Tips for Buying EarthBound

January 19th, 2012 | EarthBound, Videos

yp95 sent me a link to this interesting review of EarthBound:

He references another video of his, which you can see here:

The troll-o-meter is definitely off the charts, but then again you never know…

For what it’s worth, I think EarthBound has many flaws and it probably isn’t even my favorite game of all time – and I assume that’s probably the same for most folks here. Is that the case for you, the person behind the keyboard?

Bionic said on Jan. 19, 2012

TL;DW. Hahaha. Actually Earthbound IS my favorite game, after playing it for all of these years I never even get close to tired of it. 🙂

I get really annoyed whenever people cite the “terrible graphics” as a down point of the game. First of all, I like the graphics because I think they’re really adorable and because they make an obvious point: you’re playing the game through the eyes of a child, and children see the world in a very simplistic, basic, and colorful manner. There’s a reason why the graphics aren’t sophisticated and it has a specific purpose.

Also, Earthbound was the first RPG to take place in an everyday, current setting as opposed to medieval times or outer space. The simplified and pixelized graphics make a postmodern “meta” statement about what “real” life is. There have been so many artists at the MoMa in New York over the past few years who have taken disturbing or life-altering events (such as fighting in a war or having a baby) and made installation games in the style of Earthbound’s graphics (or even Atari’s) as a nod to retro culture and a commentary of how technology dehumanizes our society and how people value or perceive the world around them.

Anyway, that was long winded, but suffice it to say I think Earthbound’s purposefully low-tech graphics were way ahead of their time, to the point where contemporary artists are only now starting to do what he already did years ago.

For me Earthbound is an experience and my 2nd favorite game of all time, my 1st is Mother 3 which takes out all the flaws Earthbound had. As for this video meh another troll pay him not time.

Why people even feel the need to troll the game’s fans like this is beyond me.

Anonymous said on Jan. 19, 2012

Probably a troll. In my opinion, EarthBound is great but is surpassed in every way by its sequel.
And the fanbase is absolutely insane. Not quite Sonic, Nomura Final Fantasy, or Kingdom Hearts tier, but pretty close.

Blueflower999 said on Jan. 19, 2012

Troll alert. EarthBound is definitely the 2nd best RPG of all time, in my opinion of course, being beaten only by Mother 3. Graphics don’t matter. And if you look at the sprite detail for Mother 3, they’re freaking amazing. Dude, find something better to do with your time than to spew trash about a great game.

I watched this video til around the seven-minute mark, but I couldn’t make it any further. The sound of this guy’s voice and the sloooow way he was speaking made for a dreadful viewing experience.

Aside from that, his arguments were pretty weak. “Because you can sometimes avoid going into actual battle with weaker enemies, I give gameplay a 0/10…eh maybe a 1/10.” …what? This isn’t even valid until later on – I’m pretty sure you’d have to grind quite a bit in Onett for this to start to happen, because the enemies won’t be running from you til you beat the Titantic Ant (or maybe even the cops). Most people enjoy Earthbound even more because of this anyway, as fighting weak enemies in other games gets tedious.

And then the fact that you learn a healing spell is also a con? I don’t get it. It’s not like you can use it an unlimited amount of times. If you want to challenge yourself, never use it all; how about that?

Well, as you said, the trolling was pretty evident. There are some cons to Earthbound, and I would probably agree with you that it’s not my absolute favorite game, but I love it dearly. It’s definitely in my top five. And it goes without saying that the online community for Earthbound is amazing; it definitely adds to my enjoyment of the game itself.

“Asperger’s” is a troll’s catch-phrase. Once you hear that word, you know you are not dealing with a realistic, level-minded individual. Anytime you hear that word you know you are dealing with a troll.

The constant 0 scores show he isn’t taking this seriously at all. His entire demeanor during the video is childish at best.

You must also remember that when discussing entertainment (especially music and video games) you are going to have exactly what we have here, an individual who is DETERMINED to hate the game regardless of its content. Being popular really increases the chances of this happening with a given content. In fact, I bet he is even trying to convince himself that he hates the game more than he does. He even says at the end of the first video that he believes the “fetus theory” because it makes it “easier to hate this game”. Really, just a troll camped out under a bridge hoping a few of you billy goats don’t know the drill.

EB is MY favorite game, but that has to do more with the memories I have playing the game, the amount of times that I have played it in my life, and the specific time of my life that EarthBound was introduced.

