Tips for Buying EarthBound

November 1st, 2013 | EarthBound

A fan named Baptiste recently sent me a long e-mail which explains things better than I could, so I’ll just paste it right here:

Greetings, Mr. Mandelin (or Mr.Tomato, I don’t know what is the more polite)!

My name is Baptiste Faussat, and I am a french fan of the Mother series.

I contact you because I think you could talk on your site about an interesting event implicating the Mother series that just happened in France.

You know, we were unlucky with the Mother series: We never had any official French translation of the games, and we dropped all our fan translation projects (save for one EB Zero fan translation, which was quite crude, sadly).

However, there is still a strong French Mother community, and it is why I am contacting you.

There a very well-known french site called jeuxvideo.com (videogames.com in English) that just published a “folder” about the Mother series. It is short, it doesn’t even talk about Starmen.net or the fan Mother 4, but it was published after hundreds of french fans (including me) asked them.

Actually, the site has a “idea box” where you can submit ideas such as “Why not creating a folder about the GTA series?”, then people can vote daily for electing the best idea. Recently, some Mother french fans have submitted a similar idea about the Mother series, and it won last month with up to 20000 votes!

The folder about the Mother series (link) was released today, so I thought your could talk about it on your EB Central site, because we want American and Japanese Mother fans to know that they are not alone.

By the way, I am currently translating Mother 1+2 using your tools, so I could send you some screenshots later, if you want to talk about this too. I hope you will soon release the Mother 3 tools, so we could translate it into french.

This is really cool, thanks for sharing it! It’s great to see that fans in other countries are just as united too!

I’d like too to have the translation tools for Mother 3. I’d like to make my brother discover this fantastic game!

Baptists, if you need any help for translating, it’d be a pleasure to help you giving some life to a crazy yet wonderful idea like this! 😉

That’s pretty awesome! Sharing all that just because they love the game. Good luck to you guys!

MOTHER 3 wasn’t translated into french? Woah, I was sure it was…

I should add this to the box of ‘things french people do way better than spanish people’. Seriously I don’t like this place (I refer to spain)… o~o

Shame you guys never got any official releases! With EB’s crazy programming, it’ll likely be a huge pain getting that one in French. But if we could do it with Mother 3, I’m sure you guys could do it for Mother 2! Maybe it would be easier to use the English version as a base? It would likely save you a lot of hacking work…

Sadly, we can’t translate EarthBound in french so easily. French uses letters that don’t exist in English, and that are not included in the EarthBound fonts. We would have to entirely reprogram the whole text system in the game.

I would like to see Polish translation of the MOTHER series, but there will be the same problem. Few Polish letters does not exist in English, in this case – ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż.

Hey Mato, not sure to be asking this but, do you plan on downloading Mother 4 when it releases? The fan game.

Mother series in ALL the languages!

Earthbound’s quirky humor doesn’t translate very easily, and certainly not literally.

I’m thinking of the “XXXterday” riddle in particular; how would that translate into French? Is there any word in French that starts with “Oui…” but has nothing to do with the word that means “yes”? And is there any French song, TV show, or other pop-culture thing that has such a word in the title?

Yes, it’s realased today!! It’s a great victory for us, the french Mother fans…Oh and, you know, I was one of the guys who voted, and I was really involved on the project! I maked topics about the idea on Starmen.net and Earthbound central (You can find them respectibely on “Starmen.net Discussion.” and “General”.), so that we could obtain your votes! Now, it’s time to bump them to announce that the idea is realased, but than you again to all your support, pepole of EC and Starmen!

Wasn’t there a French translation of Mother 3 that was never finished? Perhaps they can contact that team and ask for their unfinished work, rather than starting from scratch.

Mato said on Nov. 3, 2013

Earthboundians Unite: Sure, I probably will when it comes out.

gbev: There’ve been a few French teams but they’ve all fizzled out and/or lost contact. One just started a few months ago and already they’re out of contact 🙁

@Mato: that’s quite bad news. How usable are your translations tools? How much changes did you do to the game data structures? In the data crystal site it seems to have 3 version of the game structure alongside your translation versions.

If *we* take the 1.1 version. How does the text is stored? I understood that text stocked with a pointer list for each string, and is stored more or less everywhere. Searching at the offsets given by data crystal proves that you moved the text position, because it’s not really at the right place.

For the translation we HEAVILY modified everything, so there’s a lot of differences between the translation and the original game.
