Tips for Buying EarthBound

July 27th, 2011 | EarthBound, Images, Polls

A little while ago Nintendo Power ran an online poll, and the results have been published in the latest issue. The issue also commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Super NES (my god 20 years already???) so there’s a big article that covers a lot of the big Super NES games, EarthBound included.

EarthBound’s ranking in the poll isn’t surprising, the game pretty much dominated all the previous Virtual Console polls, as you can see here.

Many thanks to The Great Morgil for the scans and the info!

I’m impressed that they capitalized the “B” in the middle 🙂

Karadom said on Jul. 27, 2011

And I was just about to send some scans.
And in other news: 52% of the NP readers would save Slippy?!

Halloween said on Jul. 27, 2011

Haha, I like how NP pointed out that the best game for the SNES is the only choice that didn’t get the other games in the series localized.

Even Pilotwings had two sequels, and is even on the VC!

man said on Jul. 27, 2011

I could never bear to not save Slippy. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever let her die.

Though I should note I only ever played the SNES version, don’t know how annoying she is in the N64 version.

Mahan said on Jul. 27, 2011

I can’t believe more people want another Megaman X game than Chrono Trigger, Actraiser

i mean Megaman X is a good game but not better than Actraiser and Chrono Trigger (and modern day capcom would probably screw it up)

Mahan said on Jul. 27, 2011

to add to my previous statement Megaman X has had many sequels and Actraiser and Chrono Trigger (not counting Chrono Cross because even though it’s a good game i want something like what happens after the crew in the original fixes everything) have none

Walruslord said on Jul. 27, 2011

I wish Nintendo would actually listen to their fans… I’d kill for an earthbound remake or virtual console port.

Whatisthisidon'teven said on Jul. 27, 2011

If Nintendo “listened to the fans” they’d be bankrupt. By Earthbound fan logic Eathbound should get a new installment every year, and every other game should be dropped.

DJMankiewicz said on Jul. 27, 2011

Man, I’m afraid you’re a little confused. Slippy’s a male.

All the same, I like Slippy. Sure he’s the least capable fighter, but I like an underdog. His voice may be a little annoying, but compared to the modern version of Toad’s voice? Yeah, I’ll take Slippy’s any day. I miss the Toad voice from Mario Kart 64. I’ll take “high pitched but clear” to “gravely smoker’s voice, yet still high pitched” any day.

The demand for Earthbound keeps on making itself clear. Will Nintendo ever just cave and do what they already did and never got sued for?

kenisu said on Jul. 27, 2011

Finally, a blurb on EarthBound that DOESN’T bring up “trippy battle backgrounds” or “beating up hippies with baseball bats”. 😀 At least not directly.

Kelsyjones said on Jul. 27, 2011

@Whatisthisidon’teven: I’d have to disagree with you there.

Anonymous said on Jul. 27, 2011

@Whatisthisidon’teven
…What? What kind of fan logic is THAT?… I’ve never seen an EB fan say “Nintendo should drop Mario and work on MOAR EARTHBOUNDZ!!!!!!” “OMG LOLOL MAEK MOAR EARTHBOUNZ!!1!” or any of the like.
You’re probably thinking of how fans want a Mother 4, but that doesn’t mean we want as many installments in the series as Final Fantasy. (In fact I personally am glad the series stopped at 3, since it really ended it all perfectly, but that’s just me”.

Also…
>Should Fox Save Slippy?
>Most people voted “yes”.
…whatever happened to all the people who hate his constant moaning and “HELP ME FOX!”..?

Matteomax said on Jul. 27, 2011

Yay! I voted!! (EarthBound PWNS Super Mario Kart!)

Walruslord said on Jul. 27, 2011

@Whatisthisidon’teven I disagree, while I’d like to see perhaps a mother 4 or a reboot of the series entirely I’m fine with it being a trilogy. The thing want more than ever is an EB remake with Animal crossing style graphics/ art direction. Put it on the Wii U and I guarantee it’ll be successful. At the very least a VC release, those really do print money. Plus if nintendo listened to their fans no way in hell they’d go bankrupt, they’d make their fans happy and make more money by selling games that the fans want to buy and play!

Kris said on Jul. 27, 2011

@Mahan There is actually an ActRaiser 2 for SNES, but it isn’t really that good. It’s only the platforming/action, none of the God game aspect.