Dunjinman said on Jan. 19, 2012

Do people on the Internet gain enjoyment from slamming others and swearing a lot? It’s not exactly a generator of warm and fuzzy feelings. Wanting to hate something usually breeds more hate of everything, but liking something usually breeds happiness. Well, haters are going to hate. Because I’m sure with standards like his, he’s not going to enjoy anything.

I’m mostly offended by his suggestion that people with Asperger’s Syndrome don’t understand others feelings. We do. I’m even more offended if that’s considered a good excuse to be mean to others. It’s not.

This guy is a definite troll. I had an argument with him earlier. He gave Super Mario World a 2/10 (but then later gave it 0/10). People complained and he went into ‘I am the ultimate, you cannot refute anything I say’ mode.

Eclebright said on Jan. 19, 2012

Earthbound is my favorite RPG. And that’s saying alot when I’ve played alot of the greats. It saddens me when my generation, or even people 3 years younger than me don’t ever experience the same nostalgia I had growing up through games, and I’m only 18. When I realize that “gaming” in today’s eyes is how many people you can kill within a 4 minute time frame, it angers me that the people with heart to play the story telling journeys aren’t even considered sane.

Where’s the Mario jumpers? Where’s the Dragon Questers? Where’s the Metroid trekers? Surely, gaming can’t end where it is now. 0/10 my foot buddy.

JeffShotFirst said on Jan. 19, 2012

EarthBound may not be game #1 of all time (depending on when you ask me). However, I keep coming back to this quirky little RPG at least 1-2 times per year. I cannot say that about any other game in my vast collection. There are experiences in this game that have brought together an awesome group of friends over the years. That alone should serve as evidence towards the value of this great game.

What would you say your favorite game is, Mato? I know it’s a hard question. I myself don’t have any single favorite game, I love so many of them! But I do consider Earthbound a “perfect” game, as I believe that there are different “degrees” of perfection if you will.

Bucky said on Jan. 19, 2012

The least he could do is research the game a little. He knows nothing about it. Instead, his bias lies within his immature, ignorant notions of what videogames should be. It’s fine to post an opinion, and even fine to attack a game to an extent, but to give an opinion on Earthbound without knowing anything is like an atheist trying to shame the Bible without reading it, or a politician voting on a bill without… Oops.

MostStrange said on Jan. 19, 2012

Also- “A fact about how the game works”

Fact: You *cannot* beat the game if you just keep attacking without any strategy. It’s not an easy game. It’s not super challenging, but it’s not easy. Mother 3 was easy, and I actually found it all the more interesting for it.

Angi said on Jan. 19, 2012

This guy is definately a troll. I can’t stand people who say like the shooter season 2011, or something like that.

To me, Earthbound is pretty much what I want in an RPG these days. It’s simple enough to pick up and play without fifty pages of text, it’s colourful and has a nice story, and the enemies thing is a blessing – you don’t have to grind if you don’t want to. The Zelda series comes close, but that’s because of the series weight and glorified storyline and my childhood memories.

God thanks to today’s generation I judge how mature they are by asking one question, do you play cod or (insert other game here). The worst effing part! I am 16!!!! The main demographic for cod despite all the bloody 12 year olds spouting homophobic insults and racial slurs.

As someone who actually HAS Asperger’s, I can tell you that I can and will accept differences in opinion. I’m the only person in my house who likes EarthBound.
EarthBound along with Mother 3 is definitely in my top 10 list of favorite games. I want to say EarthBound would be at the top, though I must say I’m liking Final Fantasy XIII (it’s my first time playing through) and I also enjoy Donkey Kong Country 2 and Yoshi’s Island.

1. He be trolling

2. As Mr. Behind the keyboard, I can honestly say that it isn’t my favorite game. However I find that it is the most fun to openly bring up in conversations with 3 or more people, when at least one other person involved knows about the game, everyone else just looks confused and stares while I wink back to whoever got the reference. It’s so high on my list because it has both game quality and social value to me as well, though I know this doesn’t apply to too many other people.

3. I love this guys voice, he reminds me of a friend from school who sounds and acts a lot like him. I can just see him smiling and laughing to himself as he trolls away.

