Seriously, I check multiple times a day on his Twitter AND his site, and the one hour I’m not looking he finally mentions it 😛

He posted about it yet again. Not entirely sure what his post translates to.

He said something like he wants to enjoy Mother himself again too, and mentions the Gumi village, Belch, Summers, Moonside, etc, seems like he’s really pumped about it all! 😀 He also replied to a twit in english, so cool.

Also, as I said before, whenever he mentions “MOTHER” he usually means “MOTHER series”, as you can see in these messages he wrote.

@Doppio: It’s not necessarily just for Mother 2. I still think the scope of this could cover all three games. He didn’t namedrop Mother 2 when mentioning scenes from Mother 2, he just referred to those parts when saying he wants to play Mother as well. He uses “Mother” in a sense that seems to refer to all three games.

Isn’t there a twitter program that lets you turn on alerts for keywords within a specific user? Seems like it should exist somewhere in the universe.

This pretty much confirms what I expected: it’s a re-release of the old games–or at least MOTHER 2. Maybe after talking to Chewy, Itoi finally decided to make the necessary legal changes (such as the Sky Runner song) that were holding up a Virtual Console release. Obviously, it would be even better if all three games were finally being released stateside, but I won’t hold my breath. That said, I don’t think Nintendo would go to the trouble of releasing all three games in America without turning it into some kind of compilation (especially since MOTHERs 1 and 3 never came here). However, considering the localization and translation challenges, as well as the fact that EarthBound was a financial flop, my bet is that an EarthBound (MOTHER 2) port to Virtual Console has the best chance of coming to America. But I hope I’m wrong, and we’ll finally get to play the entire series.

I think it’s got to be something else besides a fixed version of EarthBound to be able to release in America, otherwise he’d be more specific that this is a western-only thing. This has to be something new for Japan as well.

naja: I know I keep harping on the VC release thing–and I could be totally wrong about that–but as far as I know, the MOTHER series still hasn’t been released on VC in Japan either. I could be factually mistaken, but it’s possible that it’s simple as that.

I don’t think he’d be making such a big deal of everything if it were just a simple VC release. Though that’s just my two cents.

I agree. He wouldn’t make a big deal over something as little as the VC. Whatever he has planned, it’s gonna be big.

Itoi has said numerous times that he’s not making a Mother4. It’s gotta be a VC release.
Also… these guys are making a Mother 4 (http://mother4.andonuts.net/) which I think we will enjoy just as much.

I honestly don’t care if it’s a trilogy, or a remake of the series… I’m just so excited that a new Mother game will be released again! I hope it releases in North America this time 😀 !

I think people are underestimating how serious Itoi is when he says he doesn’t mind if someone else makes MOTHER 4.

I’m just not sure how Nintendo would treat it. Probably helps that Itoi and Iwata are BFFs though.

Since you’re so familiar with his stuff, maybe YOU could do Mother 4 😛 Plus Chewy looked kind of like an APE in Star Wars, right? IT’S DESTINED TO HAPPEN

@nintendofreak: He may be under contract to not disclose any specific details about this project until he gets a green-light to do so from Nintendo.

I think that’s actually it. That seemed to be the case when he announced Mother 3 stuff in late 2005 too.

It seems like there’s only three things this could turn out to be:

1. A Virtual Console release (MOTHER 1 and MOTHER 2 on Wii U VC and/or MOTHER 1+2 and MOTHER 3 on 3DS)
2. A compilation (probably MOTHER 1+2+3 for 3DS)
3. A remake (MOTHER 2, possibly 1 and 3 as well)

A rerelease needs to happen before Mother 4 is even considered by another developer, IMO. After Mother and Mother 3 having no official release in NA, it would be weird to have an official sequel with the only Mother release being Earthbound was in the SNES days. Frankly, a compilation of all three would be good enough for me.

I almost read Itoi’s response to m0ther3’s tweet wrong, but it’s awesome to hear that there is progress!

Where Itoi would love to face Belch, I want to prowl around the interiors of Sweet’s Little Factory once again. He wants to take in the Runaway 5, I want to see Live House, and the dance scene on Mt. Itoi.

So I really do hope this is a whole-series thing, and not just the one game.

I dunno, I always got the feeling that ever since Mother 3 for N64 was cancelled, he’s been ultra careful to reveal information, hence the weird last minute announcements

Yeah, there’s that too. His stance here is pretty much the exact same he took when he announced Mother 3 stuff back in 2005:

After some discussion with Nintendo, I’ve decided to make a slightly head-start announcement here on Hobonichi. I’ve worried people quite a bit this whole time, but I’m happy to report that Mother 3 for Game Boy Advance is nearing release.

I’ve thought to myself, “It should be all right now that it’s this far along,” on many occasions, but I always made sure not to announce anything until I could say that it was “ABSOLUTELY all right.” At any rate, this time I’ve decided to try and be reserved about everything. It looks like its release date will be about one season away, and I’m in the middle of doing many work retreats to get it finished. I’m going to work especially hard for a short while longer to get everything done.

By announcing this, I’m sure I’ll receive all sorts of questions, but I’m probably going to stay quiet about Mother 3 until just before its release. So it sounds like he needs to talk things through with Nintendo before making clear announcements, AND he’s wary of posting details until things are done. He’s said that in previous interviews before the GBA Mother 3 was released too.

So Tomato, by what he said there, whatever he’s working on should be pretty far along that he’s confident enough to talk about it at all right?

All the more reassuring if that’s the case. Although I’ll always hold out for hope that he’ll change his mind on Mother 4.

