Tips for Buying EarthBound

May 28th, 2012 | EarthBound, Hacking, Videos

I talked about it plenty over the past week, and here it is finally – the EarthBound Reshuffler v1.0!

As previously explained, this is a program that lets you make randomized EarthBound hacks with the push of a button. My unofficial slogan I just made up for it is:

Funny, crazy, and hair-pulling.

Check out the page I made for it here for the download link, pics, info, sample patches, and more!

And while I’m at it, here’s a video of some of the stuff it can do:

Anyway, I hope you’ll check it out and have fun! It’s definitely breathed new life into EarthBound for me, at least. Now if we can just get Fangamer to do a Fanfest using a hack made by this 😛

IIRC battle bgs appear glitchy after you win if you try to layer two 4BPP BGs.

Mothermania said on May. 28, 2012

I’d love to introduce one of these shuffles to a new player as the real game. The reaction would be priceless!

Pigmask Private said on May. 28, 2012

So far I’ve played “Clop Tire” and “Sink Moo”

Both had issues. One crashed when I got into an enemy battle, and the other one replaced Lardna Minch’s sprite with Dungeon Man, and when she killed Buzz Buzz I got trapped in her foot.

Pokey Means Buisness said on May. 28, 2012

I tried the random enemies, but they had SUPER STRONG attacks and made it hard to get through the game. 🙁

Skulryk said on May. 28, 2012

Oh man, I would totally play this for the next funfest!

Ninten999 said on May. 28, 2012

I can’t wait till EB0 reshuffler

Mato said on May. 28, 2012

Mr. Tenda: the thing is, I thought I could get away with just using one layer for everything, that way there’d be no need to worry about layer counts. In the program I always set the second BG to 0. Is that the wrong way to do that?

KingOfSwords said on May. 28, 2012

I want.

Mr. Tenda said on May. 28, 2012

Oh wait… yeah, sorry! I remember I had the same glitchiness happening as a result of using a 2bpp BG on its own WITHOUT a second layer. So you need to layer the 2bpp ones with another 2bpp layer, but always have the second layer be 0 for 4bpp BGs. Also, I don’t think you can layer a layer with itself.

Mato said on May. 28, 2012

Sounds like a sinister maze of doom that gets trickier with each step 😛

santiagoff said on May. 28, 2012

Stupid Lardna Minch… her sprite is now one of the Moles and I can’t get through that part (after she kills Buzz Buzz). Even with a Walk Thru All I just can’t walk past her! Though I could try talking to Pokey’s dad from behind the sofa, but I’m not sure that’d work…

KingOfSwords said on May. 28, 2012

Coming this summer from Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, and everything else ever…

Stuff Wheel

This looks awesome, I’ll try out my shuffled game sometime soon.

KingOfSwords said on May. 28, 2012

Huh. It said “CHSUM: FAIL” for the chsum thingy. And after taking a few steps out of Ness’s bed I pressed a button and the game froze, then went to black.

Crav said on May. 28, 2012

Two things.

1. What is this .NET Framework it’s saying I need to use the program?

2. I did eventually go back and play a good chunk of Drunk Butt. The clumsy robot’s event was glitched, however. You might want to fix that in the future or I’d imagine all hacks made with this program will end there, which seems like a shame.
Actually, I’d imagine 99% of them will never make it past monkey cave because of sprite replacement, but I’m not sure there’s anything you can do about that.

TheMrSaturnGuy said on May. 28, 2012

I have been waiting for this for SO LONG and here it is, in a tiny program. Thank you, Mato.

Mato said on May. 28, 2012

Crav: Programming Windows stuff has always been a big pain for programmers, so years back Microsoft created a programming library that simplifies it. That library (or technically a framework) is called .NET: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework

Good point with the monkey caves, I hadn’t thought of that. In a future version I could try to make it so that people-sized objects stay people-sized or less, although that’s kinda tough. That’s why I included the stuff in the readme about how to get past trouble spots, in case people hit impassable parts of the game.

Kyosuke said on May. 28, 2012

This looks like so much fun; I gotta try this!

Clockwork64 said on May. 28, 2012

I think E bound like this Need a new name…..

If You ask me It whould be MixBound

Clockwork64 said on May. 28, 2012

MixBound XD

Alchemic said on May. 28, 2012

I did some looking at enemy data / experimenting with battle actions to see what could be randomly assigned without breaking stuff. Here’s what I’ve got so far:

BusterTheFox said on May. 29, 2012

I’ve been waiting for this. XD Looks like it might have a few problems going on with it, though. In any case, I’m going to be up ALLLLLLL night making new versions of EB. If I randomize any good ones, I’ll make sure to upload them somewhere! xD

PriestessPaula said on May. 29, 2012

“requires Windows operating system with .NET libraries” Ugh, of course.

Mato said on May. 29, 2012

Okey-doke, I’ve updated it to 1.01 to make it so the Clumsy Robot battle ends properly.

