version)

This was released a little bit after the CD version. It includes a bonus track and is available outside of Japan! You can also download the booklet here.

This was released some time after MOTHER 3+. It contains tracks that didn't get onto 3+. It seems to be the fan favorite, and I concur. Tons of free bonus content here!

Oto no Ishi

This is an unofficial album filled with techno remixes. It's pretty popular among fans and can get pricy. Incidentally, "Oto no Ishi" means "Sound Stone".

Oto no Ishi 2

The first album did well enough to warrant a second, and it's just as popular. It also features MOTHER 3 remixes this time around. If you can afford it, check it out!

Protractor - Saturnians Go Home

This is an unofficial album, but a lot of work was put into it and people seem to like it, so I've included it here. I haven't seen it on any auctions, so you might have to learn Japanese to order it.

Other Doujin CDs

There are of course other fan-made CDs out there, but sometimes they only feature one EB/MOTHER song and aren't that great. I can't realistically list them all here, so check around eBay and YAJ and see what you can find.

Grade School Textbook: Music 6

Apparently an old Japanese grade school music textbook included "Eight Melodies". It was published in 1992, so this is really rare and I have yet to find a copy of it anywhere.

MOTHER 2 Piano Book

This is filled with MOTHER 2 sheet music. It's meant for people learning to play the piano. It has 15 different pieces, most of them from major towns and/or areas in the game. Pretty sweet.

Ordering from Japanese Sites

I've included links to places like Amazon Japan and Yahoo! Auctions Japan (YAJ for short), but ordering things from these places can be kind of tricky.

Amazon Japan: Ordering from Amazon Japan isn't too bad, but you might be scared by all the Japanese text at first. But fear not! On most Amazon Japan pages is a link you can click that will turn a lot of the site's text into English for you. The other thing you'll need to know is that 1. Amazon Japan can't and won't ship games outside of Japan and 2. if you're ordering a used item, not all sellers will ship internationally. But otherwise Amazon Japan is a cinch to order from.

Yahoo! Auctions Japan: This is an absolute treasure trove of MOTHER merchandise. Sadly, it's not very convenient to use if you're not in Japan. Most sellers won't ship outside of Japan and will probably be freaked out if you ask them a question in English. If you're not in Japan and don't know Japanese, then you'll need to use a service like Celga that will bid on stuff for you and then ship you the stuff once they receive it.
