Tips for Buying EarthBound

May 15th, 2014 | EarthBound, Uncommon Knowledge

Supergamerk sent in this EarthBound trick a little while back:

Hello, Tomato! So, you know how people will claim: “There is NO way to lose the Starman Jr. battle. None.” Well, I’ve made that statement false that now. Simply, just grind Ness to level twelve before getting Buzz Buzz, and use the Shield move he gets at that level in the Starman Jr. battle, and it will cancel out Buzz Buzz’s shield and you can get hit by Starman Jr’s PSI moves! Here’s a video of it in action:

This is really cool! I was aware of how to skip Starman Junior altogether, but this is all-new news to me! It’s neat how this intro part of the game has so many little neat tricks to it if you’re creative enough 😀

You seriously didn’t know about this? Everyone does, it’s just that nobody feels like grinding that much with so little exp.

That’s really cool. But what happens afterwards? It seemed, after his game over, he was trying to trigger the fight again, but Starman Jr. wasn’t showing. Is he gone for good? Is the game broken without that event flag? Or can you return Porky and Picky home to continue the story without ever having to beat Starman Jr.?

I’m pretty sure you can continue the game as normal after that. It seems pretty similar to when you do the “skip Starman Junior” trick in that regard.

@Gaffer Tape: Yeah, Tomato’s right. After I died to Starman Jr. the game continued normally after that. Also, yes, when you die to Starman Jr. he will never come back.

Wow that’s crazy. I love imagining what actually happened.

“I’ll cast a PSI Shield!”
“I’ll cast a shield too!”

Wait, I thought this was a thing I read on EarthBound Central a while ago? Maybe it was somewhere else. I remember doing this though. There’s also the thing where you can play the entire game with no Sound Stone if you have your inventory full of cookies when Buzz-Buzz would give it to you. He gives it to Tracy and then you just have to never speak to her in person. There are lots of neat tricks like that.

When I first read this e-mail I had the same thought, but I don’t think I covered this trick before (although it’s possible, I’ve done almost 2000 posts now). You might be thinking of the “avoid Starman Junior” trick which I also linked to in the post.

What you should try doing is when it asks if you want to continue say “No” until it takes you back to the title screen. Buzz buzz might make a guest appearance in the intro montage, or so I’ve heard.

I did this by accident a long time ago. =p
Never thought of it as a trick. Funny how that works.

BS, that is BS.

I think I prefer to do it the normal, intended way XD Too much work this is.

I lost to this fellow in one of the randomized hacks from the PSI Randomizer. The jerk poisoned me, and even the fact that Picky could use the “Crash Boom Bang” attack didn’t save me. I just spawned back at my house though and was A-OK. The game continued as normal.

@EBisumaru: BS… BSI Shield Alpha…

*Runs away*

Starman Jr:So ,uh…did I kill him?
Ness:Hey Starman! You can bite my shiny daffodil ***!
*Ness and friends dashed away laughing*
Starman Jr:…F***
