Up until a few years ago, and even after creating PK Hack and other stuff, I never knew or realized that the UFO enemies in EarthBound are unusual in the way they drop items. Unlike regular enemies, they don’t have just one item they sometimes drop – they drop a whole assortment of stuff!
Here’s the deal:
If a Cute Li’l UFO or Beautiful UFO is present in battle and no item would be dropped otherwise, an item is randomly chosen from a list of 7. This item will always drop. If both enemies are present, the Beautiful UFO drops an item. This obviously doesn’t matter, since those two enemies will never appear in the same region.
Cute Li’l UFO:
- Cookie
- Bag of fries
- Hamburger
- Boiled egg
- Fresh Egg
- Picnic lunch
- Pizza
Beautiful UFO:
- Can of fruit juice
- Royal iced tea
- Protein drink
- Kraken soup
- Bottle of water
- Cold remedy
- Vial of serum
Try it out for yourself! Maybe even make a challenge out of it the next time you play – try to get all 14 special drops from these enemies. It should be a lot easier than the 1/128 item challenge at least 😛

man: I don’t have the time to double-check myself, but it says in the post:
If a Cute Li’l UFO or Beautiful UFO is present in battle and no item would be dropped otherwise
So if I recall correctly, they’ll always drop something if they’re in a battle, unless another enemy in battle is picked to drop an item first.
I figured this out for the first time while making a PowerPoint guide to the enemies in EarthBound. And you’d be correct, Tomato. They always drop an item if the game selects them to drop one when the battle starts.
I have amazing luck getting the rare drops for some reason. Last time I played I got the sword of kings first try and the rest of them couldn’t have taken more then an hour.
It’s interesting how the Cute Li’l UFO drops edible-type food items, and the Beautiful UFO drops drinkable-type food items.
Also, the dropped items are all in sequential order on the item list. Cookie through Pizza are numbers 58-5F, and Can of fruit juice through Vial of serum are numbers 6A-70. The only exception is that Pasta di Summers is skipped, which would normally fall between Picnic lunch and Pizza.
This is what I love about EarthBound. It’s closing in on 20 years old and there’s always something to learn.
The real question here is, Why the heck do alien spacecraft drop food, water and medicine? I gotta get a net and catch one of those things so I can farm its loot 😛
I guess this is a play on the UFO catcher arcade games?
Seeing as how you can get multiple items from these UFOs and at the arcade, it makes sense to me.
@cre’lus dumb theory time: their primary directive being reconnaisance, they also had a secondary mission of collecting a wide variety of specimen samples for reasearch purposes, similar in function to the kidnapping of humans en masse by the starmen
acquiring the kraken soup may have even provided a dna template for them to genetically engineer krakens from scratch and “reconstruct” them by modifying them with bionic technology to boost their combat efficiency
this process could have given a certain someone a great deal of inspiration……hmmmmm

Challenge accepted. Well, as soon as I’m on a break from school.
Wait, so do they always drop items or is there a chance like with all the other enemies?