His videos are funny to watch, but also giving him views is lame. I’ll let these be…

Chewy said on Jan. 20, 2012

Sorry, gotta chime in and give Earthbound/MOTHER 2 some lovin’. Definitely my favorite game of all time. If I were to make a list of my favorite video games, Earthbound would be at the top, and I would love it tons more than even the number two spot.
So maybe it would be a top ten list with Earthbound duplicated in, like, spots one through four. I like it a lot more than MOTHER 1 & 3, too, because it’s so “comfortable”. Playing it is not too difficult, but at the same time not boring, and it’s almost like sitting down to read a good book. A good book with the best music in the universe. And I love that.
Which is why I personally don’t play games like Megaman, for example. I can’t handle stressful games, I get too nervous when they’re so difficult and you’re just in dangerously precarious situations the whole time. I get all worked up and feel physically spent by the end, haha.

Anonymous said on Jan. 20, 2012

Whether due to nostalgia or due to all the positives it has, EarthBound’s definitely my favourite game of all time. It always seems like there’s something new about it. It’s not just a big empty world, there’s all sorts of weird unnecessary things that do nothing except be interesting. I love that. Then there’s the fact that the characters in the game seem like their existence has nothing to do with the player or what they’re doing.

There are only two things I really think of as flaws. One is the early part of the game where you need to grind up to fight Frank Fly: the first time I played the game I gave up for that reason. The other is the turn-based battle system, which is a well-implemented version of something that was never fun to begin with.

Now, dream game time. EarthBound remake, Wind Waker graphics and lighting effects, 3D audio, The Last Story’s battle system (though I hear that was badly implemented so not that part). Voodoo game design keeps the Charlie Brown character design, battle weirdness, and psychodelia despite these changes.

skyrunner14 said on Jan. 20, 2012

After reading the comments here, I’m not even going to watch the videos. There’s no use in giving such an obvious troll any attention whatsoever.

Admittedly though, Earthbound isn’t my favorite game… I actually prefer the original MOTHER on the NES/Famicom. The simple graphics leave much more to the imagination, and as a result I get much more immersed in playing. That, and I don’t mind the grind. I haven’t played Mother 3, so I currently have no opinion of it… yet.

Satsy said on Jan. 20, 2012

It’s obvious it’s a troll…

but it’s more obvious why he did it. It’s no surprise people will antagonise fans of this games when we’re often labelled as ‘rabid’… sometimes with good reason. Namely, when the games are insulted.

I do like the game, I respect that the graphics aren’t smooth like, say, LttP or Harvest Moon, I can see where he’s coming from with the ‘in a cave’ sound effect (which is overused), and I accept the reason I like these games has very little to do with the surface product which doesn’t sell for everyone. His exaggeration was designed to do exactly what it has been doing. Messing wit’ yer heads! 😛

I don’t know if i’d actually classify him as a troll
He’s terrible at it if he is.
I think it’s more of a case where a pour soul was only exposed to games like CoD etc.

In some other videos he compares it to Black Ops.
Mentions are the PS3 graphics are better than the SNES graphic. Not like the systems were released separately.

Also the way he talks about the mediocre (yeah I played a few. nothing special in any of them. I even own Black OPs) call of duty games means he’s strictly a fan boy. His “opinion” doesn’t matter.

He also shows how the combat “is” All he showed was when you’re guaranteed victory in the first turn you dont’ have to sit through it you get an auto-win.
He didn’t even know why it happens. Then he was talking about Black ops battles. How they are so much better. Lets look at reality. If you get killed you respawn with another life. If you get shot in the head you don’t instantly die. If you have a clip unloaded on you you don’t instantly die either.

This guy simply needs to study a little more before doing something like this again. He needs to make it somewhat believable.

I didn’t quite get mad…just depressed at how people are.

Earthbound is definitely a spiritual favorite of mine, largely since like so many other people here it introduced me to tons of people I would never have otherwise known, but there are definitely games I like considerably more. There certainly seems to be something about Earthbound that inspires people in a strange way, though, which you don’t really see in a lot of other games.

Anonymous said on Jan. 20, 2012

People who troll and very much hate Earthbound are First-Person-Shooter bronies who have nothing to do in their spare time but to troll other games.

Fobbies & Saturns said on Jan. 20, 2012

Aaargh, I hate this generation of gamers who can’t appreciate anything other than COD.

Today, someone asked me if I liked Pokemon. I said yes. He was shocked & said he gave it up when he was five. Just goes to show, some gamers can’t appreciate good games anymore.

EarthBound vs. Black Ops? Totally unfair. One was released in 1995, the other was released in 2010. Yeah, they’re going to be different. One’s a cutesy RPG with a cult following, the other’s a violent shooter that people hate for staying the same.

