Tips for Buying EarthBound

July 22nd, 2013 | EarthBound

It sounds like EarthBound is selling well on the Wii U Virtual Console! Exact numbers aren’t given so it’s hard to say anything for sure, but it’s ranked #2 for “recent best sellers”, only being beaten by Donkey Kong:

I’m guessing the fact that Donkey Kong costs 30 cents compared to EarthBound’s $10 price tag has a lot to do with it being #1 😛

It also sounds like the EarthBound Miiverse has a lot of followers! I don’t have my Wii U hooked up to check it out, but hopefully some folks here can provide numbers and info.

In all, it sounds like EarthBound’s doing well on the Wii U Virtual Console!

Very good! When I get my Wii U system, Smash Bros and EarthBound will be the frequently played systems.

You can get a list of it on the web. Currently the Earthbound community has 13.5k followers. Pretty rad.

Can I just take this moment to laugh hysterically at everyone who thought EB was never coming back? AHHAHAHAHAHA. Ok, thanks.

Awesome! Really glad that its doing so well 🙂
When I get a Wii U again, you can bet that this will be the first thing I buy!

As of 7/22/2013, 13,476 users have participated in the EarthBound community on Miiverse. Pretty cool considering that for weeks, most VC games have been below 10,000.

I could provide pictures from the web/desktop Miiverse meanwhile.

Miiverse has practically exploded with newcomers to the game, I’ve taken it upon myself to answer as many questions about the game as I can without spoiling it for them 🙂 The attention the game is getting right now is more than I could have ever hoped for.

Donkey Kong may have more sales, but the EarthBound Miiverse community has over 3 times the amount of posts.

EarthBound is number ONE in the European charts!

The Great Morgil said on Jul. 22, 2013

Normally, i don’t use Miiverse that often, but i’ve been posting a lot for EB and checking out other posts since it came out. I’m actually seeing a surprisingly large amount of posts that appear to be from people who’ve never played or never even heard of the game before praising it for how great it is or asking for help with some tricky parts. It really tells me that game must be doing great and selling to so many people besides the diehard fans. I guess Nintendo’s heavy advertising of it actually worked for once.

The Great Morgil said on Jul. 22, 2013

Also, i know Mato doesn’t have a US Wii U, but is there a way to get an English Miiverse video montage like he did when the Jp version came out?

Earthbound is #1 on the eShop in Europe (or the UK at least)

Stuffgamer1 said on Jul. 22, 2013

@Lakitwo: That’s probably due in part to people like me who bought Donkey Kong in support of low prices but have no intention whatsoever to really PLAY it, let along talk about it. 😛

@The Great Morgil: Of course! All Wii U’s have access to all regions’ Miiverses…which now that I think about it is pretty strange given Nintendo’s clinging to region locking. I routinely look up the Japanese Miiverse to see what great games they’re getting that we still have to wait forever for…just a glutton for pain that way, I guess. Japan has Squenix Wii U VC support already!

I had such an easy time with Frank (and I am glad there are so many newcomers):

Level 6
It took 3 turns to kill him.
Turn 1: Normal attack = normal damage
Turn 2: SMAAAAAAAAAASH attack = 59 damage
Turn 3: Normal attack finishes him off.

Yeah! It was a good idea to bring Earthbound back! YAAAAY!!! Take that Nintendo!

In all seriousness, I’m really happy that Earthbound is doing so well. Maybe This will be their cue to bring Mother 3 overseas… Please?

I don’t have a Wii U (yet) so I can’t play sadly.

There’s a pretty interesting discussion going on on Kotaku.com right now. Here’s a link: http://kotaku.com/playing-earthbound-for-the-first-time-tell-us-what-you-872335013

It’s pretty interesting to read what people think of the game. Of course, there are some who just “don’t get it” or just aren’t fans of what EB has to offer, but the vast majority seems to really accept this game.

At the same time, it can be painful to read about people buying the slingshots…

FlyingManCourage said on Jul. 22, 2013

I haven’t bought a Wii U, yet. When I do, Earthbound is going to be the first thing I buy.

I would also like to take this time to wildly speculate about the future of the series. My predictions:

1. Earthbound will continue to sell VERY well. 2. Sales numbers from Earthbound will force Nintendo to consider releasing the other titles in the series. 3. Nintendo will decide to release at least ONE of the other two games. 4. FMC’s head will explode from joy-overload.

misterdigi35 said on Jul. 23, 2013

This game is “The Shawshank Redemption” of video games. When it was first released it wasn’t given quite as much attention, but has grown in popularity and notoriety over the years. The games that were released near and around its time, like Chrono Trigger and FF VI, while great games, overshadowed this game. I’m so glad to see it getting firm and absolutely well deserved attention. This game NEEDS to be played.

So I’m replaying the game right now…

Ah nostalgia… Buzz Buzz’s Prophecy (the song that plays when Buzz Buzz talks to you), Pollyana (the song that plays at Ness’ house) and Good Morning (the song that plays when you wake up at a hotel)…

I haven’t even reached Twoson and yet I feel as if I am going to die out of pure nostalgia…

This game has truly stood the test of time.

