I’m thinking it will probably be a compilation, just because it would take less work/time/money to rerelease the games as they are. That said, remakes for all three could be really cool if done well… Man, I never thought I’d be thinking about this! Whatever Nintendo has up their sleeve, it’ll be better than the alternative- the series being unreleased forever. This’ll be fun to watch play out. 🙂

resetsurvivor said on Dec. 28, 2012

I don’t know … there’s something about that line ‘making it playable’ that kind of leads me to think their going to edit out/work around the copyrighted material.

2Sang said on Dec. 28, 2012

I’m hoping for a compilation, though I’m not certain that’s what it will be…

LucasPSI said on Dec. 28, 2012

I’m voting other. I personally think it’s going to be earthbound 64.

Earthbounder said on Dec. 28, 2012

Im hoping for a mother 1 remake… Just because if it is a compilation of all 3 it will be over shadowed… again… 🙁

DD said on Dec. 28, 2012

It’s hard to say. I think it might be a compilation but like Resestsurvivor said, it could be that they have to edit things out.

Worship said on Dec. 28, 2012

I think a visual remake of Mother 2/Earthbound only

Max said on Dec. 28, 2012

I think it is most likely an edit for VC release.

The Great Morgil said on Dec. 28, 2012

I think the compilation seems the most likely, and the “Work” being done on them is probably fixing the copyright issues so whatever they’re working on can be released over here.

Zackman said on Dec. 28, 2012

I voted on the VC/eShop option. That seems more likely to me, but at this point, I just hope it comes out in America.

Runaway dog said on Dec. 28, 2012

I think it will be a compilation on the 3DS. I don’t think he’d want to create all this hype for a VC release. That being said, how rare is Mother 2 and/or Mother 1+2 in Japan?

BJ Wanlund said on Dec. 28, 2012

I don’t care WHAT exactly Itoi-san is hinting at, I just want to see Nintendo give people in the west another chance to give the series another chance.

wiiarebrothers said on Dec. 28, 2012

I voted for the compilation, with some tweaks (mostly for Mother 1). Selling the game alone as it is today would be a tough sell (in Japan and in the west). And re-making the game would be a gargantuan task, and it would also make it look better than Mother 2 😛

EarthBoundfanman said on Dec. 28, 2012

I’m really hoping that it will be a compliation on 3DS. Part of me is thinking it might be a eShop/Virtual Console thing, but either way I’m excited to see what comes of this.

Skye said on Dec. 28, 2012

I’m really hoping that it’s a compilation with all 3 games for 3DS or individual downloads for VC/eShop. I hope it’s something involving the West though because if it’s just something for Japan, that’s going to probably be the last hope for anything here in America. If it’s not something for us, it’ll be the last straw and we’ll have no hope left. But alas, my fingers are crossed.

NintendoFan122 said on Dec. 28, 2012

I want MOTHER 1+2 on 3DS and DSi shops here in America. Also in Japan.

don said on Dec. 28, 2012

I’m hoping by “more playable,” he means “playable to more people,” i.e. Americans

Dr.Starky said on Dec. 28, 2012

Eartbound 64 was very likely just a false start for Mother 3. Considering that Mother 3 is already finished and that they seem pretty satisfied with how it turned out, I don’t think they’d be excited about returning to it.

Also, Earthbound 64 is fairly obscure even in the Mother fandom. It would probably be easier and more profitable to rerelease the games that have been getting a fair bit of underground hype than flesh out a mostly forgotten prototype.

Onion said on Dec. 28, 2012

I voted VC release. Why? I don’t want to get my hopes up.

Since we’re about 18 months away from Mother’s 25th anniversary there is a very slim chance we’ll see a compilation on cartridge but that is all I’ll allow myself to get excited for.

Starstormer said on Dec. 28, 2012

I voted visual remake of Mother 1. I know it’s a bit of a longshot but I’ve got my reasons. He did talk about making the series playable again which could mean a number of things but Mother 1 is probably more in need of an update than the other two.