I haven’t played EarthBound enough to put it on my list of favorite games, but I can say it has a high chance of getting on there.

This reviewer/troll deserves a 0/10.

Alright, my rant’s over. Have a nice day.

@Anonymous2, Many people like MOTHER 3 because of the better comunication with the characters. That, and the story is more new, EarthBound’s story compared to the other MOTHER games was kind of “eh,” If you know what I mean. It was the same as MOTHER. ALso, MOTHER 3 seems to have more action in it for those action lovers.

TonyJ said on Jan. 20, 2012

What the heck Mato! EarthBound isn’t your favorite game of all time? What could possibly be then?

Mato said on Jan. 20, 2012

Honestly, I don’t know, it’s too hard to pick just one. It’s definitely right there at the very top, probably tied with a handful of other games.

Before EarthBound, I was equally as fanatic about StarTropics and Final Fantasy IV. I love the Star Ocean games to death too, and although I’m clearly in the minority, 7th Saga hit all the right buttons for me. If I was going to be stuck on a desert island with only one game, I’d probably go with a Disgaea game for sheer amount of stuff to do.

I’m probably forgetting like 50 other awesome games I love, but man it’s hard to pick just one.

Zinco said on Jan. 20, 2012

Well… there were a few things that bothered me about Mother 3 in terms of the plot, like the Hummingbird’s Egg didn’t really seem like it was all that important in the end, and having Leder belch out all of the backstory made it feel like they had to compress an awful lot of plot in a hurry. Seems like it could have been easily enough solved by having the player discover the spaceship on which people first traveled to the Nowhere Islands—I think that could even work as misleading the player into thinking that Giygas was somewhere to be found. But ultimately I feel like Mother 3 had a good story that unfolded clumsily.

Although Mother 2 wasn’t perfect with its story, either—I think a lot of it seems rather vague (the Apple of Enlightenment, the nature of Giygas’s attack from the past (the concept itself doesn’t seem to make much sense), and until Mother 3 happened there wasn’t much of an explanation as to why Porky was able to travel to the past whereas you weren’t. Also having your souls transport to the future was a little hand-wavy. And all that aside, what happened with Ninten and his friends? Why were they replaced by highly similar but canonically different kids?

I guess I’m leaving gameplay out of the equation here—Mother 3 is possibly a bit better in that respect. But one of the things that disappoints me about the Mother series is, despite its great writing, the stories come together more awkwardly than they should.

DJMankiewicz said on Jan. 20, 2012

My favorite game is one from the Zelda series. It’s a toss-up between Majora’s Mask (yes I love that off-beat spinoff), Link’s Awakening (yes I love that off-beat spinoff) and the most recent Skyward Sword. Yeah, the usual suspects aren’t at the very top there, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t amazing to me.

Earthbound is a very well done game. I’d actually say there’s no major flaws, except for one issue that’s hard to ignore. The most annoying aspect of any RPG has to be the “random” element tossed in to various things. In the case of Earthbound, well, the whole “of Kings” line of drops and other such drops of the same rarity. I really don’t think ANY game benefits from that sort of thing. I’d much rather have had a neat quest chain of progressively more difficult side bosses or something to get Poo’s best items.

Bucky said on Jan. 20, 2012

I prefer Earthbound to Mother 3 and Mother. I have only played 3 once, and still working on Mother (As it does get old for me after a while). Earthbound speaks to me more than any other game, and I’m not huge fan of RPGs. Part of it is the graphics, which I’ll never understand why people complain about. Compare the original Pokemon games to EB; those games are timeless, and the memes surrounding them prove that. The other part is the incredible soundtrack.
The gameplay is incredibly fun, and challenging each time. Some games are fun, but they don’t really touch me. I felt a little distance from Mother 3, and I know I would have if it had been released on 64.

Shrooms said on Jan. 21, 2012

But yeah, I always liked Mother 3 more than 2. 2 is extremely memorable but 3 focused more on the story. However, they’re both amazing and while I like 3 more than 2 I think they’re both on the same general level of excellence.

I (obviously) meant that when you hear that term in this context, you know you are dealing with a troll. I think you guys realized I wasn’t tying to insult anybody but those who use the term as an insult. Trolls love it because they think it makes them sound smart while giving them the passive aggressive pseudo-intellectual facade.

@Mato, do you like Star Ocean: Second Story? It is up in there in the Top 3 for me. It is another game I spent loads of time with as a kid. I still play it quite often.

