Tips for Buying EarthBound

February 9th, 2016 | MOTHER 3, Rumors

A few days back some rumors started swirling about MOTHER 3 being localized outside of Japan. I’ve gotten a lot of messages and questions since then, but I don’t know what’s going on with these rumors. I hope they’re accurate, but I haven’t seen anything to substantiate them on my end. I’m as interested about what happens next as you are.

If the rumors were real, I’d be interesting to see how different it would be from your translation

Noah said on Feb. 9, 2016

If you weren’t also busy working on the EarthBound book, I’d suspect that you were maybe working with Nintendo on the M3 release… But that would be a whole lot of work to do all at once.

good to see a response on this from you mato

Anonymous said on Feb. 9, 2016

Aw, I was taking you being so quiet about this as a sign that you knew something you didn’t want us to know yet or maybe were involved somehow. Basically, something that would’ve given these rumors some merit. How disappointing.

Robfozz said on Feb. 9, 2016

I hope Nintendo doesn’t alter the source material too much. I can easily see things like Magypsies and the Mermen being censored or altered as well as some plot points. I hope they prove me wrong like they did with Bayonetta 2 but I’m kinda doubtful.

Covarr said on Feb. 9, 2016

Aww, when you hadn’t responded to the rumors before, I’d kinda been hoping there was an NDA involved. I guess this means there’s not. 🙁

Anonymous said on Feb. 9, 2016

I don’t mean to be too much of a conspiracist, but I think it’s perfectly possible that Mato has been contacted by Nintendo. After all, he’s just reporting that people are reporting rumors, which they are.

I really don’t think that’s the case, but for those of you like believing that, it’s still possible.

Ryan said on Feb. 9, 2016

This is exactly what someone secretly working for Nintendo would say! Mother 3 in English confirmed.

Esper said on Feb. 9, 2016

I’m impressed with how patiently and kindly Mato just said “STOP MESSAGING ME ABOUT MOTHER 3 RUMORS”

Anyway, just keep those expectations in check, everyone.

Ness1985 said on Feb. 9, 2016

Chances are if Nintendo is actually doing it with their translation, it’ll be neutered, butchered & heavily censored.

SmaMan said on Feb. 10, 2016

Part of me wants to believe won’t censor their translation since they know just how big the following behind Mother is. Some brought up Bayonetta as a good example.

Then again, we’ve all been seeing what they’ve been doing with Fire Emblem: Fates and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Guess it just depends on who’s working the localization desk that day.

NessinEagleland said on Feb. 10, 2016

Noticing that mato isnt responding to the conspiracy theories that hes somehow involved.

Honestly i do hope NOA americanizes the game a bit.a lot of the cultural changes they made for earthbound like the eraser eraser really resonated with me back then.

And mother 3, with changing pokeys name back to porky. The magypsies, the mermen… those aspects felt alien to me. Out of character to how mother series has been in the past

Anonymous said on Feb. 10, 2016

Hopefully this will finally get Mother fans to address their mental health issues and rejoin the rest of society.

vince94 said on Feb. 10, 2016

They know how attached/devoted we are to the world and the characters, I don’t think they’d change much. The backlash would be overwhelming.

Jerky said on Feb. 10, 2016

I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be true. Contrary to what seemingly every other EB fan thinks, I really don’t think Nintendo ever had anything against translating this game. It just so happens that this was the best time to do it. They A.) obviously don’t have to distribute it to stores and package it, and B.) It’s not being released at the absolute tail end of a system’s life (though with the NX possibly around the corner that’s debatable.) Anyway, it’d be nice to actually have official Mother 3 translations (Sorry, you guys did an amazing job, but he’s always been “Yokuba” to me) I’m also quite interested in seeing if they keep it “Pokey” or “Porky;” I’d personally hope for the former. I think the extra work they did with the recently released Mario Advance 4 by including the e-reader levels could lend some credibility to this rumor. They’re clearly willing to go above and beyond for just downloadable VC games. Like I said though, wouldn’t be surprised either way. I’ve had my fill of Mother 3 by this point, so this would just be a little bonus. I’ll also take a moment to agree with NessinEagleland: I would prefer the usual NOA charm and treatment. The localization differences are part of Earthbound’s history. There’s almost (Almost!) a difference between a MOTHER fan and an EARTHBOUND fan. The localization of these titles IS part of what makes Earthbound, EARTHBOUND. I know a lot of “purists” are preparing themselves to be offended by “censorship” with whatever NOA might change, but from the view of this Earthbound fan, I have faith that they’d do Mother 3 just as much service as Earthbound (if they actually are working on it.)