PepsiMax said on Dec. 28, 2012

“Making it playable” does make me second guess my vote on a compilation, but I feel like if this was just editing some arguably minor copyright issues, Itoi really wouldn’t need to be involved. Especially since they seem to mostly be music related.

Amonogusa said on Dec. 29, 2012

Most likely, it’ll be a compilation of 1, 2, and 3, with edits around the more sensitive copyright stuff to make it more playable outside Japan. I’m hoping that they touch up the MOTHER 2 translation a little bit, but that’s not a terribly big deal.

easy said on Dec. 29, 2012

it will be an earthbound 3d remake for the 3ds just like the dragon quest series is doing (and tdid for the ds, ps2 etc)

Ronald said on Dec. 29, 2012

Most probably some artwork and sales thereof. I’m not expecting the projects being directly related to the game(s).

Nintendork said on Dec. 29, 2012

Someone in another post pointed out that maybe by EB64 and making something “playable” it would be releasing content exclusive to EarthBound 64. But I don’t know. I think they will have to do something big, to get better reception in JP as well as USA. Small things like bonus content would be white noise

Tourist said on Dec. 29, 2012

I think it could be all three. Digital releases and edits to allow localization are likely. Mother 1 remake is more wishful thinking.
I do think a digital offering is more likely, perhaps a 3D classics on 3DS?

Akuma said on Dec. 29, 2012

Mother 4.

PepsiMax said on Dec. 29, 2012

^ ha ha ha no.

Anonymous said on Dec. 29, 2012

^ ha ha ha yes.

Dr.Starky said on Dec. 29, 2012

He specifically said it’s not going to be Mother 4.

Considering that he thanked Starman.net when announcing this, I think there’s a pretty good chance whatever he’s gonna do is going to be released globally.

Satsy said on Dec. 29, 2012

There’s one false hope I’m holding, should Mother be ‘made playable’ again… It’s a simple thing, but probably not likely:

That they use the original Magicant cave map.

Y’know, the one that made sense (because you didn’t have to pass the whole cave to get to the exit, when you decide to grind Loid and Ana).

If no other map changes/reverts, I wanna see that one.

PepsiMax said on Dec. 29, 2012

Again, the amount of EB64 being tossed back and forth is confusing me. Everybody who knows Mother 3 knows EB64; they’re the same game! The suggestion of EB64 being revived I don’t think should literally be interpreted as working on an old N64 game, but rather restoring some cut content to the current Mother 3, or remaking the current Mother 3 with cut content. Honestly.

Tatsu_Ace said on Dec. 29, 2012

Actually, I think EB64 was gonna be a lot different than M3 because in the trailers we saw some unused stuff, like the train cart scene. Also, EB64 was supposed to be a lot longer than what we got in Mother 3. So I guess we’d have M3 but a lot more.

ANYWAY… I voted a compilation game because that made the most sense to me. As Mother’s 25th anniversary is coming up, I think it would be a nice way to put the games on the next gen systems. And crossing my fingers for The EB64 demo in it. Maybe?

Alexis said on Dec. 29, 2012

I think it’s going to be a compilation of all three, but I wish that it was a remake of any of the 3. Preferably 1, because I’ve never played it.

In all honestly, I really don’t care WHAT it is, as long as it’s available in my region.

earthbound64 said on Dec. 29, 2012

maybe Eearthbound64

naja said on Dec. 29, 2012

I really have no idea, so instead of what I think it might be, I voted what I sort of wish it could be, withint the possible parameters, so I voted a compilation.
If it’s VC/eShop, that’d be also cool but I wouldn’t bother to buy a digital release, unless there’s really any relevant upgrades to it.

PepsiMax said on Dec. 29, 2012

It’s the same, really. Same plot, characters, it’s the same with the exception of some features and other tidbits. The bulk is the same. People need to stop treating it like it’s some long lost Earthbound game that was kept secret instead of just an unfinished version of Mother 3. I feel like if it was “EB64” Itoi would have specifically mentioned “three.” Just saying “Mother” would probably either mean “Mother” as a series, or as in the first game.

