A fan by the name of broomweed has started on a hack of MOTHER 1+2 to make MOTHER 1 very Mr. Saturn-like, as inspired by comments years ago on EB Central! Here’s a description of the project:
Hey, you! Do any of the following apply to you:
- Haven’t played Mother 1 because of the lack of Mr. Saturns in it
- Always wondered what the Mr. Saturns would be like in Mother 1
- Love trying to decipher what the Mr. Saturns are trying to say
If you answered “yes” to any of the above, then, um, that’s pretty weird. But your prayers have been answered! SaturnBound Zero is a text/cosmetic hack that adds ONE HUNDRED PERCENT more Mr. Saturns to MOTHER 1+2!
And here are the features:
- A surprisingly handsome recreation of the Mr. Saturns and their font in 16×16 and 8×8, respectively
- Changes human NPCs are into Mr. Saturns, with various features to differentiate them (sometimes)
- Changes dialogue (so far, in only Mother’s Day and some of Magicant) into a Mr. Saturn-sounding style.
- Accounts for weird shifting of the bottom half in some — but not all — NPC sprites, so they don’t look weird and off-kilter
- Accounts for up-and-down motion in player sprites (this is why their feet look so weird, sorry)
- Changes a couple of item names and descriptions
- Changes some of the battle text
- Changes the ATM to look like the Mr. Saturn ATM (kind of)
- Changes PSI into “science” (because, you know, the Mr. Saturns are good at that…)
There’s still a good amount of work that needs to be done, but you can check out the current version and keep up with progress here!

This is a really cute idea!
Heh. I was just working on modifying the EarthBound Zero ROM (by replacing Big Foot with one of the FF1 dragons, and modding its AI). On the other hand, I really like this idea, because it captures the Mr. Saturn spirit, if you will.

I can’t imagine I’d ever get tired of battles starting with “AAH! Enemy name!”
Speaking of hacks and hacking tools, when are we going to get the hacking tools for Mother 3 like we got for Mother 1+2? I believe you announced them sometime ago.
Awesome!!! Mr saturn is a great addition to mother 1! Keep up the work I’m looking forward to playing it
@EarthboundCakes I think he’s postponing anything like that in response to Earthbound’s VC release because he doesn’t want to make it look like despite it getting released we are still hacking like nothing happened.

When I posted my Mother 3 offer a few weeks back it somehow actually finally turned into big news, so I want to hold off for a bit with a new patch/the tools. I haven’t thought about how long I’ll wait but I still plan to release the stuff at some point.

I think it’s 1+2 only, as it uses my translation tools to insert the text.

Holy crap yes
Dreams become true
Ugh…why Mother 1+2? The graphics are squashed, the sound degraded…I can’t stand the “fuzzy” sound of the Game Boy Advance.
Because it’s still the superior version of the game, and now, the sound could be restored with a patch.
@NESter, EarthBound Zero would take a really long time to hack, and BBHack is only in its initial stages. But Mato did release his hacking tools for Mother 1+2, though, so this is where we are.
What I’d really like to see is a modification or two to the game engine, prototype or not. Stretch out the top box in battle a bit, buy all of your PSI spells, support six enemies instead of four, just get to the command box when a battle starts… There’s so many things that can be adjusted in EarthBound Zero.
Wow, thanks everyone for this support!
@NESter, yes, it has terrible music (although I like its text display better), but Opinionated Vector Chimera has it right — BBHack isn’t really advanced enough to do stuff like this yet, I don’t think. I’m just using the Mother 1+2 tools because they can do more stuff right now.