Mother2fan said on Feb. 10, 2016

I really hope NOA releases it, but I would also have a very hard time accepting a translation other than Mato’s. The game I fell in love with (it’s my favourite game) is HIS translation. Not someone else’s. ^-^

Drake Wolf said on Feb. 10, 2016

Sincerely, I want this rumor to be true. Sadly, I know that I should take that rumor with a grain of salt. Remember the M3-KM carts and the fake European release date? That’s why I’m being cautious.

KingOfSwords said on Feb. 10, 2016

Breaking news: MOTHER 3 rumored for Western release, just as it has been every day for the last ten years or more.

L.B. 367 said on Feb. 11, 2016

I hope they relesead the game with the translation of Mato, Mato if you read this, i wanna thank you so much for the translation of this game, is so wonderful, and now i’m replaying Mother 1, the GBA version, i first play the NES version of OAD, in spanish, whatever, i hope that the game don’t have censore if Nintendo localized the game, but well, it’s only a rumor for now, but i really want that they finish this history localizing this game.

It’s a shame that they never release the GBA cartridge for those who want a oficial physical copy, because the GBA era past away a long time, well, it’s almost all to i have to say, i wish good luck for all the fans that want this game.

Paul said on Feb. 11, 2016

Didn’t Mato say that he had offered to give the code for the fan translation to Nintendo?

Would Nintendo have any reason not to accept that offer, other than lack of interest in localizing Mother 3?

If Nintendo is interested in localizing Mother 3, Mato should be the first to know.

Paul said on Feb. 11, 2016

Until Nintendo gives Mato a cease-and-desist order about the fan translation (at the very least), I’m not convinced that they’re really interested in localizing Mother 3.

Jerky said on Feb. 12, 2016

Again, as awesome of a job as the translation team did, NOA using a fan translation would seem really unprofessional on their part. I’m no expert on legal stuff either, but as far as I know it’s pretty legal to make your own translation and distribute it. The patch itself isn’t harmful to sales and Starmen.net certainly isn’t distributing ROMS, so the lack of a cease and desist orders isn’t really a good indication either way. Not to mention…why would you want to pay for something you’ve been using for free?

Anonymous said on Feb. 12, 2016

Reasons Nintendo doesn’t automatically pick up the fan translation:
-That’s not how they want to portray their series (as in, they want to localize or censor things differently)
-It’s a bit of a legal mess because it involves other people’s work, so they need all of them to sign a bunch of those probably, and they have to make sure that what THEY did is okay legally. That might be a lot more hassle than just making your own translation
-Using someone else’s work to sell it when it was already free can be viewed as wrong, even if the creators approve.

Alec said on Feb. 12, 2016

I honestly will never understand why anyone would think Nintendo would use the fan translation for MOTHER 3. They wouldn’t. It’s obvious that using it would be considered lazy of them and it would be a legal nightmare to deal with.

I can only imagine Nintendo doing their own translation for it if that were to happen since they have high standards and SEGA did use fan material and they got in trouble for it. This should be obvious to anyone who knows how Nintendo works with stuff like this. However, I want to hope we at least get something at E3 2016. I just want my favorite game out so I can buy it and be happy.

Sega actually contracted 2 Sonic Fan game developers to do the mobile ports of the first 2 Sonic games, with the engine they had developed. They even reversed engineered the games before they got hired by Sega.

However, I doubt it’s something nintendo would do, Sega seems to be more lenient.

That Guy said on Feb. 12, 2016

Plenty of folk here saying “Ah, just more rumors, just like all the other rumors.” Those rumors were before the game was put on the VC in Japan. It appears that all but one of the “rumors” have turned out to be true. America’s got M1, and M2. Japan has all three. Considering we didn’t have any of the Mother games before 2013, I’d say that’s progress. Just one more to go in the West. If history repeats itself, the Mother 3 “rumor” will turn out to be true.

I’m wearing my beautiful tinfoil hat so I assume that Mato-san signed a NDA so he can’t tell us he translated Mother 3 for Nintendo. 😛

I’m not particularly getting my hopes up, honestly. I would love to see such a masterpiece finally get its international release, opening it up for more people to explore, but if there’s anything I’ve learned in my life, it’s best not to get your hopes up.

Bahob the Warrior said on Feb. 19, 2016

If the rumors are true, NoA will have a new Wii U owner. 🙂

And, in a perfect world they take up Mato’s offer of using the Fan Translation.

huh... said on Feb. 23, 2016

Yeah again, mato is usually much more involved in the comments section. I think he was asked by nintendo to somewhat dispell the rumor when you consider that he didnt report this right away either

DJMankiewitz said on Feb. 27, 2016

I think everyone’s grasping at straws on this one. Mato’s response pretty clearly indicates he doesn’t know anything and is pretty sure there’s no reason to believe these rumors. So, you’d have to basically accuse him of lying.

