Tips for Buying EarthBound

August 28th, 2011 | EarthBound, Videos

So for a long time there’ve been these EarthBound videos by a group called Navgtr. I still have no idea who/what they are or do, some people have told me they’re connected to a cruise line, but that doesn’t seem right at all. So if anyone has more info, let me know.

Anyway, check out this classic EarthBound review they did:

And here’s part 2, which covers how to beat the final boss. The very first line of this video is hilarious too:

I’m sure these videos are old to a lot of old-timers here, but I’m still curious to know what the deal is. These remind me a lot of the gaming press from the 90s that crapped all over EarthBound without ever bothering to understand the game, but surely these are much newer videos?

Well the Gaming in the Clinton Years videos were actually from the 1990s, they just were named that afterwards. Here’s a link about them:

@EarthBoundRules retsupurae

The strangest thing about this awful series is that while it was on local TV stations, it actually managed to build up a fanbase somehow.

Covarr said on Aug. 28, 2011

Eh, this guy’s an idiot. It’s frankly quite difficult to sit through his videos, since they’re so overloaded with bad jokes and misinformation. Even when he is right, he usually misses the point. Heck, he spends most of this “review” listing off random locations in the game.

The Retsupurae videos that cover these things are pretty funny though.

M1997 said on Aug. 28, 2011

Man, this could’ve been better. Here’s my review of HIS review:

1. It comes with a load of hints if we need them? Care to explain in a non-random manner? Shouldn’t you start off a review by actually REVIEWING the game?

2. Easy? I don’t THINK so! Yeah, it’s fun, but easy is a strong word that could mean “done in a few hours.” I would have said, “EarthBound is a simple enough game once you get the hang of it.” Then again, I’m not an idiot.

3. Yes, EarthBound is fun and has comic elements. He really wants us to remember that, Okay?

4. I thought that there were RPGs before this that were in modern times, but not many. I could be wrong about this…

5. Only PIZZA refills our energy? You sure? ‘Cause I’ve had a LOT of fast food in the game that refills my health, but that’s just me.

6. Where’s that video with the guy eating pizza and playing EarthBound from? I’m curious.

7. Okay, okay, OKAY! I get it! There are a LOT of places we can go to! Man, you gotta list ALL of them!?!?

8. Loch Ness Lake… “Loch” means lake, it’s Lake Tess in Earthbound, and… MAN! Did this guy even PLAY EarthBound? He’s worse than the guys who review EarthBound as a BAD game!

9. Umm… care to explain what Saturn Valley IS to the people who don’t know?

10. Who’s Master Belch? Is he the main villain? Why did you mention him? WHAT’S GOING ON!?!?!?!?

11. Battles and HP element seem out of place… what?

12. EarthBound is the first RPG set in modern… WAIT! YOU SAID THIS BEFORE!

13. It makes it good artisticaly, but not technicaly? I found that the game played very well… Again, MY opinion.

14. Oh, Final Fantasy thr- I mean six. Hmm, this might be interesting. Maybe he’s gonna explain how EarthBound came out at around the same time as that game and how it’s just as good story-wise as-
*Video ends*
Earth… Bound….
Why? What was the purpose of showing the end of FF6 instead of EarthBound? If it was just so we could hear him stop talking… well, thank you, that was appreciated.

15. “Earthbound is a slow, sometimes annoying-” *Fires missle*

16. Gee-gus… GUY-GAS, okay! I thought that we settled on Guy-gas! Or Gee-yig, if you’re a Japanese RPG purist.

17. If the E is sigma, then why’d you say E? Dolt.

18. Spell? Did he say SPELL? No, wait, lemme ask a different question: DID HE PLAY EARTHBOUND!?

19. Intergalactic spirit of some sort… Yeah, how do you come to that assumption?

20. He didn’t research to find out that it’s NINE prayers? … I just… I can’t grasp the true power of that stupidity…

21. Care to explain why they have robot bodies? Man, this guy… he’s un-STINKING-believable!

22. Yeah, the soul thing doesn’t make perfect sense, but a modern-day philosopher I am not. Stop complaining and play EarthBound.

