A wave of e-mails suddenly came in this morning, talking about a display at the Nintendo World Store. Here’s one from Felipe:
Hey Mato!
This news was posted on GoNintendo a few hours ago, and I think it would be important to share it with you. The Earthbound Cartridge, Mother 3 and other merchandise are on display at a cabinet in Nintendo World Store in NY. Ironic, huh? Here follows the link: http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=172373
The pic in question is here:

And you can check out the full gallery here.
Before anyone gets up in arms or anything, here’s a comment from that article:
I am truly sorry to those of you who missed the inclusion of games like Mother 3 and the Fire Emblem Series. This display is designed to show fan appreciation for some series that do not get enough public acknowledgment. Most of the members of Nintendo World’s staff are attempting to write their love letter to the fans of these series. Most are just as upset as you that Duster will never feel the lash of Wess’ tongue in English, or that we will never play through the second half of Marth’s story without the help of a printed translation by our side. Take their inclusion as a glimmer of hope, not a slap in the face.
Those little sprite figures of some of the EarthBound/MOTHER 3 characters seem to be handmade. I wonder who made them and where they came from.
At any rate, it’s great to see fans keeping the series alive in little ways like this 🙂

I love how the copy of EarthBound used here is boxless; truly a sign of the state of trying to get copies of it. 😛
On a tangentially related note, I’m rather curious as to what that massive crimson Thracia 776-marked box is in the Fire Emblem display; Thracia 776 definitely didn’t come in a box that either looked like that or was of that size, nor can I think of any merch for it that would require a box like that. That said, it is a really pretty box.
Also, you know what may be a nice extension of this display? If they set up the respective consoles for each and allowed visitors to spend some time games upon request (and under observation from staff for obvious reasons). At the very least, surely they’ve got some of those old display-model play/security stands for older Nintendo handhelds left over somewhere.
I can’t say I’m shocked the staff would do that. I was there during a trip to New York last July, my EB shirt got compliments from at least four different employees.

The NWS employees are really cool, they often make these displays with swag from their own personal collections.
They contacted us about the possibility of including some Fangamer merch, but the suits eventually decided they didn’t want to seem like they were advertising for an unofficial merch store.
I’m pretty sure the pins lying on the shelf are ours, though!
Well, at least they acknowledge the series existence, something they don’t always do….
@Chistian. That is the Mother 1+2 CD not the game. They have the Mother 1 CD also its the first disc on the left. I’m jealous of the MOTHER 3+ Mr saturn strap.
@dosei-san I know it was the CD of Mother 1+2, but I didn’t notice that Mother 1 CD was up I thought it was Mother 2. Sorry.
I had no idea this place even existed in NY! I’m going to go check it out sometime! 🙂

Way cool! Nintendo World need not worry. This was no slap in the face.
Mother 3… FE Heroes of Light & Shadow. The two games I want to come over sea’s the most. At least they’re getting some love. 😀

I was in NY when I was younger and I NEVER saw this…
Something tells me that Nintendo might be presenting for fun… or just mocking us in our face…
Wow! I was there just a week ago. I can’t believe that I missed this.
However, while I was there, I noticed that one of the songs the store was playing in the background was the theme of Twoson from EarthBound. Sounds like the Nintendo World Star has a lot of Mother fans!
Wow. That’s really nice. It’s great to see that at least the series is remembered.
A “glimmer of hope”, huh? Definitely a faint one, but still, I wonder how far it might go…
I’d love to visit that store some time, but that’d be difficult to arrange as I live basically on the other side of the country. I have family in New York State, though, so it’s still a possibility.
That poor earthbound cart… it look’s so lonely! It’s all by itself. :'(
The most amusing thing to me about that picture is actually the Kirby series stuff at the bottom. Notice how many games are missing (the GBA games, the SNES games, most of the GB/SGB games, etc) yet they seem to have tons of plushies of Kirby and other figures of Kirby and cast. 🙂
At least the series is getting Some recognition.
Also, “the second half of Marth’s story”? What about Roy’s story? We only know of him because of Melee and we all ready know of his father’s story. What about him?
I just noticed they’re missing F-Zero Climax in that display (GBA, Japan-only). They’re also missing quite a few Kirby games but Kirby arguably has enough games to fill the entire shelf.
I’m going there in a couple weeks, maybe I’ll get to see this display up close!
I’m kind of expecting someone to smash this casing pretty soon and nab all the Mother stuff.
Not all hope is lost! I thinks its neat that even if Nintendo themselves don’t talk about or acknowledge Mother/Earthbound their employees do

Psh, and who says NOA doesn’t like the Mother series >.>
Plot-twist! That MOTHER 3 cart is actually the only NTSC official english version cart ever made! Someone smash the case to “rescue” it! 😛
Very cool!!
lostaname: Yeah lol, I’m kind of imagining a Mission Impossible style scene.
Love the staff at Nintendo World. <3 I'm not surprised to see them putting awesome games like this on display. Last time I was there, I was so delighted to hear a collection of my favorite SNES RPG music over the loudspeaker. I squealed a bit with joy and the guy smiled and said that it was from his own music collection. 😀
This is wonderful and I will have to get to New York city at some point to see it. Last time my girlfriend and I were at Nintendo World, we heard the Skyrunner theme playing over the store’s speaker system. Even if the we’ll never get more EarthBound/ Mother in the United States, it’s still good to see it getting some acknowedgement.
This definitely wasn’t a slap in the face. I really liked all of the displays (especially the Kirby, Mother, and Pokemon ones)!
i am amazed that they would give up their own pieces from collection, but it feels incomplete without mother 1. still i can’t wait to see this, if i get to go to new work. And that rare dedede plush, and all the f-zero stuff is nice. Kinda of a ” well we can’t make new ones, but heres some appreciation to all you fans”. I say, this is awesome
When I went to the store I saw the case, but later I heard the earthbound 64 trailer theme at one point. which is nice, since the only other songs they usually play were mario and zelda
Has anyone not noticed that the clay models for Ness and Paula are the japanese ones?
D’aww that is kinda cool.
