Tips for Buying EarthBound

April 5th, 2012 | Audio Stuff, MOTHER 1, Videos

To Mato,

There’s a creative phenomenon on Japanese video-sharing website Nico Nico Douga called “MIDI Animation”. It involves using a program that can graphically represent the contents of a MIDI file to display images and visuals within the music. These animations often involve songs from Japanese popular culture and video games.

One popular MIDI Animation contains a medley of songs from several Nintendo games. Among these songs is the Eight Melodies from Mother. The animation cleverly uses the notes of the songs to spell out the word “MOTHER” and displays a picture of Mr. Saturn, without sounding out of tune. It starts at 2:15.

I tried finding other examples of Mother MIDI Animations on Nico Nico Douga, but I couldn’t find any.

But on a side note, there are a lot of great Mother remixes available on Nico Nico Douga, and fans of Mother music should consider searching there, as well.

That’s pretty cool! It reminds me of some MP3 I used to have that had Giygas’s face hidden in the song’s waveform dot matrix warp core field stabilizers*. In a strange way this MIDI animation reminds me of Mario Paint stuff too.

*probably not the correct term

Great find! Lots of fun to hear each song come in and then to see how they incorporated an image from the source games into the MIDI visually.

That’s really cool – I loved the Zelda stuff at the beginning.

The Fire Emblem theme was a really pleasant surprise.

The Giygas music you’re talking about is found in a track named “The Might of Four”. At around two minutes, you can see Giygas if you use a 3D Spectrum visualization (in other words, a visualization that has a vertical line sweeping across the screen, and the line is drawing the current sound intensities from bass at the bottom to treble at the top). I think I stumbled upon this on accident when I was bored and just playing music with that visualization playing full screen. Was a bit creepy to see…

I do not recall where I got the mp3 from. I think it might have been on this website somewhere though…

Very cute! That part would do great in Mutant Mudds!! Anyone agree?

I loved every part. Even the MOTHER and Zelda part.

Sweet, I ought to see that!
Also, I recall they did he Giygas Spectrogram thing in the FIAB song “I… Feel… G…a…b…b…e…r…” but that might not be the one you were thinking of…

Neato! doesn’t that mushroom thing at the end look like the doorknob from MOTHER 3?

 That’s pretty sweet. It was sweet how they can make the notes after the mascot of the game!

That was epic!

That might be one of the best renditions of the Fire Emblem theme I’ve ever heard; shame it’s just a brief snippet. Normally that sort of disappointment is reserved for practically any medley which invokes Pollyanna.

Pikmin was unexpected
