In EarthBound Zero, Giegue/Giygas/Gyiyg is defeated when you sing a song to him. This got me thinking – what songs in real life bring me pain whenever I hear them? I know there are some, but I can’t think of any at the moment.
So now I ask you! What songs in real life cause you pain whenever you hear them? Share your pain!

105 Comments to Real-Life Pain-Inducing Songs
Most of the songs played on the local top-40 station, since I already hate them and have had to hear them SO OFTEN at work.
Anything by Taylor Swift.
I swear my diary from middle school is much deeper than anything she is capable of writing.
Either Cats in the Cradle or Taxi, both by Harry Chapin.
Both apply heavily to past events in my life, events that I’ve since moved past. But alas, these songs come back to remind me of the pains of my past.
Songs that have to do with love and a painful past… I feel you, Giegue.
Not a song, but there is the ‘brown noise’ which supposedly makes people defecate themselves.

When i was in high school, i worked at a walgreens drug store. One summer, right by the check out counter where i was stationed, they had a display of stuffed gophers from the movie Caddyshack that sang the opening song from that movie whenever you pressed a button on them. All. Ficken. SUMMER! I kept hearing that song for three months straight. The worst was little kids who would press the buttons on all of them, resulting in a music round from hell. To this day i can’t hear that song without freaking out, covering my ears and going “La La La”, sometimes even getting in the fetal position.
God, I hate that damn Caddyshack song. The movie’s pretty funny, but i just hate that song.
Hey, /I/ was about to say the town theme from King’s Quest V! Ahahaha.
For real, though, that is literally painful to listen to.

There’s a song out there, I forget what its called. But it’s something about being somebody’s hero. The girl I love put that song on a cd for me in college. Then we broke up. But to this day when I hear it, it hurts.
Most of what people are mentioning is just stuff they’re stick of, or popular stuff.
A song that literally used to cause me physical pain, and give me a headache every time, was Captain Wedderburn, by Great Big Sea. I’m really not sure why, because it’s not loud, it’s not screechy, or anything like that. Just something about it didn’t sit right with me.
Although it doesn’t anymore. I love the song, and I’m glad I can actually listen to it now.

Do sound effects count? The sound that plays in the GBA port of Link to the Past when you go from the Light World to the Dark World makes me physically cringe. That distorted sound is the biggest reason why I can’t play that port. Ever.
There’s also “Graduation (Friends Forever)” by Vitamin C that pains me to listen to. Vitamin C was a mediocre pop star over a decade ago who didn’t accomplish much, but she did sing the graduation song, which is now played at EVERY high school graduation. It’s sad and I hate hearing it.

I would like to mention Videogames by Black Out Band and the title screen for Crazy Bus, but I don’t really think those are songs. Especially the latter…

My high school graduation incorporated Photograph by Nickelback, which in my opinion, is a horrible song.
As for songs that cause me pain, I’m not very big on metal, as it hurts my sensitive ears. Though did anyone see ParaNorman? The climax of that movie reminds me of Mother 1.
A couple of years ago, when (also) in highschool,I first listened to Revolution 9. The very first time I was foolish enough to listen to it, full on and while playing backwards.
It took me a looong time to even hear a piece of that song again without freaking out.
Luckely, I can now safely listen to it whitout any consequences…
TURNMEONDEADMAN TURNMEONDEADMAN WEBURIEDPAUL TURNMEONDEADMAN…
Justin Bieber and One Direction are pain-inducing to everyone except their fans.

The worst song ever is I just Wanna Fly. Just hearing it makes me want to die on the spot.
I really don’t understand what Is wrong with Justin Bieber, his dogs are okay, my main question is. Why do you not like Justin Biever. Because everyone started hating him, or do you actually dispise him. Either way, just Bieber has good dogs, and I bet if the some of songs have been released with author I identified, they’d like him.
ANYWAYS!!!! When my Grandma died, we always used to listen to Fur Elisè. When she died, the song caused to much pain, and I can’t bare to be around people when the song is playing. But the strange thing is, when I play it on the piano, I’m not bothered, but if I’m listening, Im not pleased.
You know, staying on Earthbound topic, I would have to say the Mu Training song. I honestly cringe whenever it comes up during the EB soundtrack, thank god it’s only like 30 seconds long. Also some of the Giygas battle themes are pretty freaky too.
Well, in real life, Nicki Minaj music makes me question humanity.
In EB terms, I cry when Smiles and Tears plays. 🙁

Any song by Die Antwoord makes my brain spasm in pain.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
any world song from kingdom hearts.if you too played that game for hours not knowing where to go, you’ll understand where im coming from. especially that dreaded tarzan song and olympus collisseum. now that i think of it, all the world songs are equally annoying.
The silent hill theme makes me a bit uncomfortable. It’s not bad, but it just makes me feel scared and unsafe.

