Tips for Buying EarthBound

March 20th, 2013 | EarthBound

Whew, after like what, 15 hours, the video stream we were doing of MOTHER 2 on the Japanese Wii U Virtual Console is done. We didn’t finish the game, sadly, but if there’s enough demand (which I think there was, given people’s reactions at the end) then I’ll see if I can get Reid, Jack, and Jenna over again in the near future to finish off the game. Everyone else is gonna be leaving for PAX East starting tomorrow, sadly 🙁

Anyway, if you weren’t there for the stream, it was a ton of fun and the very first time I’ve ever done a stream or done anything live online, so it was a real learning experience. Some awesome stuff happened too, too much to remember it all, but a few included:

  • We had like up to 250+ viewers at one point – which isn’t TOO much but when I stop to think that this was for a nearly 20-year old game bought on a Japanese system, that’s pretty crazy 😯
  • Itoi watched the stream for a little bit and even posted about it on Twitter!
  • Another important MOTHER 2 staffer watched and tweeted about us!
  • Both Itoi and this other guy are going to be doing a live stream of their own in a few days for about 3 hours. I wonder if they’ll talk about us!
  • I died a million times! I’m sorry! I seriously never suck at this game, it’s stage fright I tell ya! In fact, we all seemed to suck at the game for whatever reason while playing for an audience…
  • Everyone who played got plagued by the “inventory is full can’t proceed with the story wtf why can’t I get stuff to happen” problem.
  • Marcus Lindblom, one of the head guys behind EarthBound’s localization, hung out in the chat for a long time answering lots of cool questions and chatting with us. He says Giygas is pronounced “Geegus”… YES AHA Chewy and I aren’t crazy people after all
  • Jeff (of EarthBound Saga fame, among many other awesome things) announced he’s working on a documentary about the EarthBound community. Well, pre-announced really. The real announcement will come later and you can be sure I’ll post about it on EB Central later. It’s already sounding super-cool, though!
  • Reid shared pictures and videos of his baby!
  • My garb changed throughout the stream… I wanted to see if anyone would notice, and somehow everyone did. You guys are too observant!
  • Most of the Fangamer office relocated to my living room, where they worked most of the day. If you order any necklaces and other stuff in the near future, they were most likely packaged here, during this event. You may accidentally get some of my carpet fibers, sorry!
  • We had a drawing contest, but the sheer badness of my art prompted people to request more art from me. It’s pretty bad, but I had a lot of fun with it. I don’t have scans of them handy, but maybe that’s for the best!
  • Chewy drove several hours on a whim to attend the event halfway through! By this point it was like the thing was an EarthBound All-Stars event, oh man! She talked about all sorts of things, including things from the MOTHER 2 novel, a little about Itoi, and more. We were hoping Itoi would catch the stream with her playing and be like “WTF it’s her!” but I dunno if that happened.
  • I tried to eat pizza with one hand and play the game with the other, but quickly found out that the Wii U pad doesn’t make that easily possible since the Select button is on the wrong side 🙁
  • We looked at how much better the EarthBound guide was compared to the official MOTHER 2 guide.
  • Also, we looked closer at the MOTHER 2 guide and realized that the pizza delivery guy has a name (Gonzares) and that Pokey was listed with the English spelling of “Porky” way back when the game was released! Also, we might’ve found a clay model pic we never saw before, of the Mr. Saturn ATM. Crazy!

There was a lot more, but it’s getting late and I can’t remember it all. It was pretty spur-of-the-moment so it might be hard to recapture the magic again, but who knows, maybe we’ll be able to pick up where we left off and finish the game for everyone in the near future.

For the record, we found no noticeable changes between this version and the original Super Famicom version. No changes at all so far. What this means is a question for another day (possibly tomorrow!) so get your thinking caps ready!

Thanks again to everyone who came by and chatted and watched and had fun with us! It really did feel like there were 200 people there in the living room with us~

This will definitely be a day to remember 😀
I was only able to watch bits and pieces of the stream due to me being at work for most of the day, but it certainly looked like you guys had fun! Can’t wait to see the rest of the stream!

DelectaBit said on Mar. 20, 2013

You forgot to mention how Reggie was oh-so-obviously interfering with the stream around the beginning! REGGIEEE! *shakes fist*

Pichu said on Mar. 20, 2013

Thank you Mato for hosting the stream and for generally being awesome. Your dedication makes me proud to be part of the fandom.

Acedio said on Mar. 20, 2013

I caught the very beginning of the stream this morning but had to run to work. Had I known it was still running I would have turned it on when I got home! You guys are awesome 🙂

Halloween said on Mar. 20, 2013

Hahaha that’s awesome! I missed Marcus Lindbloom and Chewy but you all are super for doing this! I might watch the rest later for the highlights.

