Tips for Buying EarthBound

July 23rd, 2012 | EarthBound, Images, MOTHER 3, Videos

It’s time for more mini-update mayhem!

Swamp Bicycle

meleemario sent:

Hi there Tomato!

I am not entirely sure if something like this has already been documented, but if not. I was reading on TV Tropes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheDevTeamThinksOfEverything) (Check the RPG section, then look for Earthbound) that if one rides the Bike in Deep Darkness after beating the game, the Bike makes special sound effects when riding upon the water. I went to go check with my own ears, and indeed it does! I have included the sound effect it makes which I recorded through my soundcard using bsnes. The higher pitched sound is riding upon the shallow water, while the lower pitched sound is riding upon the really deep water! (If this has already been documented, feel free to disregard this).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

MOTHER 1, 2, and 3 Medley

LucasTizma tweeted this video at me:

Flying Discs

NorthofOnett has made some EarthBound-themed flying discs!

MOTHER-y game

Ayarp sent in:

I was in the japanese internet some days ago and stumbled upon this doujin game called タオルケットをもう一度 (taorutekkomouichido romanized, I believe).

I ended up in their wiki, and from hat I could guess, the game has some inspiration on MOTHER series. Here’s some screenshots of it. It would be pretty cool to see it translated, specially because it’s a RPG VT game, just like Yume Nikki and some others, so I guess it would be pretty easy to translate. Besides, it’s as strange as Mother (the game starts with you waking up in a room that’s filled with cows and poo).

MOTHER 2 and 3 Cosplays

Adam e-mailed me with:

Hi there!

I have submitted here before (the piano book MIDIs a while back) but I just wanted to share with you some photos from a MOTHER photoshoot from this past weekend, at Animazement in Raleigh, NC. I am the Ness with the collared shirt, and the Lucas is actually my wife! (Our Flint and Claus were a real life couple too, so that should explain a few things about some shots ^_^;)
Anyway, here’s a link to the album on my wife’s facebook so if you wanted to share them you can use any of them that you want (totally understand if you don’t care for the FlintxClaus or NessxLucas though haha)!

Have a great day!

Ask Giegue!

Crav submitted this:

I stumbled onto this tumblr page which is exactly what it looks like.

Ask Giegue

Looks like there’s a fairly huge amount of content here that been made in a few short months. A lot of it is pretty funny too.

Some Music Tidbits

Anonymous Friend said:

I’ve been doing a bit of research on EarthBound lately… in particular, it’s about documenting all the musical references in the game that are either audio-based or some sort of visual/textual reference. I haven’t come across anything ‘amazing’ as of now, but there’s been quite a few things I have bumped into that has made me stroke my chin, maybe open up a small debate on the topic or I could just be dead wrong on all accounts.

Two things I would like to note, which are obvious (I think so anyways) but not openly shown around are:

-Bus Ride, Harry Mancini’s Peter Gunn Theme
-LiveHouse/Chaos Theatre, Bo Diddley’s Clock Strikes Twelve

*The Grateful Dead has covered Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode numerous times.

Unfortunately, due to my lack of music history, there are so many themes that ring a bell with me and I am quite sure that I have heard elsewhere but I cannot for the life of me put anyone’s name to them… there are easily five or six in-game melodies that I just run into dead ends when trying to find their sources because of this.

… and of note, I think there’s quite a few references in Blue Oyster Cult’s music and album art that has just gone completely unnoticed by everyone, as they are one of my favorite bands, I’ll keep looking through their materials and see if I can find anything worth noting beyond their obvious use of ‘psychic powers’ as recurring album subject matter and material for songs.

The influence on these tunes I just fired your way are pretty obvious… I’ll get back to you with some of the more crazy ideas when I do a bit more research on the topic(s) at hand and make them sound more like educated theories than sort of an ignorant ‘first glance’ deal.

MOTHER 3 Let’s Play

Ralph sent me this:

Hello there Mato. I just recently started my Let’s Play of Mother 3, which happens to be my favourite game of all time. I would appreciate it greatly if you spread the word about it because I want this Let’s Play to be one that everyone can enjoy.

Here’s the link to my channel: Link

I also did Runthroughs of Mother and EarthBound. Even if this isn’t posted I’d like to thank you for at least taking the time to read this.

Cosplayers at Anime Expo

John Q. e-mailed this the other day:

So a few weeks ago, I attended Anime Expo 2012 in Los Angeles, California. It was the first convention I have ever attend and I had a blast.

Anyway, while I was there, I managed to pick up an actual copy of MOTHER 1+2 on the Game Boy Advance for $50 (a good price if you ask me). After purchasing the game, I thought it would be fun to go around the convention and take a picture with whatever EarthBound cosplayer I could find. I only managed to take a photo with four Ness cosplayers, but it was funny and they were just happy to see another MOTHER/EarthBound fan.

So there’s a story of mine that I thought I would share with you and the site.

Okami Thingy

Digsu sent this in:

Okami Official Complete Works, the info book for the PS2/Wii game Okami, features this mock screenshot depicting what the game could possibly look like if it were a retro RPG. It’s not a perfect match, but it does look somewhat similar to the battle screen of Earthbound Zero. This image (among others) was apparently featured in some e-mail magazine around the time Okami was launched.

I actually get this sort of thing a lot, but pretty much 99% of the time anything that seems like a parody of EarthBound Zero in a mainstream Japanese game is really just a parody of old Famicom RPGs in general. There were LOTS and LOTS of RPGs that had this look back in the 80s and 90s (many of which I even fan-translated), to the point of oversaturation I’d even say. It’s just that most of them were never released outside of Japan, so people tend to think anything with this look is an EarthBound Zero clone.

For reference, here are some examples from three different games I pulled up in no time flat:

MOTHER 3 Movie Trailer

Hunter sent this in:

It’s okay, but I’ll show you any way

タオルケットをもう一度 is actually “taoru ketto wo mou ichido”, I think. You put “tekko” instead of “ketto” and missed the “wo”.

Jason said on Jul. 23, 2012

Re: SomeUser

Close! It’d be “Taoruketto wo mou ichido”. A towelkette is kinda like a bed covering/sheet made out of towel-like material. ^^

I don’t remember seeing it in the states, but it’s popular here in Japan in the summer.

NecrosaroIII said on Jul. 23, 2012

Regarding the Okami game, yeah, its really just a Dragon Quest clone. EarthBound Zero is itself one of those.

@ Jason

Oh, I didn’t know. That’s cool.

Huh… that’s interesting about the bike. Never thought of that. I’ll have to try it out, except I’m trying to see what happens if I never get the bike (amongst other items) in my current playthrough.

>Blue Oyster Cult
>Happy Happy Cult. A cult that paints things blue

Coincidence? Maybe. I’d love to hear what the other connections are! I am obsessed with music trivia.