23. PSI Telepor- AH, WHO CARES! WHO!? This guy has NOT played EarthBound! No! He hasn’t! There was only ONE good thing about this review, and that he pronounced Onett right! Well, there about…

24. I stopped watching at the credits. Yeah, after he mentioned the Photo-man, I lost it. Really, I did. Watch the rest at the risk of your soul. I can’t watch the rest. If you survive this “review”, then God bless you for not going mad. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to cry…

I hope this was from a VERY long time ago…

Navgtr is one person, i believe. Might be a group. They create fake reviews as they would have been around the time of “the Clinton years”. They claim that they take actual content from reviews at the time, but that claim has been discredited a bunch of times before and they never source these alleged reviews.
The sad part is that navgtr refuses to address the critique given to them. So i think it’s pretty safe to say that they’re just bullshitting everyone.

This guy made a good video, pointing out navgtr’s stupidity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml0FItbRyV8

BOX said on Aug. 28, 2011

Man, the way that guy speaks just makes my ears cringe. I only watched part of video 2, but it seems he doesn’t know what a sentence stop should sound like (“down” instead of “up” in pitch).

Halloween said on Aug. 28, 2011

LOL this guy is having some fun

SeanPeden said on Aug. 28, 2011

Navgtr reviews are notoriously terrible. He crapped all over Final Fantasy VII too, infamously. That one is equally infuriating.

Karadom said on Aug. 28, 2011

Hey guys, did you know that EarthBound is set in modern times?

Sadsa said on Aug. 29, 2011

well at least he got to the endings compared to the other idiotes 😛

Zeph101 said on Aug. 29, 2011

Well I think it’s safe to assume that the comments to this post have sufficiently answered Mato’s question of ‘what the deal is’.

I love finding out about things like this. Insanity is timeless.

Poe said on Aug. 29, 2011

Watched the video Jojo posted and saw pieces of Navgtr’s “review” of Symphony of the Night. They’re definitely trollin’ us. Nobody can be that stupid.

Anonymous said on Aug. 29, 2011

…Am I the only one who thinks he’s not terrible? I mean, most people who comment on video games are pretty annoying, so I don’t think he any worse.

People are allowed to think different things about video games. Even video games we like. I don’t think EarthBound is “slow”, but others might. I like the battles, but I can see how others might find them in the way of exploring and talking to people.

As for the graphics being good “artistically but not technically”, I think that’s right on the money. EarthBound never looked bad, and it still looks pretty fine now, but look at some of the other games of the time.

At the point that this game was released in America, Nintendo was making SNES games with special chips to use 3D effects. Donkey Kong Country was using pre-rendered graphics, the same technology being used in films of the time if I recall. In Japan, Dragon Quest VI had gone on to the same detailed graphics as Final Fantasy was pulling off at the time, why? Because fans chewed out Dragon Quest V three years earlier for looking like an NES game.

…Then again, I didn’t bother sitting through the second video so maybe it turns hilarious.

Tansunn said on Aug. 29, 2011

When I click on the link to this article in Firefox, it redirects to the M2EB Intro/Credits page. Same with the TL;DR M2EB page. I got here using Safari, though.

Anyway, there’s definitely something wrong with this guy. I’ve seen some of his other “reviews” through Retsupurae and they’re utterly ridiculous.

Plus, the way he holds the controller when demonstrating the one-handed play technique isn’t even right. He’s using his thumb to hit the face buttons which defeats the whole purpose of having access to everything with the L and Select buttons.

And what’s with utterly spoiling the ending?

LakituAl said on Aug. 29, 2011

Guy says “Geeh-gus” = I close window. It’s guys like these that make me lose any interest on review videos, you can hardly notice who’s trolling and who’s doing it honestly!

Anonymous said on Aug. 29, 2011

I don’t remember EarthBound ever explaining what the correct pronounciation was, either. I used to say “Gii-gus”, then later I said “Guy-gus” because that’s what my brother said.

Poe said on Aug. 29, 2011

I don’t want to see this turn into a pronunciation debate/discussion, but here’s what Mato said about Giygas’ name on the M2EB page:

“If the English name is supposed to be anything like the Japanese name, the first syllable of ‘Giygas’ is probably supposed to sound like ‘Gee’ rather than ‘Guy’.”

‘Course you’re still free to pronounce Giygas’ name however you like, but Navgtr actually got that part correct.

Typical 90s videos with an “entertaining review” and a ton of “tips” (more really a walkthrough for some parts), what’s the problem? I like it for what it is.
The How To Beat Home Video Games videos of the Atari days were like super serious science films against the incoherent mess of bad puns and radical, dude! that followed.