Mato said on Jan. 21, 2012

Yeah, that was my first Star Ocean game and it’s what got me into the series.

Dialga Thunderstar said on Jan. 21, 2012

Trolls. I can’t stand it when they play through the whole game and hate it. You don’t just sit there mashing the a button. You use psi occasionally,or in Paula’s case, a lot. Graphics don’t matter, and the auto-defeat helps. It’s annoying in Pokemon when you keep on running into low-level enemies. Besides, if Earthbound was loaded with graphics I would not enjoy it. I don’t want to see a DOG getting smashed by a baseball bat.

I am a 6th grader. Most of the guys in my grade play call of duty. To me it seems that a bunch of people like war games. They made a big deal about the new cod game that I saw commercials about a cod jeep.

It’s a load of poop.

I think Earthbound would probably count as one of my favorites, although I can’t pick just one. As others mentioned, it’s one of the few games I can still pick up and replay happily to the end. There’s very few games that I can do that with. And it has lines that have stuck with me since I first played it. It has made a positive impact on my life that hasn’t been mirrored by many other games.

“I know Mysterious Man IRL. It’s a joke. He likes all the games he bashes and hates all the games he praises.”

Ok. So what? So he still has nothing better to do than make pointless videos dedicated to trolling and angering other people? Rather than… say, do something legitimately entertaining, or worthwhile online other than pissing people off?

Many he could try something that takes some actual effort and intelligence and talent to put together? Something that actually has some kind of useful merit?

Saying “oh it’s just a joke” doesn’t make anything he’s done or said any more worthwhile, and doesn’t change the fact that he’s lazy, and defaulting to trolling and being the lowest common denominator for a few self-centered giggles at the expense of other people? Anyone can do this. Nothing about makes this any more special or worthwhile. Even if it is a “joke.” If it’s a joke, as you say it is, it’s not a funny one, at all. And i’m pretty sure jokes are supposed to actually contain or produce humor.

Honestly… I really don’t care what the excuse is. It’s still a worthless video and he’s still a worthless bum on Youtube that settles for this crap, because he’s incapable of doing anything more substantial.

Mother 2 is and will always be my all time favorite game in gaming history. Mother is at a close second with Mother 3 tagging along behind it at third. Remember….

No crying until the end.

Laughing at you guys who acknowledge people who make these kinds of videos are “trolling,” and are getting angry because of them anyway

Lothis said on Jan. 22, 2012

While I don’t agree with his point of view on the subjects, his opinions about the graphical style and ambient noises are valid complaints, but you can tell he clearly has no clue about the battle system – he can’t explain what causes instant wins and for some reason thinks that it’s a huge chunk of the game when in a normal playthrough you might get a handful of instant wins over the course of the whole game. Also he complains about the obligatory tutorial boss fight against Starman Jr being too easy, which is just silly.

How vain you are.

Also this guy is like nintendo’s commercial for this game. he only showed onett. if you have to find something bad in this game, go past onett. this game does have flaws from time to time, but one copy is worth a million copys of chrono trigger in my book.

IHatethisguy said on Jan. 23, 2012

That is the first part of the game where it makes you
used to the game then it gets harder worthless peice
of trash, earthbound at least gets an 8/10!

ness64 said on Jan. 23, 2012

It says on this guy’s Twitter account that ‘he eats Nintendrones for breakfast’. He only has 2 followers and his first post says ‘Nintendrones suck’. This guy’s a fail.

ness64 said on Jan. 23, 2012

Whoops, forgot something in my first post :). He says Black Ops deserves a 10/10 and Earthbound deserves a 0/10. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqS76T7Jb0E. Here is the video description: ‘Earthbound – 0/10
Black Ops – 10/10

Black Ops wins! Great job on this amazing piece of art Treyarch! Fine work! Keep it up, I am looking forward to Modern Warfare 3 and will buy 10 copies to cancel out some of the retards who want to hold gaming back by not purchasing a copy.’

If I met this guy, I would punch him in the face and tell him to play the game.

Satsy said on Jan. 23, 2012

You guys are still going on about this? How riled can you get? While it’s clear to see what this guy got out of creating the ‘review’, what exactly do you all get out of crying about it? Go play something. Read a book. Write a book. Put your words, and your attention, to better use.

Guy can do what he wants. But don’t play any further into the awful “this game’s the equivalent of a gaming GOD” hands any more than you already have.

