Hi Tomato,
So I picked up today’s copy of the Boston Herald, and I was reading through it as normal, when I stumbled upon the Earthbound review by surprise, and I just knew I had to share it with Earthbound Central!
It’s been like 18 years since EarthBound got in any print newspapers!
Actually, here’s a look at one old article from 1995. It’s funny how the old article doesn’t reflect EarthBound’s new ESRB rating 😛

“Rated E for everyone.”
Right off the bat they start with a mistake. Lovely.

Oops I updated the pic.
Once upon a time Earthbound was that game that stinks… Now it’s apparently Spacebound! WHOOT! (Oh and hello there, Anonymoose. =D)
“Struggling” console? Well, it has had a slow start, but it is really picking up, especially in Japan. It may not be compared to the sales of Nintendo’s past consoles, but at least it has already passed the cringe-worthy sales of the PS Vita 😀 With EarthBound, and Wind Waker HD, Wii U is definitely going to have a good time at the end of this year.
Funny and also very good how this game is getting reviewer attention. IGN just gave it a rating like four days ago. I won’t spoil it, but this rocks.
“Earthbound” feels like a “Final Fantasy” game based on a weird Japanese version of the “Simpsons” LMAO.
EarthBound fans are in critical positions of power; the day predicted by the Apple of Enlightenment is close.
Final Fantasy was DEFINITELY the wrong franchise to mention. I’d agree with the statement if he’d said “Dragon Quest” instead, since the mechanics are MUCH closer to that. 😛
@Lucky8
You just reminded me why I didn’t get a Vita: no games. Except maybe Persona 4.
As for the Wii U… I doubt it will surprass the sales of the PS4 and the Xbox One, but it is possible for it to make a ‘significant’ amount of sales. Right now the only thing saving Nintendo is the 3DS with great games like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon and of course the upcoming Pokemon and Ace Attorney games!
A few awkward gaffes aside, this is seriously awesome. A positive review for an 18 year old, niche SNES game in a major newspaper, wow. A year ago, who would have thought EB would finally be released on VC, be a top selling title on the eShop AND even get a small slice of mainstream media coverage? This is truly a great time to be a Mother/Earthbound fan.
@corey. That’s the best comment i’ve read all year.
This is stupidly amazing. I cannot believe a virtual console re-release got a review (even if it is one of the best games ever) by an actual newspaper. Also, what’s a newspaper?
@Vukadin, I think it’s safe to say it’ll beat the Xbox One, after betraying its fan base and having its main focus being enhanced TV, and the cherry on top is the $500 price tag. As for this, well, a little publicity never hurt. Well, as long as you aren’t Lohan.
Back around the time when Earthbound was first released, I remember an article in “Kids Today”(sort of a kids’ news page attached to the Sunday comics) about what new games were coming out for the summer, Earthbound being one of them. I recall there being an image of the clay Mach Pizza guy, but not much else. Don’t know whether the Kids Today section was very widespread or not, but it at least gave the game a little bit of publicity in 1995. A very, very little bit.
Funny how they used a map of Onett as the picture instead of an actual screenshot. 😛
Wow, Earthbound is everywhere now. This is a happy moment. 😀

And they’re still not playing past the first town. Must be some of kind of reviewer tradition.
Is there a way to view the article online? the pic is way too small to read and enlarging it blurres:(