And now a new generation of gamers are about to play it…

Donkey Kong is #1 and Yoshi is #3. What the heck is wrong with us?

domflo said on Jul. 23, 2013

Both are (or have been) 30 cents on the eShop, so it’s not surprising that they are #1 and #3. I, too, bought every 30 cent title.

AdmiralCrunch said on Jul. 23, 2013

Yeah, there were 7 games offered for 30 cents each which are likely to dominate the top slots for a long time. Some of them DESERVED those spots (FZero and Super Metroid for example) but either way, that’s throwing the numbers. That said, consider that Nintendo is mostly concerned with the revenue that a game generates, more than how many copies sold. At $10 per sale, EarthBound is netting them some serious dough right now. I realy hope we see some hard sales numbers at some point.

Also, working through Pyramid now. Some of these areas are a lot harder than I remembered! I also did the Trex’s Bat Challenge for the first time! I don’t think I’d do it again, but I can now add it to my list of EB experiences. Yay!

As of right now it is 11th for best selling eShop game. I would say that is pretty good. By the way this is for the US market.

Beebo said on Jul. 23, 2013

Where can you see the ranking on the sales charts? I’ve been searching for that and haven’t had any luck.

Some Canadian Fellow said on Jul. 23, 2013

Earthbound is selling quite well in Canada too. The ratings say 57 people rated it, all but 4 rated the game 4/5 rather than the typical 5/5. Although Canada and Americia’s gaming communities differ in size. 57 is a lot, compared to DK’s tiny number 4. And Canada didn’t get Earthbound. I was one of the lucky Canadians who bought it in USA when it was selling in store.
Right now the status stands like this in Canada.
1. DK (Probaby because it’s 30 cents.) Ratings: 4
Ratings: 57
3.Super Mario World
Rating: 205ish?

I’ll say it now, Earthbound is doing excellent here considering how many people play video games and own a Wii U. (Everyone has a Wii still, except a lucky few.)

Man, when I get the Prepaid Wii U Card the first thing I’m getting is Earthbound, by FAR.

Paul said on Jul. 23, 2013

I hate to be the one to bring up “rose-tinted glasses,” but I do think that Earthbound’s performance in Europe (and Canada, if Some Canadian Fellow is correct) will be a better indicator of its quality than its performance in the U.S. and Japan, since Europeans and Canadians are less likely to be… biased… by nostalgia.

Anonymouse said on Jul. 23, 2013

I for one am Canadian but lack the money and ability to get a Wii U… T_T But if I could buy I, I’d be one of those people with EB on my Wii U Virtual Console. But MEH at least I have the good ol’ fashioned cartridge and SNES to experience it on. Just wish I could show my support as a fellow MOTHER fan.

Someone Else said on Jul. 23, 2013

@Some Canadian Fellow
I think it’s only possible to give an eShop rating if you’ve played for an hour or more. This is why Donkey Kong would have such a small amount of ratngs – I don’t think many people will have played Donkey Kong for over an hour, since it can definitely be beaten in less.

Refat17 said on Jul. 23, 2013

I’m happy for earthbound, a really great game! Now just put chrono trigger and you have 2 of the best rpgs and they would compliment each other well as both games are very different other then being rpgs. If I had a wii u, I would buy earthbound because I just feel bad for playing a game that clearly deserves support, I don’t think anything will beat earthbound as my favorite game (unless they make another mother game (: ).

Ness said on Jul. 24, 2013

We need to get EB to #1!!! If we want Mother 3 virtual console, EB needs to make more money, Nintendo won’t be happy with 2

Sat said on Jul. 24, 2013

What? Canada didn’t get EarthBound? I rented it so often at the video game club that my father finally bought it (and complained it was very expensive), making it the only game with Mario All-Star and Yoshi’s Safari that I owned back then instead of renting. And it all happened in Quebec!

Anyway I still have my SNES and don’t have a WiiU, but I’m pretty happy of what’s happening.

Some Canadian Fellow said on Jul. 24, 2013

Very true. Tons of Canadians never got ahold of this. In fact when I’d ask someone about Earthbound they’d be like: ‘What’s Earthbound?’ or the reaction that always annoys me ‘The game where Ness from Brawl is from?’. The only thing people know about Earthbound is Ness…

@Someone Else
That makes sense. Ha, to be honest that’s good. Some people like me may just give it a 5/5 rating before playing.

True, I have a feeling DK was bought by people for the sake of buying it for 30 cents. I doubt many played it long.

DK has been out for a while, and is for 30 cents. Earthbound is working it’s way up there, and soon it’ll be #1. I would love an English Mother 3, since I hate emulation. I have the Japanese cart thingie ma bob, complete the with a Mother 3 GBA, but as I said, NO ENGLISH. If this does well, Mother 3 has a chance since Nintendo is translating some Japan only games for the 3DS virtual console if I’m right.