Ness1985 said on Dec. 29, 2012

People need to understand that Earthbound 64 IS Mother 3. They started making it on the N64 and cancelled it for that system because they weren’t used to the 3D graphics, so they decided to make it for the GBA…that is all.

2Sang said on Dec. 29, 2012

^I agree that there’s very little chance (my opinion no chance) that EB64 is not going to get rereleased.
However, it’s not necessarily the same game. Much of the story is similar, but we know that there were some things changed from EB64 to M3. Ness was supposed to be in EB64, along with flint and claus (as a protagonist) having a more major role.

Apple Kid said on Dec. 29, 2012

As for those arguing over the EB64 thing: they are similar in many ways but different in equally many ways Example:
Characters (some)
Locations (some)
Enemies (some)
Different :
Characters (some)
Locations (some)
Enemies (some)
“Kraken” (2 headed plesiosaurus)
That thing that crawls out from the river
As for the minecart scene, a forum topic clarified that it dumped Lucas and Claus into a river, so I think it was originally used in an extended prologue which shows Hinawa allowing her sons to escape while she fights the Mechanic Dragon. This is just an example list there are more similarities/differences than this.

Apple Kid said on Dec. 29, 2012

Mechanic Dragon should be Mecha Dragon (auto correct).

Tatsu_Ace said on Dec. 29, 2012

Plus, the game was supposed to be A LOT longer. I’ve heard about 16 chapters, instead of eight. But yea, the bulk of the game would probably be the same, but playing what Mother 3 COULD have been, is probably why there’s so much hype around EB64. I don’t think they’d complete a half finished N64 game and put it on 3DS (hopefully!)but maybe if the polish up the demo, maybe as an unlockable secret in the “unknown Mother-related project” I’d be happy. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking, though.

Apple Kid said on Dec. 29, 2012

I promise this is my last post.@ 2Sang it is presumed that the 3-d model of “Ness” was a debug dummy or an early model for Lucas.

misterdigi said on Dec. 29, 2012

This is what I think it is (most likely scenario)…

Something related to Mother 3.

This is what I think it is (best case scenario)

Releasing Mother 2 on a next gen console (but it it’s original form. i. e. virtual console)

What I want it to be very badly…

Releasing Mother 1 in the states in some form (either on a next gen platform, or as is virtual console)
Re-doing Mother 2 on a next gen platform (or better yet continuing the mother lovin story from where 2 left off if you’ll pardon the pun.)

PsiWolf674 said on Dec. 30, 2012

I hate to derail the original topic further (maybe if there’s more to say then someone can make a topic about it on the M3 forums?), but I’d like to mention that pretty much EVERY big game goes through various stages of development in which content is removed. A good example that I think most people would be familiar with would be Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That game, similar to Mother 3, had started on the 64DD before being moved to regular cartridge form, and as a result had to have some stuff cut out. (M3 was moved to cartridge form too, meaning that M3 too would’ve had some of its features dropped even if it HAD been released on the N64.)

Even with all the stuff that was changed/removed, quite a bit of the N64 version still made it to the GBA: http://starmen.net/mother3/beyond_mother_3/n64_connections/

Back to the topic at hand… I voted for a compilation. It’s the one that makes the most sense to me for sure. Well, that and the VC/eshop option. The way he says “republication” makes me think that these may not be so much “remakes” as much as they’ll be… well, republished onto something more accessible to everybody.
(And hopefully that “everybody” includes the world outside of Japan.)

Mr. Saturn said on Dec. 30, 2012

I hope that it will be EarthBound 64 and Mother 1 Mother 2 and Mother 3 in a nintendo 3ds cartridge

Apple Kid said on Dec. 30, 2012

I doubt that the original Mother 3 (Earthbound 64) will ever see the light of day. While the line “making Mother playable” is weird, I don’t think that it is eluding towards a release of that game. But, it isn’t over ’till the fat lady (or skinny Japanese man) sings.