Call me Pollyanna, but I think it’s got to be more than just Virtual Console. My money’s on a 3DS remake of EarthBound. Correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t Itoi been having ambiguous meetings with Iwata and/or Miyamoto the past few years? Plenty of time to develop a remake.

Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but I think a lot of clues have been pointing to something more than VC and even a western release.

Whatever it is, if it comes here I’ll buy it, yet, holding my breath is useless. At least Mr.Mato is meticulously translating every word Itoi tweets.

Somebody needs to really tell Itoi that Western fans are making a fanmade version of MOTHER 4. I think he should be aware of this, don’t you think?

I really hope its Mother 3. It would feel right to finally play it on a Nintendo system.

I can tell you playing Mother 3, translated and on flash cart for the GBA was one of the most memorable gaming experiences ever.

This is not a VC release. It must be a remake of the triology for the 3DS or Wii U. Miiverse will help out a lot too if the MOTHER series ends up international.

Really pulling for a joint Virtual Console release on the Wii/Wii U and the 3DS. I’d love to be able to take these games on the go.

I still don’t want to get my hopes up just yet. But am under the impression that maybe the Nintendo survey that asked if you liked the name “Mother” or “EarthBound” better, Itoi meeting with people from Nintendo, and Itoi mentioning western Mother/EB fans all might be connected.

If this ends up as a MOTHER 2 and 3 re-release in the west, I will most likely spontaneously combust. Along with the internet.

Also, it doesn’t seem like Itoi would be getting this excited about a simple Virtual Console release. If anyone has access to “playable” versions of the games, it’s him. No, I think he’s excited to be able to play Mother 2 in some new way. I’m definitely leaning toward remake of Mother 2/EarthBound.

I probably sound like a broken record with this, but it’s common sense to an extent; why would Itoi be this involved if it was just a VC release?

Maybe the planets alligned and Itoi, Iwata, and Miyazaki met up and planned a Studio Ghibli Mother animated film. A boy can dream dammit!

If it is for the 3ds here is what would sell it (for me):
-Involve all three games, not just one maybe two
-On the 3ds or Wii, I don’t own a WiiU
-Comes to America, I own all three games in The American release of Mother 2 (Earthbound), Mother 1+2, and Mother 3, the latter two of which I wish I could read.
-Goes to Europe, who says they don’t deserve the game*
-Has a playable demo of Earthbound 64, it would just be cool to try Mother 3’s beta*

IF this project is some sort of 3DS remake and IF it does come to America… I would buy a 3DS just to play it. I would even pay extra for a special MOTHER 3DS bundle (like the upcoming Fire Emblem bundle).

It is actually more likely to come to Europe than to the US, as Europeans seem too enjoy RPGs more than Americans do. Just look at the Xenoblade case.

I’m also fairly optimistic that there will be an overseas release regardless of what it is. Keep in mind localization this time around wouldn’t require the whole Box and shipping deal; they could opt to just have it as a digital download.

Not to be a negative Nancy but when was the last time NoA ever gave us any Mother/Earthbound love? Don’t get me wrong, I’m praying everyday for a 3DS compilation.

I seriously don’t get that logic at all. NOA’s job isn’t to obsess over games, it’s to make them playbale to an American audiance. Let’s look at Smash Bros. Brawl: Did they omit everything EB related to spite American fans like every fanboy wants to believe? No, they didn’t. Does the game very often get mentioned in Nintendo Power? Yes it does. Did they take that little extra time to make a special Earthound logo for the New Pork City stage in Brawl? Yes, they did. Nintendo likes Earthbound as much as any other series. Hell, they show as much “Earthbound love” as Nintendo of Japan does; the timing for Mother 3 was just bad in terms of localization. That’s not to say it would’ve gotten released here if it was earlier in the GBA’s life.

Adding to that, I think there was some rumor about MOTHER 1+2 (the GBA ports) nearly coming to America. If that’s true…

(Although in the case of SSBB, they took out the EarthBound demo for international releases as far as I know.)

Mother 4 is being created by fans, and I can’t wait to see it…

Huh, this is really cool. I hope Mother 1 doesn’t get left out, though. It seems to be mostly forgotten, which makes me sad.

Mother 1 is a bigger deal among the Japanese Mother fans, since that was their first Mother game. I would assume Mother 1 would get some attention. Mother 3 is probably overlooked more in Japan.

To pepsimax, I’m not trying to argue but the facts are plain and simple. There has been no mother releases besides earthbound in america.

I personally would be fine with both a collection and a rerelease, and will get either if they are announced for North America. Also I really would love to see Club Nintedo NA start to give out Earthbound rewards like posters and such if/when it were released in North America.

Also I’d personally prefer if the series were called Mother, but I think it would be for the best if it were called Earthbound so that those who have played it in the 90s and aren’t keeping track of gaming news would recognize it on store shelves.

Well considering it’s a MOTHER “revival” my best guess is MOTHER 1 finally being released stateside. Think about it. The game was basically all planned out for release on NES including a translation and everything. But then it just sort of “died”. Dead; Revival, he’s a comic. Maybe it’s a sort of play on words. Just another speculation.

Oh and also since there have been a few NES games out already that have gotten a 3D makeover, maybe the reason it’s taking so long is cause they’re converting it over to 3D for the 3DS.

ORRRR maybe they’re giving it a BIG makeover like they gave Final Fantasy III when they finally brought it stateside on the DS.

-have a retro and modern mode
-in modern mode have a new battle style like “dillon’s rolling western” (where u run into a enmey and sends you into a battle room that looks like your enviorment)
-have a run button on all games
-giygas looks diffrent and his laier
-(maby) voise acting
-btw modern mode is 3-d and has a zelda type of view and graphics (windwaker graphics)
-classic would be the orignal
-classic has no vosie acting