Whoa. I guess my information was wrong. The thing is, I heard of it from someone else that Earthbound didn’t make it here because of the Player’s Guide that needed to be in French as well as English if it was to be in Canada. Perhaps that person was maybe wrong. I can’t say I saw it in Canada ANY place, including at a Night Market that has pretty much anything, from mops to video games. However the place were I live only has well known games. Not games like Okami or Earthbound back then. I’ve seen other SNES RPGS like Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG, but it’s always like a hundred bucks…
Ha, my mom bought it for me as well as a bunch of other SNES games while we were in the USA. She gave it to my brother and I since we didn’t complain on the fact the trip was a month long and she thought it was unfair.

You know, be glad you don’t have a Wii U. Other wise you might be like me not wanting to look at it thanks to Earthbound and the fact I have no money currently. It hurts to look at it…
Earthbound got another 5 star rating. 58 ratings so far.

I’d really like to know how well MOTHER 2 is doing on the Wii U in Japan, in comparison.

Beebo said on Jul. 24, 2013

Japan got Earthbound at the discount price when we got Punchout in America.

That’s actually the first time I ever read or heard anything about Earthbound… I was pumped to try to win Punchout again (or at least get past Soda Poploski) while all these other people where rending their clothes in torment that Japan got Earthbound (Mother 2) for 30 cents (or whatever their anniversary price was).

So… theirs will be high just as Balloon fight, Punchout, or even Yoshi were high in the US.

Eunacis (Seth Campbell) said on Jul. 24, 2013

Hoping that this will drive NoA to release MOTHER ! & 3, and maybe even convince Mr. Itoi to consider a MOTHER 4.

random dude said on Jul. 25, 2013

skeaking of earthbound… super smash bros has no ness or lucas so far 🙁 could this be the end?:'(

random dude said on Jul. 25, 2013

Lakitwo said on Jul. 25, 2013

@random dude
They haven’t ever dropped a character from the original Smash Bros. on the N64, so I’d say Ness is safe. Also, with how well the EarthBound re-release is being received, I doubt that they’d take out the EB characters when it’s as popular as it’s ever been in the US.

Anonymous said on Jul. 26, 2013

Ness is guaranteed maybe he’ll be a hidden challenger again though. I would like to see 1 more earthbound character, either Ninten or Porky

Anonymouse said on Jul. 26, 2013

IMO Ness will stay but I have some doubts about there another MOTHER character. If one does pop up though, I’d want it to be Jeff/ Lloyd or Duster so that we don’t get a “clone”. T_T Lucas is great and all, introduced me to MOTHER 3 he did, but they made their move sets so similar… it’s like they were really lazy.

Fjord said on Jul. 29, 2013

I would say if another Mother/Earthbound character would be added it would be porky- He connects the fate of both Lucas and Ness. But really earthbound is already heavily represented as a series (Which we should be thankful for.) Also stating they got ‘lazy’ with clones is very untrue. The clones play very differently so they put more effort than most do as well as people don’t understand adding one character isn’t like adding (I think sakurai stated it was more like multiplication) and it was done for time constraints. In Melee the six clones were given to us instead of king dedede. So back with Melee’s roster size 6 clones = 1 original character. So with Brawl’s roster I am sure it was more like 4 or 5 clones is equivlant to a character sporting an original moveset.

Pengo said on Jul. 29, 2013

Pengo said on Jul. 29, 2013

Ness is for sure going to be in the next smash, before I went to the Brawl site and checked Ness’ profile every time I went there and I read that Ness is a vetran fighter according to it…so my guess is that Sakurai and the team are possibly making some other character at the time, making a diffrent Earthbound area (Onett…will be replaced???), or planning making Ness with NEW MOVES…my guess…

GrapeEscape said on Aug. 1, 2013

Good news, everyone! EarthBound has finally reached the rank of 1st place in recent best sellers! (It ranks 10th in best sellers overall). Overthrowing Donkey Kong was no easy task, as it’s held the top spot ever since its induction into the Virtual Console. This bodes every well for the series as a whole, with how well its been selling and the massive amount of advertising Nintendo is giving it. Honestly, I didn’t even purchase Donkey Kong in order to help EarthBound achieve that shining 1st place!

BusterTheFox said on Aug. 6, 2013

I never bought DK, either. It just doesn’t interest me. Even if it is only 30 cents, I know I’m never going to play it. Haha. EB, on the other hand, was a day one purchase. I even added extra money to my account that I couldn’t really afford to spend so that I could buy it… I think I’ve said this before? Oh, well. There it is.

As for Smash, they have yet to remove any characters that were in the original game. Ness is staying, I’m 100% certain. No, I don’t have proof, so don’t ask. :p I just hope Lucas returns because he’s my main in Brawl… I’d hate to have to learn to play another character as well as I play him. 🙂

Anonymous said on Aug. 11, 2013

If I can recall correctly, EarthBound’s really, really high up in the overall ratings in the US. All those five-star ratings… I don’t know the exact numbers, but it’s up there.

…Really, really high up there.

@BusterTheFox Same here! Even though Lucas is like a clone of Ness, it can be quite difficult for me to play as Ness, seeing as though there are slight, slight differences in their movesets, like Lucas’ smash attacks…

Anon said on Aug. 14, 2013

I bloody hope so, EB is awesome!