Tourist said on Dec. 30, 2012

PSIWolf674 Nailed it. For those thinking EB64 and Mother 3 are different games… well, that’s just because of it’s long development cycle. Pull any early prototype of a game still in progress, then compare it to the final product, and you’ll see differences. Happens with most games, we (general public) just don’t see it.

PepsiMax said on Dec. 30, 2012

In EB64’s case, we can say that a lot was cut mainly due to hardware limitations.

Eddy Rod Jr. said on Dec. 30, 2012

I’m thinking a compilation of remakes for all 3 of them.

BobStew said on Dec. 30, 2012

I’m guessing it’s a compilation, that will most likely be Japan only. I mean, NOA and NCL are still disagreeing about that one freakin’ song, and I’ve learned not to get my hopes up in any way, shape, or form for the series. The only smidgen of hope I have left is that whatever happens, Mato will translate it.

Midna said on Dec. 30, 2012

I’d like to remind all of you that neither of the first two Mother games were released on the Virtual Console _even in Japan_. (Before someone brings up M1+2 making a VC rerelease superfluous, remember that the original Kirby Super Star made the VC while its DS remake was still on shelves.) I’d like to think that Itoi’s announcement refers to the removal of copyright-infringing elements that have been preventing the game from getting an as-is rerelease (discounting M1+2) in any country.

Saggy said on Dec. 30, 2012

I’d like to add on to other people’s ideas. I think it’s also likely he may be changing the gameplay in the re-releases or whatever he may be doing. A lot of people were turned off from earthbound because they saw the combat as shallow.

Apple Kid said on Dec. 31, 2012

The combat system is not as bad as people make it to be. Lots of successful games had a similar one *ahemDragonWarriorahem*. And, frankly, the only difference between the battle system in the Mario rpg for the ends and the first two Paper Mario games was the battle’s perspective. If they changed it it would seem less Mother-ish.

Apple Kid said on Dec. 31, 2012

* ends=snes (auto correct)

Tourist said on Dec. 31, 2012

That’s an interesting thought. I mean, the battle system isn’t shallow, but they could include Music Timed Hits in remakes of 1+ 2 .

Max said on Dec. 31, 2012

Unless I’m mistaken, the Virtual Console is a glorified emulator, so re-releasing the games on that platform would seemingly require the least effort. In an older interview, Itoi said that he put together the MOTHER 1+2 compilation because he wanted people to be able to play them on a current system. This indicates to me that he’s not the sort of person who would rather make his work available (or “playable”) than alter it in any fundamental way. One source of hope for us American fans is that we know EarthBound only required a few minor adjustments to get the legal sign-off for VC release. Itoi’s “playable” tweet could have obviously referred to that. I don’t think there’s any chance that he’s working on a new version of EarthBound 64, though. And I doubt he’s making a graphical overhaul of MOTHER 1 or 2 either–as cool as that would be. That would require a lot of work, and I don’t think Mr. Itoi really enjoyed conceptualizing in 3D. A compilation of MOTHER 1-3 is definitely more likely, but I think a VC re-release is the likeliest. And even then, Nintendo may not be interested in an American import, as much as that would shock us, given Itoi’s interest in the Western fans. The fact that Itoi has been discussing us with Iwata, however, is an encouraging sign. Still, I think we should temper our expectations.

Max said on Dec. 31, 2012

I meant to say that I suspect Itoi is the sort of person who would rather make his work available than alter it in any fundamental way.

NessPKrocks said on Dec. 31, 2012

We all have to “bombard Reggie” to ensure the American release, when it actually comes.

Nunya Business said on Dec. 31, 2012

A Mother 1 remake would rock.

MissingPSI said on Dec. 31, 2012

I think it will be a remake of Mother 1, with some new things added, so when I play it, I don’t have to deal with the ‘ol “Same stuff, Different Graphics” deal.

David B. said on Jan. 2, 2013

I’m hoping for the first or second options in the poll.