Any song by Nicki Minaj. Uuugh how I hate her.
This is a bit related to EarthBound, but one song that made me uneasy ever since seeing the video for it as a kid was “Welcome to the Machine” by Pink Floyd. Of course, any EB diehard would know “Belch’s factory” sounds incredibly like “Welcome to the Machine”, and everytime I’m in Belch’s Factory, I cringe extremely hard since it brings me those disturbing memories of that creepy video.

Somewhere over the rainbow.
It played during my best friend’s funeral and now it makes me all depressed whenever I hear it.
The boss battle theme from Secret of Mana, well, just the beginning. I never figured out how to beat that praying mantis monster thing without dying at least once. I think the boss is broken, especially its gaseous attack, which is unavoidable, I think. Prove me wrong, though, I’m only just starting…but yeah, the song’s BEGINNING, at least, does sound blaring and literally hurts my ears.
The super bomb sound effect from metroid fusion kills me. “chills”
Also the ditty kong racing theme… Yeah I have some personal problems with that game…
The song that plays when you fight Giegue in Mother.
screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeescreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeescreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer
and pretty much any of the other same 30 overplayed zep/acdc/rush/aerosmith/zztop/queen songs that are played over and over the classic rock station my coworkers listen to.

Oh, another one: the redead shriek from OOT
Anything that the hippies and hoodlums listen to now a days (but to be specific, Justin bieber, rap, Taylor swift, lil wayne, and beat boxers or what ever they are called in 2012) they should legend to the Coasters, Groucho Marx, and Queen.

Did you just WANT to read thirty comments listing whatever top 40 nonsense happens to be on at the moment? I just find that garbage forgettable, of course I’m not in high school anymore so I don’t have to deal with it.
For me, any of the covers from Across the Universe and the sound of that Fred guy’s voice from Youtube. Sometimes they put a five second Fred ad before a video and if I’m wearing headphones at the time, I literally have to grab an aspirin. He has literally caused me physical pain and headaches.
As far as video game music and sound effects, I’d say the “Clark Kent” music from the NES Superman game, the “music” that plays between stages in the original Splatterhouse, and the beginning music of Karnov. The “voices” in Ikari Warriors 2, as well as Jennifer in Splatterhouse pleading, “Help me”, are some of the most jarring game sound effects. Mind you, these are music and sounds I find disturbing, but they’re not necessarily bad.
Quoted by SamuelTurn, “Katy Perry, Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber, One Direction” basically all of these. Worst part is that all of the people at my school puts these up on speakers frequently.

Most painful video game music I’ve ever heard has got to be the music from the Chinese Pokemon Gold game for the NES. At least that’s what YouTube tells me it is.
Well Meet Virginia by Train makes me feel nauseous when I hear it, but it’s just linked to some nauseous memories…
The hidden music from EB
and the game over music from DKL3 and DKC… o___o
can’t sleep with them in my head…
every song ever made, listened to with headphones and the volume maxed out

“Call Me Maybe”
Actually, most pop songs, really. All I can think about whenever I’m subjected to the radio is how, if only instrumental film and TV scores were popular enough to be played on mainstream stations, there’d be none of this nonsense where the scores I want on CD are never released, or when I buy a soundtrack and THE ONE BGM CUE I wanted from the movie is missing from it.
I can’t listen to Owl City anymore without having painful memories dredged up.
the closest thing i have is sad music, where i cry for some reason. its the reason i hate justin beiber.

When you guys get out of high school you’ll instantly stop caring about pop music.
I can understand hating it when you’re in school and subjected to it all day. One of the best things about being an adult is nobody ever pushing shitty music on you.
Most of the songs that are released nowadays make me feel pain. In other words, I don’t listen to 90% of all radio stations.