Further, Mato has stated in the past he will immediately take down the M3 translation should Nintendo start working on a US version. If Mato had been contacted, the translation patch would be down. I’m not saying Nintendo ISN’T translating Mother 3, what I’m saying is this is no different than any of hte past rumors. The fact that Earthbound and Beginnings have been released doesn’t mean it’s time to stop looking for evidence and believe every single rumor.

This isn’t me being a downer, this is me saying “don’t stop pestering Nintendo about bringing the game to the US”. If this rumor results in NOA no longer hearing requests and them assuming the demand has faded too much to be worthwhile, well, that wouldn’t be good I think. Let me put it another way. If Nintendo started working on a translation, with Mato, they wouldn’t keep it a secret. I mean, are you kidding me? They’d put up a Nintendo Direct announcing that project the day it started. Until that announcement, let’s keep bugging them. As it stands, this whole thread reads like a conspiracy blog about the President’s subtle tells that he’s a lizard man. Be wary of confirmation bias. Then again, I might just be a plant by Nintendo trying to keep you guessing for…. reasons? WHO’S PAYING ME?! Hmm, now that I think about it someone here is probably going to respond with “woosh” because this has been an ongoing joke that went over my head. I mean, I completely misunderstood “The Master” as a movie promoting scientology instead of a parody of it, so it could happen.

Anyway, I’ve said before I wouldn’t worry about Nintendo censoring Mother 3 at any rate. Modern NOA is a lot more lenient on issues of death when bringing over Japanese games, and they’ve had plenty of dark stuff in recent games brought here, so I don’t worry about that. The magypsies shouldn’t be an issue considering Birdo, and Fassad shouldn’t be an issue either, so long as they change a few of the good NPC’s names to sound middle eastern too. He’s basically just Jafar, after all.

Zoticos said on Feb. 27, 2016

How dare you lie to us DJMankiewitz, it is obvious you are a secret plant working for Nintendo, a piranha plant to be precise. I have evidence.

In the beginning of this article you mention everyone is grasping at straws. Why specifically straws? Well, it is obviously because as a piranha plant, stuck to the ground, all you ever see is grass as so the first though that comes to mind as a plant if of course, straws! Easily reveals you true identity as a plant. And I know your motive as well!

How else can you continue to earn your tiny salary from your boss, Bowser, if he doesn’t earn more gold by appearing in more Mario Party games?? A Mother 3 translation would completely botch a future MP release, so as the plant you are, you desperately try to stop this botch by spreading evil roots in comment section of Mother 3 discussions. How rude of you. This is further supported by your statement: “WHO’S PAYING ME?!”, your income has become so tiny now due to the lack of people playing Mario Party, you’re forgetting who is actually paying you in the first place!!!

If I were you, I would just grow home now and go back to eating straws as the true piranha plant you are!

So I’ve recently seen The Good Dinosaur. Not Pixar’s best, by a long shot, but better than Cars. I wouldn’t worry about the hallucinating mushroom island being censored though. Good Dinosaur has a similar scene, more reminiscent of the “pink elephants” bit from Dumbo.

Kid’s entertainment has a long tradition of getting kids drunk/high.

“Catch a new Nintendo Direct on March 3 at 2 p.m. PT for updates on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS titles planned for launch through summer 2016.” nintendo.com

If this is happening, we should hear about it tomorrow.

Noah said on Mar. 2, 2016

I’m pretty sure this is what went down.

Nintendo: “Hey Tomato, we’re secretly releasing Mother 3 officially in a couple months, so we need you to take down your fan translation.”

Mato: “OK, but everybody will ask questions and suspect what’s happening if I do that.”

Nintendo: “Oh yeah. OK, keep it up for now until the day we announce it. Prob around March 3.”

Noah said on Mar. 2, 2016

ALSO, keep in mind that Mato was never asked to take down his Mother 1+2 translation when EarthBound Beginnings was released, so there’s no reason to expect them to be all hasty with shutting the fan translation down.

AwelCruiz said on Mar. 2, 2016

Though I’m sure he will voluntarily if Nintendo ever announces an official localization.

Nope, nothing. But it’s almost April 20th (blaze it), 2016, MOTHER 3’s 10th anniversary. And there was that Twitter leak from last month, so we had better see what happens then.

PK Wreckage said on Mar. 23, 2016

I honestly haven’t played m3 yet because it is only available on a ROM. I just loaded up my Wii U with money just in case mother 3 got released…I can’t pur into words how good it felt to pay $300 +$9.99 for Earthbound vs. the ridiculous $1K I’ve seen. I owned Earthbound on the SNES but got rid of it because of…reasons…I saw the ending and cried pretty badly when I viewed it, thinking “I’m never going to play this anyway since Nintendo isn’t going to release it.” If they release it next month, I will be a happy, happy person Nintendo. PS – Thanks so much to Mato for a phenomenal translation from someone who used to work in the industry as a PM.