Minifig2401 said on Jan. 23, 2012

LOL he only had 25 subbers. my friends had more than him and he’s only been on youtube for a year. this guy just can’t comprehend how awesome this game is. he probably cheated to get past nighttime onett, because he lost to starman jr.

Emmet "KatanaSwordfish" O. said on Jan. 23, 2012

Clicking that guy’s video was like watching a train wreck. A very slow train wreck. Obviously a troll who is desperate for attention.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Although opinions aren’t really worth a whole lot in the end. I’d much rather watch someone make a compelling argument based on objective qualifications and hard facts instead of spewing their opinions. What it all comes down to is that opinions can be very inwardly focused (Speaking about what I like, what I want, or what I dislike).

Because of that, I’d like to argue that not all opinions are of equal value. Sure, anyone can like or dislike something, but, if someone can back up their opinions with sound logic, reasoning, and proof that they have a deep understanding of the subject matter it’s a lot more interesting to listen to whether you agree or not.

If this guy is a troll or not, that’s something that we can only guess, to be honest. But, either way, it’s pretty clear that he has an opinion that is based solely upon ignorance. Those type of opinions are pretty worthless and uninteresting to listen to.

Being entitled to an opinion, and being qualified to talk about one are two completely different things.

Hey- he’s just trolling. No need to get riled up! I mean, his 0/10 scores are obviously just to irritate fans. It was actually kind of funny, especially the Black Ops video.

Anonymous said on Jan. 24, 2012

Maybe I’m just at the tail end of an old generation, but it seems like a lot of people these days just can’t take a joke or difference of opinion. Everyone’s just a troll trying to get you.

It’s probably because it’s so easy to go to a different web page and find someone who thinks the same way as you.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Everyone’s just getting worked up over his stupid excuses on why the game is terrible (“You win battles automatically, if you don’t just mash A,” Yeah right.) There will always be trolls, some are just harsher than others.

Zombichad said on Jan. 25, 2012

I love Earthbound so much, but I thought this was pretty funny! Haha. I think people need to realize this is a joke. I mean, who SERIOUSLY compares Earthbound to CoD? Trolls. Obviously.

Minifig2401 said on Jan. 25, 2012

I’m glad video game nerd reviewed this and gave it a good review. he’s like the video game nostalgia critic. this guy’s like not that well known, so to most people he doesn’t matter. what will matter is that he may be killed by angry earthbound fans, or retro/nintendo gamers in general. why are we mother fans so crazy?

Anonymous said on Jan. 26, 2012

You guys sound like you don’t understand what satire is. No, it isn’t trolling. Look up The Best Gamers for reference to this type of comedy.

You all got really mad over this and it’s just disgusting.

RadicOmega said on Jan. 26, 2012

@Anonymous, Why can’t you see that some people here are censitive and are offended by this? I can’t belive you keep going on and on about this being hilarious. Clearly you must look at his other reviews. And if this is ment to be a joke he isn’t a good comedian.

Anonymous said on Jan. 28, 2012

After watching this I’m so mad that he gave Earthbound a 0/10. How could you hate this epic game?

Dialga Thunderstar said on Jan. 29, 2012

Ok, I just noticed something. He’s comparing a 1995 game to a modern-times game. That’s not really fair, considering EB is older and they’re 2 way different games. Cod is something he likes. EB is old and he probably never went through the whole thing. They are on 2 different systems. Anyway, I don’t realize the point of putting up a video thats full of critisizing. He’s just critisizing points that have already been brought up by other reviews. The review doesn’t make me very angry now that I’ve realized all the facts.
People of the universe, don’t get mad at this guy. I understand that Eb is amazing, but this is not a serious review. I get it that some of you are mad. But please settle down and look at all the facts. The review is not fair. It’s flawed because it doesn’t point out the later details of the game, or the whole game. It’s just something a very bored person would do. That’s all it is.

PsiPaula4 said on Jan. 31, 2012

If you look at his other videos, you can tell that this guy just seems like he likes to troll Nintendo fans in general, not just EarthBound fans, and compares them to the likes of modern mainstream shooter games. It’s beyond me why he bought a 3DS if he hates Nintendo so much. (See his Super Mario 3D Land review.)

I think that guy truly is a “Mysterious Man.”

Anonymous said on Feb. 1, 2012

Hey guys, this is something we call satire, it’s not the same as trolling. He’s making fun of the mainstream. You may not think it’s not GOOD satire, but it’s not “trolling”. You guys are just making asses of yourselves on the comments of his videos now.

