A while back 1up.com posted a teaser of an interview with Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka, one of the musicians who worked on MOTHER 1 and MOTHER 2/EarthBound. It looks like the full interview is finally up – check it out here!
Among many things, he discusses EarthBound, his approach to composing the music for EarthBound, the size of the MOTHER 2 fanbase, and more. There’s also this quote:
The sampling issue is a little sensitive, because… well, I don’t know for sure, but it sounds like that is one of the reasons EarthBound is not able to come out in America. It’s a topic we should probably avoid.

Sorta but not really, hence this: “A while back 1up.com posted a teaser of an interview” 😛
Damn. I guess we really do now come to a close as to why it was never released here again. I think from all the data and interviews we’ve gathered, it’s clear that the reason it never came out here is because of
Aliens.
It’s because there’s too much truth in the game about reality. Earthbound could make people start a war lol
I found that link ( http://earthboundcentral.com/2011/09/hirokazu-tanaka-talks-earthbound/ ) a while ago and…I forgot if I read it…
People should read the whole article when they have the time, it’s really insightful.

Haha it seems like he really dodged the sampling question…
Wow, I never knew how involved he was with Nintendo. Well, according to him, not so much anymore. Now it’s more with the whole confusing Game Freak/Creatures/The Pokémon Company thing. I can’t even remember which one it was. What I find myself wondering is if he ever even went to school for music or anything like that or if he just went, “Today, I’ll make some music” and created what we all know and love today.

The stuff he said about writing music for Wrecking Crew vs Metroid was really interesting!

I can’t help but feel that “Hip Tanaka Doesn’t Talk about EarthBound” would be a better title. o_o He pretty much dodged the topic and ran.
I found on TCRF image history screenshots for the battle debug menu in Earthbound in action! Anyone care to get in touch with the author of this amazing discovery?

Do you have a link?
I wonder how much credit for Mother music Hip Tanaka can really take. He mentions in the interview how he doesn’t much like making pop-ish music with a distinct melody, and Earthbound was full of catchy melodies. From the interview, Mr. Tanaka seems to prefer making vague ambient music…
