Tips for Buying EarthBound

October 5th, 2012 | Interviews, MOTHER 1

If you were playing Nintendo games in the 80s or very early 90s, you probably know who Howard Phillips is – he was basically the face of Nintendo, Nintendo Power, and the Nintendo Fun Club in those early years. For more info, see this Wikipedia article.

Anyway, he’s recently been posting some really cool stuff on Facebook like unknown game prototypes and rare promo materials from the early Nintendo days. He also recently did an AMA on Reddit and someone asked him about his thoughts on EarthBound Zero. His response was:

I remember it well – it was quirky and fun but unfortunately, timing was awful – we had the 4-game series Dragon (Quest) Warrior series queued up for release as the game was a huge hit in Japan and Final Fantasy was out as well and gathering an even bigger head of steam – great game but there were better (?) ones…

You can see more responses to his response here.

While I’m on the subject, he’s also working on a new game-related project you can read about here. I don’t know much about it but he seems pretty passionate about the project.

“Hope the Earthbound fanboys don’t see this one…” lol
I guess I understand their reasoning on that decision, though- it would make sense for Nintendo to focus on the games that they felt pretty certain would bring them in some serious cash. Sad that Earthbound Zero never got released at all after being put on the back burner, though… 🙁

Glad I asked this on the AMA! I never knew that about EBZ. Hope you guys enjoyed my comment, check out my gaming channel to know why I’m called ONLYUSEmeFEET. 🙂

When you look at it that way, I’m glad we got the SNES EarthBound instead of the original Earth Bound on NES. If the NES EB failed (and there was probably a very hiiiigh chance that it would have), then we might never have gotten the EB we know and love.

@ Poe is right. EB0 problably would have failed, which would mean 2 things. We wouldn’t have gotten the snes EB. We wouldn’t have gotten that possible release of EB64 either. But because of this we have to wait to 2064 to download the Rom of EB0 legally.