I really hope you lot don’t call other works of satire “trolling”. I hope you don’t make serious remarks such as “A Modest Proposal is a troll book!”.

blan said on Feb. 12, 2012

i think his persistence in aggravating easily baited mother fans is the factor that’s leading to him being labeled a troll, not necessarily the contents of the “review”

although, there are those who cry troll at the sight of the title without bothering to even watch the video, but i believe those are the kind of people your argument would be lost on (not to mention I doubt the vast majority of commenters in this article in particular would even know what A Modest Proposal is)

in any case i think attributing all the comments on his videos to members of this site is a bit assumptive

FlyingManCourage said on Feb. 12, 2012

Sattire requires wit and a point. This guy has neither. I think he’s definitely attempting to be more than a troll than here (and I agree…getting real tired of this term and the general internet attitude toward non-preferred behavior) but he’s failing miserably and has accomplished nothing more than making an awful video in the mold of a common troll.

Most people commenting here are giving this guy way too much credit either way. Troll or satirist, his video is immature, boorish, and deplorable.

Call him what you want, this particular video (the only one that will get 3 seconds of my time) is a complete fail.

GiegueFanboy said on Feb. 12, 2012

Seriously, though, I do respect this guy’s opinion. Not everyone likes the same game. The reason I hate him is because he calls everyone who likes Nintendo a “Gay Nintendrone that’s holding gaming back.” If you are reading this, xXMysteriousmanXx, your opinion is respected, but don’t insult people who like different games than you.

RadicOmega said on Feb. 13, 2012

Agreeing with the comment above mine. Also, on the subject on this guy being a “troll”, I can agree that he was just abusing his opinion on others. The reason why we are offended, is because all of his resons are nit-picky. And plus his argument makes no scence.

The Great Klaid said on Feb. 14, 2012

Wait! I just had an idea. If we have more reviews like this, then the price will finally go down, making the game affordable by everyone again! Look at amazon games that just aren’t any good there all $0.01. So congrats sir, thank you for speaking the truth. Also, Mother 3 doesn’t have Buzz-Buzz or the greatest opening in any game, because of Buzz-Buzz. Although to be honest I’ve played 10min of Mother 3.

rockinomega said on Feb. 14, 2012

First off I have to say that this community is awesome. Its great to see so many fans of the mother series. Personally Earthbound is my favorite game of all time with Mother 3 at a close 2nd. I have done several playthroughs on both games. Great storylines and a sound tracks that are the best music videogames have to offer. This dude is a troll and his opinion shouldn’t be considered at all. He just wants to stir up a cult fan base. CoD is fun to play if you want to take out anger, but if you want to play a game for a true emotional experience EB and Mother 3 is where its at. I haven’t played Mother 1 that much just because I feel bad downloading Roms and taking money away from Itoi’s pocket. EB :10/10
Troll :0/10

j-mac said on Feb. 14, 2012

The battle system is only like that because they didn’t want you wasting time fighting significantly weaker foes that you would possibly obliterate in the first turn anyways. Plus weaker enemies offer very little experience points except for the criminal caterpillar and the other one (I cant remember its name right now.) He says that the angles of the game is scientifically impossible, apparently not because they did it. He goes on to say that the graphics are terrible. Lets see it was made for the snes so graphics aren’t gonna be lifelike. Most new day gamers are so superficial.

Anonymous said on Feb. 14, 2012

This once again proves the Mother fanbase is the easiest and funnest to troll, cause just giving any of the games a negative review sends fans into a frenzy. It’s just like Xbox fanboys and Nintendo

SuperNess said on Sep. 30, 2012

Buzz buzz said he’s not a bee, and he came ten years from the future. Yet Ms. Yp95 wonders how this “bee” knows all this. He also should know the fetus theory is fake, and really, it takes forever to be able to “instakill” enemies. But he does have a point with how the starman Jr. Fight was pointless.

Overall review score 1/10. I gave him an extra point so he wouldn’t be offended.

SuperNess said on Sep. 30, 2012

Sorry, wrong person, not yt95. Super sorry.

SuperNess said on Sep. 30, 2012

And what i don’t get about his second review is, how can he say that? He counsously knows thats not how the battles go but he says thats how they are, and if thats what you should do if a child is standing in front of a fire truck, Im personally worried. (being thirteen and all.)