LucasTizma said on Mar. 20, 2013

I miss a week of EBC because of work, and now I want to jump off a bridge. ~(>_<~)

Reficul said on Mar. 20, 2013

Goddamn. 🙁

This stream sounded excellent.
And I missed the whole thing because of my university groupwork.

Ah, well, I guess one way to look at it is that I learned something: Put off groupwork when Mato is threatening to stream something. 🙂

TMMDI said on Mar. 20, 2013

had a lot of fun, hope you guys can finish the game for us sometime!

Anonymous said on Mar. 20, 2013

please please PLEASE stream the rest of the game!!!!!!

MKUltra said on Mar. 20, 2013

Thank you for the stream! Was a lot of fun to watch.

gBev said on Mar. 20, 2013

That was a lot more fun than I would have thought, especially with everything that happened. I think I spent a few hours too many watching it though. D:

BB Gang Zombie said on Mar. 20, 2013

I had a blast watching it and chatting with everyone, and having Mr. Lindblom answer my questions was an experience I will never forget. 🙂 Really nice guy.

Also had my name immortalized in the stream when I sarcastically asked for a shout-out, haha. You gotta be there for these things, I guess!

KingMike said on Mar. 20, 2013

I watched the entire stream, but I was kind of tired near the end (it was about 1:15 AM here when you quit).
So I was kind of tired, but did Dungeon Man’s sub change color or was I just seeing things?

skyrunner14 said on Mar. 20, 2013

I got on around 5:00 or so and stayed until 11:20. Had a lot of fun, really hoping you guys pick it up after PAX at some point! 😀

Pep said on Mar. 20, 2013

I missed the beginning of the stream, but ended up watching from around 2:45 PM-1:20 AM EST. I didn’t talk in the chat but I greatly enjoyed watching all of you onscreen. Thank you for doing this, it was incredibly entertaining!

HpBoost said on Mar. 20, 2013

Hope to see the conclusion!

Vukadin said on Mar. 20, 2013

So I heard that Mr. Itoi visited the stream.

Can anyone confirm this?

Unfortunately, I missed the stream.

GranTorino551 said on Mar. 20, 2013

Probably one of the best live streams I’ve watched in awhile.

Breeman said on Mar. 20, 2013

I popped in a few times during the first few hours of the stream, I was there when Itoi was watching!

I also had my pic of my copy of Earthbound shown at around 1:07 in this recording http://www.twitch.tv/fangamer/b/379681794 (I would have took a pic of myself holding the game or something, but I was at work and only had that picture of my SNES collection)

Mato said on Mar. 20, 2013

Vukadin: He indeed did catch a tiny portion of the stream when we just started. He also commented on how some of us were dressed as Ness and thanked us for saying we liked MOTHER 2 in Japanese.

KingMike: I wasn’t paying attention much during the Dungeon Man part (I think I was drawing?) so I can’t say. It might’ve just been the TV or something though.

Elobo said on Mar. 20, 2013

That was a fantastic stream guys, and I’m glad to have caught some really terrific moments. I’m still wearing a grin :).

Definitely pick it back up at some point!

Can’t help but wonder if Itoi saw that photo of my dog, ha ha.

Nessu said on Mar. 20, 2013

I heard he was on chat as well wishing Tomato good luck

Blue Toad said on Mar. 20, 2013

yes! I was the one who asked Marcus how to pronounce Giygas! Yesterday really was one of the greatest days in my life!

The Great Morgil said on Mar. 20, 2013

I had a blast watching this. I started in during the beginning, then left briefly for an hour at about 1 in the afternoon to make a quik trip to walmart. Then around 5 or 6 i took a quick nap followed by dinner, but i still had the stream running on my laptop so i could hear you guys as i slept. Then i continued watching until about 11PM, which i think was 9PM for you guys, at which point i got bored and popped in my freshly bought bluray of The Hobbit. But i still kept the stream going while i watched the movie, and just had it muted. I had no idea when the stream ended cuz of my screen saver, though.

The event was fun. I remember shouting out drawing suggestions, though i don’t think anybody heard my ideas. I also mentioned at one point losing a franklin badge to a house fire a year ago, and Reid said they could hook me up somehow. So later in the day i ordered a new badge and left a comment on the order about the fire and what Reid said, and hopefully they’ll do something then. They also said if you mention Mato’s name on an order, you could get one of those drawings, so i mentioned how i did the logo for his site and also am 3DS friends with him in hopes of getting one of those drawings :p.

I was there during the Marcus Q&A, and it was definitely fun. I think he answered one of my questions, about if they were aware of Mother 1’s attempted localization, and if anything from it influenced how some things were translated in Mother 2. Overall, though, the interview was a blast, and i remember someone saying they had a log of the whole thing which they will probably upload somewhere. I look forward to re-reading it when they do.