Ness said on Jan. 2, 2013

Im hoping for a 3ds compilation personally. I mean it doesnt have to be in cartridge form. Im cool with just getting from the 3ds eshop.

spiderfreak1011 said on Jan. 3, 2013

Hikeau said on Jan. 3, 2013

I hope its a remake of mother 3. I wish it had all the stuff that was cut out from the N64 version.

Flint said on Jan. 3, 2013

I voted for the second option, but I am really hopping for a visual (and functional) remake of MOTHER 1, 2 and 3 doesn´t need to be redone, they would lose their charm.

crow said on Jan. 3, 2013

I think Itoi is planning to make a Mother anime series or movie.

Punky said on Jan. 3, 2013

Midan makes a good point, Japan didn’t get a VC release as well. Making Mother playable without some of the items that are making it “unplayable” on a game console, would see these things removed for a potential release. (If that is was Itoi means by his statement.) It’s hard to imagine some of those tidbits being changed when we know them, but at this point, any sort of release for the western side would just be a cause for celebration.

Punky said on Jan. 3, 2013

Midna* sorry

crow said on Jan. 3, 2013

Just a follow up:
If Itoi was going to make a Mother anime or movie trilogy, he should use clay animation similar to shows like Pingu as a reference to the clay models that were made during development of Mother 1 and 2.

Rusty Shackleford said on Jan. 3, 2013

Whoa, someone knows about Pingu here. AWESOME!

crow said on Jan. 4, 2013

Uh, is there a problem about me knowing about Pingu?

PepsiMax said on Jan. 4, 2013

Oh PLEASE, not an anime. PLEASE no. Clearly not the case though, as you don’t play an anime.

Rusty Shackleford said on Jan. 5, 2013

No, it’s the opposite of a problem.

Anyways, a lot of games became animes… I know it’s not the case, but…

crow said on Jan. 5, 2013

Guys, I’m just voicing my opinion. I would really love the series to be remade and released internationally. An anime series or movie trilogy about Mother 1-3 is not a bad idea when you think about it.

Ness1985 said on Jan. 6, 2013

^Every time I’m playing Mother 3, I can always see it being an epic anime.

Io said on Jan. 6, 2013

Perhaps remakes of MOTHER 1+2 in the style of MOTHER 3 with some of its “tweaks” in the battle system? The cuter sprite style and interesting battle system (timed hits) could attract a larger crowd of fans. Here’s hoping that even if the copyrighted songs are removed, similar sounding (I believe it’s called “Jimmy Hart Version?”)tunes will be used.

boundearth said on Jan. 7, 2013

Itoi said he’s trying to make MOTHER more PLAYABLE; I have no clue where you people get anime out of that. He’s clearly referring to the games.

Franklin Delano Donut said on Jan. 7, 2013

IMO, I think that there should be a remake of all the MOTHER games for the 3ds and wii u. The remakes should have updated 3D graphics as well as new gameplay mechanics. I believe that an anime series is a good way to promote the games if they do come out.

Mascott said on Jan. 12, 2013

If he’s making an announcement for Japan about a compilation, he’s teasing it at the right time for Reggie to go, “GUESS WHAT?! IT’S COMING TO AMERICA TOO,” at E3.

Lucifroz said on Jan. 18, 2013

Guys, calm your twerkin bootys.

He said playable, not an anime. (But to people who think an RPG can’t work as an Anime, go watch Persona 4:The Animation…)

I personally think its either a re-worked(Get rid of copyrighted problems.)compilation and/or E-shop/VC release.(Like you can get all 3 in a pack, or just 1 of them.)

And honestly, EB64? Guys, we aren’t in 1996. No body is going to make an N64 game in 2013.

Mrpinci19 said on Jan. 26, 2013

Maybe Mother 2 2 (what happened after mother 2 and before mother 3 )

Pebling said on Jan. 27, 2013

Yeah, I had hoped for a Mother 1 remake as well. It’s a really underrated game.

jdeo1997 said on Mar. 1, 2013

i hope for a compilation release, i mean come one, its what the fans want. that, and the technically only have to translate mother 1 (mother 3 was translated unofficially by a official translator)