Pat Young said on Aug. 29, 2011

Navgtr is the ‘National Academy of Video Game Testers and Reviewers. They claim to be the ‘official source on video game reviews,’ but they’re generally distrusted. They made this video in the 1990s.

anon said on Aug. 29, 2011

It’s a rather stupid review, yeah. And I agree that he’s repetitive and a bit of an idiot. But when it comes to things like prononciation of pseudo-Japanese/English words, it’s really your own choice. I say “Gee-gus”, but I still respect those who say “Guy-gus”. Please don’t judge people by their prononciation of words that don’t have an official prononciation.

SomeUser said on Aug. 29, 2011

I love how he hints at being able to play Mega Man X if you wait at the end long enough.

Name said on Aug. 29, 2011

We don’t dislike him because he bad-mouthed EB (he doesn’t really “bad-mouth” it as much as other reviewers), we think (well, *I* think, anyways) he’s terrible because:
-He repeats information over and over again (“Earthbound is an easy game/set in modern times”)
-He gives completely useless/obvious information (why do we need to know about how we can eat pizza and play the game at the same time?)
-He either doesn’t go over what GOOD reviews usually cover (i.e. plot, music/sound, ect.)or covers it very briefly with little to no explanation. (This also leads to point 2: useless information)
-The way he reads off all the places you can visit in a list sounds so unprofessional and uninteresting. Not to mention he mentions so many useless places. A clubhouse? A burger shop? It’s OK to mention that you visit towns, cities, deserts and even Stonehenge, but for God’s sake don’t just list every area in the game.
-I often feel like his reviews are more walkthru-ish than… well… review-ish. And while that really doesn’t show with this review in particular, it really, REALLY shows in his other reviews
-…what was the point of ending on footage of Final Fantasy? It’d be one thing if he had brought it up, but the fact of the matter is he never even mentioned it in the entire “review”, nor did he even compare EarthBound to it, so why show footage of a completely unrelated game?
(A lot of this stuff was already mentioned by M1997, so you can see his post for more “issues”)

…I could go on and on. tl;dr His “reviews” aren’t that good. If you like them, then great, it’s your opinion, but… he’s just not that good of a reviewer, if you want to even call him that. (oh, excuse me, if you want to call *THEM* that. Gotta remember navigtr is more than 1 person, despite all the reviews being written in similar style and rated similarly.)

Karadom said on Aug. 29, 2011

Oh man.. In his FF6 review(..?) here is an actual sentence from it: “Kefka is a character.” Really? I didn’t know, Sherlock!

@Deraj626 You mean Final Fantasy 6? It’s a video game by the way 🙂

KingMike said on Aug. 30, 2011

Navigatr: “If you don’t buy Donkey Kong Country, you’re a moron!”
Navigatr didn’t like that FF7 had too much gameplay, interrupting the cutscenes.
He also found Symphony of the Night disappointingly enjoyable.

Calvin J said on Sep. 2, 2011

Here’s the bottom line, courtesy of TV Tropes:

“In the mid-1990s, a man named George Wood created a TV show dedicated to video games on a Maryland public-access channel, called Flights of Fantasy, much to the uproar of the gaming community. The show gained quite a few detractors; Wood was not known for his playing skills, research or good taste, and the production was rather cheap. He would also tend to go off-topic, sometimes markedly so, in a very fervent manner.

It had a small following, being a local public-access show, but would have been lost forever, had Wood not joined a video gaming association called NAViGaTR (The National Assoiation of Video Game Testers and Reviewers), who archived the entire series, edited each episode and put it onto YouTube as renamed Gaming in the Clinton Years, This is how most people know of Wood.”

RandomGuardian said on Sep. 2, 2011

Why would they do that though? For cheep bucks? For teh lolz?

Anonymous said on Sep. 2, 2011

It isn’t some heinous crime, he was probably just paid to host a gaming show and wasn’t very good at it. The bad reviews like EarthBound weren’t spectacular, there weren’t very many high-quality video game reviewers around at the time anyway. It’s the crazy things like “they should make a racing game where you have to drive your pregnant wife to the hospital while staying under the speed limit to avoid getting arrested” which people should notice.

Me said on Sep. 3, 2011

@Me That would be a pretty cool idea.

EnnuiKing said on Sep. 3, 2011

He says “Nintendo doesn’t want you to give up on the game”, which I find rather ironic today considering EarthBound’s lack of a VC release and the other games in the series remaining Japan-only.
