Tips for Buying EarthBound

March 28th, 2012 | EarthBound, Videos

Here’s an old video by Plo that I had totally forgotten about until now!

What I like about this video is seeing how ridiculous some of this stuff would actually look in real life – hitting trees with bats and stuff like that 😛

There’s actually a story behind this video too!

Many years ago, when the Starmen.Net staff had first heard about EarthBound being prepped for a Virtual Console release, we were like, “Oh man, we gotta promote this big when it hits!” I think I had a plan to do a special EBFGP (and even formatted the pages to look decent on the Wii browser, heh), and I remember that Plo put together this goofy video to promote the game on Virtual Console when it was released. All with the idea that if it sold well, Nintendo would finally be convinced that the series DOES have profitability outside of Japan.

Anyway, that all fell through for reasons already explained, but Plo later repurposed the above video to promote a poll in Nintendo Power. Not like it was too necessary, though 😛

It’s weird, I completely forgot about all this stuff until now, I wonder what other old stuff’s lying around in my head that I can talk about someday!

Except now his video powers are even more powerful!

Why don’t we start a petition to get Earthbound on VC? I think Nintendo would be more responsible. I mean it’s not like other games on virtual console have questionable copyright infringement? The game could be the swan song for the VC, I think that is something we’d be willing to shell out 8 dollars for.

I didn’t realize until now how appropriate a dead end sign would be as the sign you fight.

Of course, Nintendo would probably censor that somehow. Maybe to a yield sign or something ridiculous, but actually still kind of fitting, in that way they do.

The way I see this all finally being resolved is one of us becomes a celebrity with endless money and powerful influence. We ask to be put in contact with, say, the chief financial officer at Nintendo of America, and we propose to simply write the company a check for some very large number of dollars to fund the re-release of EarthBound (and maybe a localized Mother 3). My guess is that they just know that they wouldn’t profit, especially if the copyright and licensing theories are correct. Nobody at Nintendo is going to drop a substantial sum of their own cash for the sole purpose of releasing some niche game(s), but one of us might be that crazy one day.

Yeah, I remember watching this video when it was first released, and for some bizarre reason I thought that “Runaway Dog” barking at 0:58 was the funniest freakin’ thing I had ever seen. Of course, I watched it again just now and couldn’t but break into a fit of suppressed giggles when that part popped up. I think I may have problems.

^Ah. “…couldn’t HELP but break into…” was what I meant.

@nesstron: I think I saw a groucho looking enemy in one of the Kid Icarus preview videos. Made me think of Earthbound 0.

I just signed the petitions on all of the sites you listed. I think we should go beyond the petition, a pledge drive. Kinda like the kickstarter thing doublefine just did. We could show Nintendo how much money they really are missing out on. With a petition it’s hard to gage how many people will actually buy earthbound on VC. With a pledge you will know exactly how many people will buy it.

Yo mato, just telling you if you haven’t played Kid Icarus uprising yet, in the multiplayer, one of the computer names is Ness.

EVERY time I remember all the torment NOA put MOTHER fans through I get PO’d.

With that said, there’s it that rumored new Smash Bros. Game for the 3DS and WIIu. With Brawl, the amount of MOTHER related things took a step up from Melee. And Melee from the N64 one.

Will the NEXT smash have even more MOTHER nods?

Or has NOA finally put it’s foot down?

Hmm, if EB does get released in Wii U VC, can we use Plo’s video this time?

There needs to be a 2013 version now!
