Adam sent me an e-mail over the weekend about EarthBound and GameStop stores:
Hi!
I’ve been following the Earthbound Bash, and it was quite a story. What an inspiration!
Anyhow, today I was in a Gamestop in Houston, Texas when my wife pointed out that they were selling Earthbound VC downloads (in addition to other classic titles). I snapped a few pictures for you.
I’m not really sure this qualifies as news, but I haven’t seen it mentioned on Earthbound Central. Really I was just kind of nostalgic about seeing Earthbound in a physical store again. 😀
So I guess you can pay for Virtual Console downloads from GameStop stores – I guess it would be a cool way to gift VC games to people or something, actually. Anyway, it looks like empty game boxes have been fitted with info about various Virtual Console games, and here’s what they got for EarthBound!
Seriously, I can’t believe that EarthBound ANYTHING is in a GameStop store 😯 I dunno about you, but this has been feeling way more like the Year of EarthBound than the Year of Luigi!
Also, mega collectors, this box info thing might your chance to add something new to your collection! It almost feels like the next generation of those EarthBound in-store display cards 😛

I don’t think you get a box. You just get a download code on your receipt.

Yeah, you don’t get a box, it’s just there for display purposes.
Reggie said the Year of Luigi would somehow continue into 2014. Maybe (!), he feels guilty about the whole Mother 3 not in America fiasco so he secretly asked Iwata to rerelease EarthBound to make up for it.

Anonymous: The winning bid was somewhere over $5000. Since all bids accumulated, it brought in over $14,000 total.
@NinjaCheese:
We don’t have GameStop in the UK. It’s online only retailer for us.
If anything, GAME in the UK will have these, but I doubt it since I’ve only seen eShop games and not VC games.
Infact, our versions of eShop codes are little cards you get with the codes that needs scratched out I believe.
@Gradon
I don’t think you can even get those little cards for Wii U eShop games.
Wow this is pretty cool!!!! The last time I seen earthbound anything in a new retail store was when I was 5. Oh the good ol days:(
EarthBound is back in stores!? I never thought i would see the day…

I’m really digging the cool description they wrote for the box. I think that Happy Happy Village is an unusual choice for a box screenshot, but… hey! At least EarthBound is being sold in physical stores now!

It has always to be in the US. Yes, we do have GameStops in Spain, but… I don’t think they have anything like this here. :/
(We all know the Year of Luigi is way more relevant, duh.)
I see, but Gamestop has been irrelevant for years upon years. I understand about the article though.
I think I might just call up my local Gamestop and ask if they’ve got these boxes. If they do, I’ll sweet talk the manager into giving/selling me one. Then I’ll run 6 miles for a box.
Bought that box? The manager said he would get fired if he sold the box…
Also they have to use them for ATLEAST another seven months… Then Nintendo pays them to advertise it more. So we’ll have to wait until Nintendo stops paying them + seven months to get our greasy little hands on these.
Too bad I have never seen a GameStop store in the UK.
