Tips for Buying EarthBound

February 13th, 2012 | EarthBound, Interviews, Uncommon Knowledge

Chewy’s translated an interesting interview with two of the main programmers for MOTHER 2/Earthbound, Satoru Iwata and Kouji Malta. It was printed in Famitsu back in 1994, and you can check it out here!

Here’s a tidbit:

— What specific parts gave you a hard time?

Malta I’d say the delivery man.

Iwata There’s a special system for a delivery man in the game. One comes to bring you items you weren’t able to carry before, and one is a pizza delivery man. This is something that has to reach the player at any stage in the game. It was a really reckless idea—the delivery man can’t just pass through walls that the player can’t walk through, so we had to make him able to navigate the map for himself.

In fact, that’s something we took a look at some months ago: EarthBound’s Delivery System

Thats a strange magazine cover.

“Just like the previous game, people were really excited about the freedom in the game post-ending. Did you pay a lot of attention to that part?”

Am I the only one confused by this question (or am I just interpreting this incorrectly)? MOTHER 1 had no post-ending “freedom,” so what is this referring to?

Interesting to think about though….

I don’t remember off the top of my head, but I think it was meant more as a development question, commenting about how after making the main stuff in both games they had fun and added a few little things to the game for fun which players liked. I might be remembering wrong, though.

For the people who don’t know: the Satoru Iwata mentioned in this article is the president of Nintendo Corporation Limited.

He’s also called Itoi in to interview Shigeru Miyamoto about Mario, and I think he worked on Kirby and Smash Bros.

Ahh, that makes sense, must have mistranslated it. I’ll go back and fix that part after I get home from work tonight.