Username? What's that? said on May. 29, 2012

I am so confused….

Andydark said on May. 29, 2012

Frankie became some generic mouse and almost impossible to defeat because he uses an “electric attack” (PK Thunder) and does 150 damage with each hit when it connects. D:

Crazy earthbounder said on May. 29, 2012

Beep boop whaaablamm!!!!! My mind cannot compute the level of dopeness of this. I played earthbound to death, but this is gives it a crazy twist. Thanks mato you just gave me a reason to not write my English paper.

TWM said on May. 29, 2012

I got ‘Socks Koopa’. It played Because I Love You during the night sections at the start and Ness’ house’s theme was replaced with the drug store theme, an awesome start. I haven’t played that much though because of exams.

eb freak said on May. 29, 2012

@Crazy earthbounder
As itoi said dont let it interfear with your studies…

KingOfSwords said on May. 29, 2012

I got a most definitely clean ROM and made a completely new hack, called “Poo Sad”. Now to see if I can get out of Ness’s room this time…

KingOfSwords said on May. 29, 2012

Ooh and I forgot to ask a question: Is Hidden Track among the possible musics that can be used in random places?

Mato said on May. 29, 2012

Yep, it’ll sometimes show up in battles too.

KDchompe said on May. 29, 2012

lovin this so far although i found a problem with the first enemy (normally spiteful crow) its sprite outside of battle is music notes and they cant connect with me and start the battle they just fly all around me and nothing happens

Mato said on May. 29, 2012

That happens sometimes, I think it’s because some sprites don’t have hit boxes. I found them amusing so I left them in 😛

Robert said on May. 29, 2012

oh wow, it just hit me, that was the bicycle theme in Earthbound, in bits of it I was humming Queen’s I want to ride my bike.

KingOfSwords said on May. 29, 2012

So I started playing my hack, “Poo Sad”. Some intriguing moments…

*For some reason Tracy first appeared as a Scarabian merchant, then Dungeon Man, then a Tenda.
*Ness’s door gets busted open…by a cow. DUN-dun-dun-dun-doooooooo!
*The first enemy I encountered was a “Freaky Plant”. Its battle background is the Giygas you-know-what. Freaky indeed. I can’t wait to see the real Giygas, he’ll be hilarious.
*Buzz Buzz stopping time and killing the Starman Jr. on the first turn.
*Pokey being useful in battle.

KDchompe said on May. 29, 2012

hahahaha killed him on first turn? compared to the starman i got who killed me in one turn because buzz buzz used PK favorite omega which does nothing haha. on a side note in my version “bush best” the ghost of jeff haunts my house telling me useless facts about dogs

Clockwork64 said on May. 29, 2012

the music makes me want to do the Wess and Salsa Dance X)

Freezair said on May. 29, 2012

This is a tiny piece of brilliance.

Some gems from “Earthbound: Nose Happy”:

* The opening music was the shop theme. A perfect intro for the wa-wa-wacky hijinks that await!
* Pokey and I switched moms! Or at least, my mom had his mom’s sprite. Today, on “Wife Swap: Onett Edition…”
* The Onett Police Department is now staffed by hippies, ghosts, and Venus. I guess everyone’s gotta work somewhere before they get discovered…
* Pokey is now a “Murky Punk,” and he steals items! Plus, King learned PSI skills somehow, and tried healing me. D:
* Picky summoning lightning, and TOTALLY MAULING the starman (which was actually a kraken). The game didn’t dub him the Victorious Thingy for nothing!
* Finally, this bizarre… thing happened to me: I was poisoned in the “Starman” fight. Using items and Mom, I kept myself alive, but I somehow managed to die during the cutscene where Pokey’s mom kills Buzz Buzz. Luckily, I was able to walk right over and keep the plot moving after I recovered, but still… very odd.

HexploringUser said on May. 30, 2012

Why are headered ROMs the only accepted format?
I know that most tools such as PK Hack will only support headered ROMs, but the emulator with the most active development and most frequent updates, bsnes, will no longer support headers, making it tedious to use hacks made with these tools. Requiring headers in this program will perpetuate the problem.

In EarthBound: Fancy House, Onett has creepy music, the Police Office has Giygas music and the Town Hall has Moonside music, Lardna and sudden loud noises when you go up the stairs.

I’m scared of this game now T.T

Digsu said on May. 30, 2012

One of the more hilarious things I got was Dungeon Man working at the Onett burger shop. Guess he got a part-time job.

KingOfSwords said on May. 30, 2012

Those dang Sharks keep poisoning me. And somehow a mouse disguised itself as a steamshovel. I love this already and I haven’t even gotten to Frank.

Mato said on May. 30, 2012

HexploringUser: I follow bsnes with great regularity, so I thought about it, but in the end I went with what was easiest for everyone. bsnes comes with the ROM purifier/converter too, so it’s not totally unmanageable if you’re using one of the latest versions.

Kiriplant said on May. 30, 2012

Hahaha, this is great! It really does renew EarthBound for me. Props to you, Tomato.