Holy crap, this is getting long. Anyway, the whole thing was a blast, and i’m just lucky i had off of work that day to experience most of it. Thanks, guys.

I want to see the Mr. Saturn ATM clay model 🙂

OneTallGamer said on Mar. 20, 2013

Being a once a month casual visitor to starmen.net/earthbound.net since I was a teenager (29 years old now, yikes!), and a more recent reader of this site… I never realized despite how obvious it is that fangamer.net was the work of the starmen.net people until I watched this stream yesterday.

1+1 just never added up in my head for some reason even after I put in an order two weeks ago after seeing a link in one of Tomato’s posts.

Will definitely be purchasing more stuff in the future! Not only good looking products, but good people as well.

gwalms said on Mar. 20, 2013

I missed Lindbom! When was he there? Btw.. why not start the rest of the game right NOW! :P.

Anyone else try to find the stream on the twitch.TV android ap? Doesn’t seem to come up there 🙁

Mr. Saturn said on Mar. 20, 2013

In my hopes and dreams Itoi visiting the stream prompts him to talk to Iwata about getting EarthBound released on the VC here (and in the PAL regions as well) and they go to Reggie and NOA and make them release it.

Mato said on Mar. 20, 2013

Here’s that Mr. Saturn ATM thing – none of us were quite sure if it was a clay model or not but the graininess of it makes it seem very possible. I don’t know if it shows up in this photo very well though:

TragicManner said on Mar. 20, 2013

It really felt like a major revival yesterday with everything that went on, even though it was only the re-release in Japan.

Dwiese1998 said on Mar. 20, 2013

Wow last night was freaking amazing! I even got a shout out from tomato! This was one of the first big events I’ve participated and I now appreciate our starmen community a lot more!

Dwiese1998 said on Mar. 20, 2013

I also enjoyed speaking with bb gang zombie 🙂

KingMike said on Mar. 20, 2013

Took me awhile to get (what I think is) the pizza reference. 😀

Mato said on Mar. 20, 2013

Yup! I even made a goofy topbar ad out of it some years back:

Stuffgamer1 said on Mar. 20, 2013

By my count, my screen name was mentioned in the video at least five times, including one of amazement at how long I spent watching the stream. I missed a few hours in the middle and stopped before the end, but still added up to around eight hours on the stream. Crazy, but fun. 😀

Anonymous said on Mar. 21, 2013

Gonzares? I think that’s supposed to be Gonzales

Anonymous said on Mar. 21, 2013

Also, could you link to Itoi’s/M2 staffer’s tweets?

Chris1212 said on Mar. 21, 2013

Wow! You are sooo lucky mato for playing the game even though it was Japanese. I heard that you guys played it in Tucson, which is where I live. I would have liked to known at least we’re you guys played it, but unfortunately I have school to worry about. Congrats on being able to play this limited time Earthbound Japanese VC game! 🙂

Chris1212 said on Mar. 21, 2013

Oh and even though I would know where you guys played it, I probably wouldn’t have come anyways 🙁

Mezmerize said on Mar. 21, 2013

Could you next time maybe record it and upload it on YouTube?
I’m living in Central Europe and had to work and tomorrow I have to worg again when Itoi plays 🙁

Mato said on Mar. 21, 2013

Well, it *should* be archived on the twitch.tv/fangamer hopefully. I don’t know how feasible it would be to copy 15+ hours of video from Twitch to YouTube.

Mato said on Mar. 21, 2013

Also, linking to conversations on Twitter is tough, but here are a few things:

(Todabu is the other staffer. He’ll be joining Itoi for Itoi’s stream tomorrow too.)

DelectaBit said on Mar. 21, 2013

It’s definitely archived on the Twitch account, I re-watched some parts of it already.

Also Mato. Although there were 250+ viewers at one point and a consistent 150-200 most of the stream, overall it was a lot more than it seems. There was a constant flow of people coming and going. I noticed that the overall views on the Fangamer Twitch were up by a couple THOUSAND before the night was over!

Mato said on Mar. 21, 2013

Haha, cool! I honestly know so little about streaming and stuff that I don’t know what stats are important and what aren’t. So I guess that sounds cool? I wish I could’ve seen how people reacted to my horrible playing though 😛

Also, I took some pics of some of my art:

2013-03-21 09.24.59 2013-03-21 09.26.24

First is my attempt at a Bulbasaur, the second is Reggie stabbing Nintendo Power.

The very very tentative plan right now is that we’ll pick up where we left off later today, but with Fangamer so undermanned right now with lots of new stuff suddenly launching (and a free shipping sale going on) that it might not happen as planned. We’ll see!

Esper said on Mar. 21, 2013

Jesus. That Bulba Saur.

Mato said on Mar. 21, 2013

So we all have too much going on today to resume the MOTHER 2 stream, so right now we’re guessing it’ll happen next week sometime. I’ll post more info when things get clearer.
