Tips for Buying EarthBound

July 26th, 2014 | EarthBound, Videos

Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation is known for his love of EarthBound, and after all this time he’s finally made a video about the game! You can see it here:

It’s a pretty quick look at the game and if you’re new to Zero Punctuation you might be pretty confused by its review format. It’s cool to see it finally getting reviewed, though!

Thanks to everyone (all several dozen of you!) who e-mailed me simultaneously about this update, that was some neat inbox magic 😛

I never liked zero punctuation. And this review did not make any exception

Love Zero Punctuation, and thoroughly enjoyed this review.

A Zero Punctuation review of a game I like that doesn’t make me want to throw Yahtzee in a trash compactor? What sorcery is this?!

Yahtzee is an interesting fellow. By and large, I disagree with most of his reviews (though I still respect his opinion and think he makes some good points). However, it’s the places where we agree that make me most interested. It is very bizarre that two games he loves violate a lot of his own rules for how games should work. Silent Hill 2, for example, has some pretty outdated and awkward “survival horror” controls (especially compared to modern style controls from games like Dead Space that try to keep players out of immersion ruining menus whenever possible, assigning healing items and reloads to single button presses and so on), but he still loves it (so do I). As I said, an interesting person.

I never understood this show. Why is bashing on a game without any particular reason is entertaining to some people?

That guy is just a manchild that must grow up ASAP.
(Not saying this because of the review, but because of him. I dislike him so much)

Oh cool another game reviewer who will reinforce my views on EarthBound. Enjoying a game by myself is not enough. I need to get happy or mad at reviews!

I have no problem with Yahtzee. It’s just one guy’s opinion and he presents it in a quick and generally funny way. I don’t always agree with him, but then again what’s the point of seeking out a review if you’re just going to agree with it anyway?

Hyperstar96 said on Jul. 28, 2014

@Queue A review is supposed to use reasoning and logic to explain one’s views. Yahtzee constantly violates his own opinions on how a game “should” be, complains about the tiniest oversights while completely ignoring anything that’s good (or, alternately, tries to put an objectively bad spin on any good aspect of a game), and has an INHUMAN bias against Nintendo. For instance, in his E3 2014 review, he praised Uncharted 4 (which only got a short, action-less teaser that revealed absolutely nothing) and how it’s the game that everyone wanted, while insulting the new Zelda (which had a full teaser and mini-interview with the game’s director saying what the game will be like), saying there wasn’t any information revealed, and that it’s just an excuse to pander to the fanboys and doesn’t count.

AwelCruiz said on Jul. 28, 2014

Yahtzee doesn’t have a bias against Nintendo. If anything, he doesn’t have a PRO Nintendo bias, since he didn’t grow up playing Nintendo games.

Also his “praise” of Uncharted 4 was meant to be sarcastic.

The subtleties of sarcasm goes over some people’s heads. Oh well, to their own.

Doesn’t Yahtzee love Metroid Prime though? He also likes Eternal Darkness, which isn’t Nintendo made but was exclusively on a Nintendo platform.

Also being negative is generally what is expected of him, it’s kinda like the Angry Video Game Nerd.

AwelCruiz said on Jul. 28, 2014

Exactly. Yahtzee has often stated that nobody thinks he’s funny when he’s being nice to a game, so he tends to focus on the negatives. That said, when he likes a game, he says so.

And he has enjoyed several Nintendo games, like EarthBound (obviously), Metroid Prime, the Paper Mario series, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Eternal Darkness, and even admitted that the Super Mario Galaxy games were fun and a return to form (particularly the first one).

he’s right you know. the game’s a slog to start, it was designed to be simple (drawn by a child), it throws the creepy at you as though from nowhere, was badly marketed and implemented mechanics that are helpful but baffling.

if you think that’s wrong you were probably playing the wrong game.

you don’t have to like yahtzee. he’s made games to show he knows what he’s talking about, and he doesn’t hate all the games he reviews, but you don’t have to like him. he’s still not wrong in this case, even if you know why the points he raises are like they are. so does he.

Yeah, I don’t think so.

An actually reasonable person said on Aug. 24, 2014

Wow. When he’s negative, the worst he gets is being negative on video games.

But when a post on the internet pops up about him, you people who get so bent out of shape about his gaming opinions being “hateful” and “negative” actually spew personal insults at the guy. “Throw him in a trash compactor”? “manchild”? Classy, guys. Real classy.

You know… A lot of the comments here remind me just how self-righteous, hypocritical, awful and legitimately bad people a lot of YOU guys, are.

Are differing opinions really worth getting this butt-hurt about? Really?

I think it’s you people that need to re-evaluate your attitude, not him.

And all of this hate on an Earthbound site for what? …a positive review of a guy who likes Earthbound?

And yet, the great majority of the negativity is coming from people crying in the comments. Amazing.

@An actually reasonable person

I don’t watch random game reviewers anymore but that comment you wrote is pretty spot-on.
