Tips for Buying EarthBound

April 24th, 2015 | EarthBound, Images

A few months ago I posted about an official MOTHER 2 New Year’s Card that a few staff members received back in 1995. I had never heard of the card before then, and all we had was a sort of blurry photo:

A few fans were like, “Hey, maybe we should try to remake that ourselves!” And then MightyYT went and did just that:

And here it is translated into English based on my translation in the old post:

But that’s not all! Here’s how the re-creation process happened from start to finish!

And, just for fun, here’s a version with the photograph guy!

If you like this, there’s more stuff on the Starmen.Net forum thread here, including a 2015 version AND template files so you can make your own scene too!

Amazing stuff, MightyYT!

Thanks for the shout out, Mato! With college and life stuff, I was away from it for a few years, but I’m glad to be back contributing fun projects to the EarthBound fan community!

Also Mato, I was wondering if you could shed some light on a few holiday elements in the image? Obviously there’s a nod to Christmas with the bald guy on the far left dressed as Santa, and a nod to Hanukkah with Tracy and the “I <3 NY" t-shirt guy playing with a dreidel, but what are some of the other custom sprites referencing, like:

Ness and Paula dressed in kimonos and Paula holding (possibly) a bouquet?

The trees/plants on either side of the entrance to the house behind Jeff and Poo?

The toy or balloon, with a string attached to it, that's stuck in the tree in the top-left?

Also, is there any significance to that family of animals (maybe warthogs) in the bottom-right?

[Sorry for double-posting]

On another topic, how do I change my avatar here?

That’s why I love our fandom.

MightyYT: I always love your work, so again, amazing job on this!

Off the top of my head, I don’t know the significance of everything in this pic either. But Ness & Paula are in kimonos because it’s a common thing in Japan to visit a shrine in fancy garb when New Year’s rolls around. (Here’s some info and pics: http://www.thejapanfaq.com/celebrations.html )

The tree things are Japanese New Year’s decorations, but I don’t think there’s a single one style of decoration, it seems to vary from place to place.

The pig things are because 1995 was the year of the boar according to the Chinese zodiac year thing.

Not sure what that weird balloon thingy is 🙁