Cave Story recomposed’s Living Waterway. It starts out beautiful, but then the wubs come in and make it deafening.
Awesome! look at that a Chrono Trigger Battle Engine for EB! 30 minutes later, Ok time to play, patched the gigantic ips file with my ear—- WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IM BEING RICKROLLED ON THE ZSNES!
Personally for me it is anything sung rick astley
More Video Game music examples:
I hate HATE hate HATE hate (insert mind-bogglingly and very long random time period here) HATE hate HATE hate the Crystal theme from Final Fantasy. If there’s anything that makes me lament myself really badly and induces severe sadness, it’s this ear worm of a theme!
A lot of these examples are funny.
It’s hard for me to decide what kind of music causes me pain. Ah..I think I have one. My father loops Enya music over and over at least twice a week. I get annoyed and get headaches from having to constantly listen to that reverberating voice.
It wouldn’t hurt him to try listening to something else.
They arent songs but anything from the “totheark” videos and some “marblehornets” videos cause a little bit of physical pain and other reactions in my body (mostly my eyes tear up or my sinuses start acting strange)
Here’s a bit of a preview of what I’m talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrvjDtghdk0&feature=plcp
A few of of Reel Big Fish’s hidden tracks cause me physical pain as well (You’re Gonna Die and the one that appears after Unity)

Heavily sexualized brazilian funk.
The shrieking sound as you go up the stairs to fight the Starman in the zoo in Earthbound Zero. A few seconds is tolerable, but after all the time it takes to explore all the rooms and stuff… GEEZ! No wonder all those animals went insane! D:<

Merzbow, and I don’t necessarily mean that in a negative way.
Also, these comments reak of “I was born in the wrong generation.”
I really don’t understand why people have to tie in “ZOMG 90’s KIDS!!” into “my faviorite song is,” same goes for, umm, 20’s kids? I necessarily take those comments as flake, and it shouldn’t affects people’s opinions on songs, AND TV shows, video games etc.

lol some of these responses
glad to see someone mentioned crazybus! 😀
BUT NO MENTIONS OF SPEEDCORE? EXTRATONE? HARSH NOISE?
ALRIGHT I’LL GIVE MY OWN EXAMPLE:
http://pinkamenaparty.bandcamp.com/album/lets-buck-shit-up
the last few tracks on this album were a bit painful for me, especially “FORSEHUCKER”
“CLAUSTROPHOBIC VOID” was a bit painful but I liked it enough to keep it. Cool sound design. 🙂
the song’s called family portrait by p!nk. nothing like that has ever happened to me but it did happen to a friend of mine and i’m in tears whenever i hear it.
Revolution Number 9 by the Beatles.
I just…can’t listen to that song. It’s terrifying. Moreso if it’s in reverse.

nightcore
The final boss from gigyas for the longest time had the lavender town effect, nasuea, headache, even suicide attempts.
Of course this has long passed but it still does give me the chills when I come across it, as its often used for shock value.
I SAW YOUR FACE, IN A CROWDED PLACE-
Man, me and my mom where looking at the hypocrisy of the lyrics, and finally we just shut it off. MOTHER-SON BONDING TIME!
Sorry for double posting, but ENYA TOO. Ugh, don’t want to be mean or anything, but I just can’t stand it. It depresses me, and when I get depressed, I get headaches. Bleah.
I would say giygas theme (Is that even music?) and
lavender town’s theme. The one from red/blue. I don’t why but 8-bit music either scares me or cheers me up.
It’s true that lavender town from Pokemon Green is high pitched and can cause headaches. The deaths weren’t real though, that was just a creepypasta
Most Dubstep
some are ok, but most are just obnoxious WUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUB
The Cave theme from Atlantis no Nazo brings back some horrible, horrible memories.
FINAL ZONE ! *song starts playing* *quickly interrupted by death sound and stage start theme*
MOTHER 3 song: It is Finished…
It’s not terrible, and it doesn’t cause me physical pain to my ears, it just makes me REAAALLY sad, since i was playing MOTHER 3 when i was at my grandpa’s funeral, trying to take my mind off of it…When i was playing the final battle. Real great idea on my part.
i would have to say the 2nd generation rune factory theme song every time it starts and says “spread out your wings and fly high” and through out the whole song it reminds me of all my pets that died through out the years
György Ligeti’s Étude no. 1. It’s “neo-classical” music that gives me a headache.
A sad song (in my opinion) is Nikolai Medtner’s Piano sonata no. 2 in Op. 25 in E minor “Night Wind.”
I HATE JUSTIN BIEBER
Any music box melodies or lullabies some children’s toys
play make me incredibly sad and make me cry sometimes. Nostalgia maybe :S
The town theme from Kings Quest V.
