Tips for Buying EarthBound

May 13th, 2014 | EarthBound, Videos

There’s a recent new YouTube series that looks at old games… but it’s a little different from the usual Adjective Game Reviewer style. One of the latest games to get reviewed is EarthBound – give it a look!

Man, I love all that sprite work – nice job!

Pretty good review 🙂 but I felt that his dislikes were booty. I mean he said battles are tooooooo long which I never thought that and too many encounters which i never felt. I never even heard anyone else say that but I guess it’s good cuz his review is different

I’ve often heard that good sprite art, not to mention sprite animation, is a tedious task that requires a lot of skill. So when I see videos like this that have ten times the animation of your average 16-bit bit game, I often wonder how they do it. It can’t be all that easy, can it (and by easy I mean, not take 4-5 months)?

Hey guys! Thanks so much for checking out the video. It’s really cool to see it pop up here, on EBC. The Mother series is really special to me and I know how important it is to you folks as well. Even if you couldn’t necessarily agree with everything I say, I hope you still got a kick out of it. It was a lot of fun to make. If you have any questions or just want to shoot some messages back and fourth, feel free to send a PM to my youtube account.

Thanks again, so much, for watching!

In sort of a response to Mac, honestly, though I love Earthbound as much as anyone, I actually COMPLETLY agree with all his gripes about the game and I think they’re all completly valid and very true.

Battles DO slog on forever at times, and it does get very irritating the way attacks miss way more often than they connect. And nobody really denies that the game’s Inventory system is terrible, even Mato, as I recall has leveled that criticism at the game more than a few times.

Earthbound is a great game, it is a very special game, but it is not and never has been a perfect game. Earthbound does have issues with it… it’s just that these are relatively small issues compared to everything else that makes the game excellent, deep, witty, and full of charm, wit and heart in all of the ways that it counts. Of course, the game does far more right than it does wrong.

But objectively and fairly speaking, Earthbound’s battle system honestly is not the best or most well balanced in games of it’s type , when it comes to it’s overall gameplay and balance (not even close, in fact), the limited inventory space is tedious and frustrating and grinds the game to a screeching halt many times during it.

I feel the overall gameplay criticisms of Earthbound are actually quite valid. And this is coming from someone who owns multiple copies of the game, loves it to death and has played through it at least 12 times from start to finish, in my lifetime.

Oh boy… the inventory system. I’m sort of okay with it since I like strategy games like Advance Wars and enjoy micromanaging a bit anyway, but it’s still a pain. And if you want more proof that it is imperfect, I refer you to the Rock Candy glitch. I guess that’s more thanks to the condiment system being bugged, but who uses condiments anyway when you have so few inventory spaces anyway, and it spreads onto ANY food item you use? I don’t know about you, but I don’t go around with nothing but burgers. I commonly get other food items from gift boxes, sometimes I want to use a Skip Sandwich, sometimes my designated Pizza-using party member dies and I have to give the pizza to someone else so I can use it… condiments, uhg. Rock glitch, yay! Otherwise, I stay away. Don’t get me started on Jeff with all his battle items, lol. He doesn’t have any space for anything, ever. I usually fill the spare space with any kind of Bottle Rockets I can get my hands on.