The generated name I got was “Winter Fuzz”. It was awesome having King and Pokey (or, Ill-tempered Music as he was called in battle) having Crashing Boom Bang. They also had some PSI, but couldn’t execute it since they don’t have PP.

I’m really having some fun playing through this.

Midna said on May. 30, 2012

The first enemy I encountered in EarthBound: Winter Koopa was a Kraken recolor that kept poisoning me with a Tropical Rocket. Starman Jr.’s replacement went down in less than one turn, a Mimic Fish I somehow picked up keeps poisoning everyone, and a Shark outside the arcade turned into a bear with Giygas music. And Picky is stalking me.

This is the best anything ever.

KingOfSwords said on May. 30, 2012

I’m now at the battle with the cops in “Poo Sad”…

*The background of the battle with the Titanic Ant replacement was glitchy.
*The Giant Step dungeon was filled with drinking guys, Ness ghosts that could teleport and always died when I tried to fight them, and Pokey.
*My favorite part…Instead of a Cop, I get an “Educated Destruction”, a version of Giygas’s first form with Hippie battle music. They don’t do much, other than stomping with “her” giant foot and dropping Swollen HP-suckers.
*Captain Strong himself was a “Brittle Mushroom” with no real attacks.

KingOfSwords said on May. 30, 2012

Oh, and I forgot…When Captain Strong told me to follow him, Ness instead turned around, walked out of the police station, and still ended up in the same room as Strong.

Pokey Means Buisness said on May. 30, 2012

The only question I have about this game is related to giygas. Exactly how will the final boss battle be like?

Joe's Crab Shack said on May. 30, 2012

Pokey Means Buisness: It depends on the games random variation. I got a Giygas with a Duengon Master dude for the outside battle sprite

KDchompe said on May. 30, 2012

got ot the giants step dungeon and an enemy dropped the dreary scrap which its discription reads “A piece of broken equipment that looks like a satellite dish jeff should be able to fix it” AWWWWWWW YEA!!!!

KingOfSwords (CLICK HERE) said on May. 31, 2012

Is there anywhere in the game with a Giygas-controlled doctor? Cause I think I found a sprite for one.

KingOfSwords said on May. 31, 2012

I met an enemy with a battle music that sounded like ten seconds of a person saying “WOW! Talk to me…talk to me…talk to me…talk to me…”

Is this supposed to be a sound effect somewhere or something?

H.S said on May. 31, 2012

^It’s the music that plays when you select “Yep” after naming all your characters.

eb freak said on Jun. 1, 2012

You should make npc’s text make sense so it can have a new story!

Strontium said on Jun. 1, 2012

I tried the Green Laser sample patch, and these are my findings.

* The boss by Giant Step “explodes” dealing massive damage, but it doesn’t get hurt from using it. It can easily do three times you HP in damage with no drawback.

* Similarly, the Blue Blue Cultists or whatever have some fire-breath attack that does over 300 damage. Doesn’t seem balanced.

* I couldn’t move at all after talking to the guy who gives you your first Exit Mouse.

* I got stuck when one cultist sprite was too big to pass, so I quit there. Guess save-swapping with a clean ROM is mandatory for this project.

KingOfSwords said on Jun. 1, 2012

After defeating the Boogey Tent, my party got stuck in place and couldn’t do anything. And when I beat the Boogey Tent in a clean ROM using the save state, I still got stuck. And this was looking to be an awesome hack…

KingOfSwords said on Jun. 1, 2012

NVM, using the clean ROM then moving so that the tent was offscreen fixed the problem. It probably had something to do with the sizes of the sprites.

But now I’m in Saturn Valley, at the hot spring, and I can’t go down the ladder because a guy in a car replaced the Saturn at the bottom of the ladder, and if I go back through Belch’s Factory, I won’t be able to go into the factory again, and I won’t be able to get to Milky Well, so unless I go into Milky Well right now, without any preparatory grinding, I can’t complete the game, and the enemies in the Milky Well dungeon are hard. /rant

Strontium said on Jun. 2, 2012

The changed item names can mess up your inventory when they go over a character limit. I got some of Jeff’s equipment pushed over to Ness when Jeff’s stuff got overfilled by the Flawless HP-Sucker.

KingOfSwords said on Jun. 3, 2012

^Adding to that, sometimes the names of items will get pushed up a space in the inventory, so that you can’t see what the first 2 items are, and the last 2 can’t be used until the glitch is fixed. Don’t know the cause.

Also I actually got an account. Woo.

Pinwheel said on Jun. 7, 2012

Does the earthbound reshuffler delete a normal earthbound rom with the randomized hack? This looks really fun but I’m scared it will delete my normal earthbound rom! 🙁

Poe said on Jun. 7, 2012

It doesn’t delete the original ROM, no. And it’ll never delete any of your new reshuffled hacks, either! 🙂

Pinwheel said on Jun. 8, 2012

Phew!Now I can download it!
