Supergamerk sent me this video of a battle with Diamond Dog in EarthBound. It starts out normal but ends in a silly way:
I wonder if this would be useful for speedrunners in some way, or if there’s a quicker way to beat Diamond Dog.

Did they just really diamondize the diamond dog. B-but… He’s already a diamond. Okay, alright.
The dog made out of diamonds was turned into solid diamond. Spooky.
I guess the Carbon Dog was finally

Diamondized.
These last few updates have really been great, keep em up mato!
I guess in Soviet Fire Spring Diamond Dog bites… er…
It’s diamondception, there you go.
G-Two: YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!
Now this is irony, if I’ve ever seen it. 😛
Dude… that’s just funny. I can only think that it would be super fun to do in a TAS (tool-assisted speedrun), but that would be super hard to do in real-time. It would also have to be a “100%” or otherwise not a “glitched” speedrun, because nowadays, you can glitch the game to run the end credits before even leaving Onett… But if anyone ever does a “full game” TAS, this would be a sweet trick to use. Make the Diamond Dog diamondize himself to win the battle… that’s insane. xD
I don’t know a lot about TAS stuff. Is there a way to make the outcome of Diamond Dog biting itself leading to diamondization more likely? Because there’s a pretty significant jump cut in this video (Ness/Poo PP drop, Paula’s HP suddenly rolling), so it’s unclear how long it actually took. If there is a way, then that would be pretty helpful.
Kids and their technology…
@Coreyback
The way a TAS works is that the random number generator in a game will always produce the same results given the same conditions and the computer can do the same button presses on every attempt. Knowing that, the person creating the TAS can try a bunch of different inputs to set up the random number generator to spit out the same results every time.
I doubt this would be useful in a real time due to all of the randomness leading up to it, but it sure is curious! As an aside, outside of Poo mirroring specific enemies, is this the only way to diamondize an enemy? I can’t remember it ever happening to me in the past. Kinda odd seeing the enemy stay on screen during the you win. Fun puzzle run idea!

@Coreyback If you’re wondering about the jumpcut, that was about eight minutes of footage being cut out. I discovered this by playing around on a ROM one day. Then I decided to see if it was possible on console. It was. I would LOVE to see this in a TAS if it is faster.
Now THIS would be an awesome challenge for the next Earthbound FanFest. Defeat Diamond Dog with diamondization.
LOL! I’m sitting here watching, thinking, what the heck is going to happen. I never expected that! haha.
Ironically owned by its own attack, Brainshocking an opponent is fun!
Well, looks like Diamond Dog can truly live up to his name!
If I were Ness, I’d follow the BitF strip and stick up the “For Sale” sign to sell Diamond Dog after that fight.
This is kinda similar to FF4, if you use Reflect on a enemy with a second form like Mother Bomb, Dark Elf, the Four Fiends in the Tower of Babil, and even Zeromus into skipping their second forms and winning the battle.
With ridiculous manipulation of turn order and RNG, maybe a multi-bottle rocket, brainshock, diamond dog suicides to get it in one round? (My math may be off.)
I don’t know if it can attack the turn it changes/spawns.
Fastest method I know for pretty much anything troubling you in the game save that bit about crying to your mommy at the end… is Jeff + Rabbit’s Foot + deadliest bottle rockets money can buy at the time.
That was… Bizarre.