Anon said on Jul. 27, 2011

I’m kinda impressed that EarthBound won against Donkey Kong Country and even Mario Kart. That’s just… wow.

Jungyin said on Jul. 27, 2011

Whatisthisidon’teven is obviously baiting, what with using a meme spawned from the nether-regions of the internet as a name and all. And I realize that I too am biting by calling attention to him.

Also it looks like a bot slipped through, Mato.

Kuwanger said on Jul. 27, 2011

I agree about being surprised about EarthBound winning over Donkey Kong Country, which seemed to have a much greater following, coverage, etc. EarthBound seems to be more of a cult classic and in many ways the very direct opposite of Donkey Kong Country: a focus on more subtle humor with more simplistic graphics vs a focus on more direct humor with ground breaking, for the SNES anyways, graphics.

Oh, and as far as Mega Man X vs Chrono Trigger vs Actraiser, you can probably guess where I stand on the issue, although I’m partial to Actraiser (and the Gaia series as well) and could definitely see the potential in another Actrasier-like game. But, Mega Man [Original/X/Zero] is such a generic platform game, where all fans generally really want is a new collection of levels, that it seems the sort of trivial thing Capcom could make for WiiWare or the like. And Chrono Trigger is such a well-regarded stand-alone game, I can only really imagine some sort of revival only possibly making regards for it worse (think Star Wars).

Zoom! said on Jul. 27, 2011

I hate to go off topic, but a DS “Mother board” on the ebay auctions isn’t actually Mother related. It’s just a DS Lite with the casing removed to show all it’s circuits and stuff, AKA “the mother board”

DD said on Jul. 27, 2011

Well, that’s great that people are interested in Earthbound. I haven’t read a Nintendo Power magazine since 2002, so I wasn’t quite aware of these polls until the voting for this one was put up earlier.

BLiZIHGUH said on Jul. 28, 2011

I haven’t gotten my issue yet but I’d be willing to bet that somewhere in there, one of the editors went on a long rant about how sad it is that 52% of the poll takers voted to save Slippy Toad. That said, the fact that a somewhat large number of people polled voted to revive Act Raiser is slightly redeeming imo.

Oh! Right. EarthBound. EarthBound… um, yeah, cool! It’s nice to see it appearing in NP every now in then. It’s a good reminder that there are other people who like it, too :3

? said on Jul. 28, 2011

1. Who reads NP anymore besides me?

2. Who would respond t online polls for a magazine barely anybody reads?

It’s a narrow scope, indeed. Good to see EB recognition though, when they aren’t dedicating half the issue to whatever ds game Matt Bozon is working on.

Anonymous said on Jul. 28, 2011

Oh God, looking at these charts makes me want to squeal with happiness ;;
Saving Slippy usually had a prices, like getting to see the Boss’ HP later :A Really, if you’re that dedicated of a Pilot you will protect your comrades in battle and out.
Man, EarthBound really won by a mile there, even past the toughest of competition. :A

Nintendo has been doing an exceedingly poor job with their business practices lately. I understand to a certain degree that they need to remain secretive in their business practices. This is because they need to maintain a fanbase and expel any possible rumors that could damage the company, so by saying nothing, no confirmations can be made. However, in the case of Earthbound and many JRPGs unreleased in the U.S. and other countries, their unwillingness to speak up is simply absurd. The whole Operation Rainfall campaign for Wii is a sad story to me. Three RPGs in Japan (the Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Pandora’s Tower) have all received positive reviews in Japan. The RPG is what made the SNES. Why hasn’t Nintendo taken the same approach with the Wii? They could take the RPG market back from all other competitors by localizing these titles. And yet, they not only say there are no plans to do so, but won’t elucidate on why they won’t. Thats why they are quickly losing money and sales are dropping. But back to Earthbound and SNES. The SNES, in my opinion, was Nintendo’s best system, hands down. The amount of AAA titles and unbelievable RPGs made the system shine. It seems lately, Nintendo has been paying more attention to the hardcore audience (quietly though), by rereleasing Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III on the VC. Perhaps with further hardcore releases, they could eventually rerelease Earthbound (however, I won’t hold my breath). I’m just hoping Nintendo will look back to the SNES days as their business model for the future. And most of all, I hope they give EB the second chance it most certainly deserves. I would take a revival of Earthbound any day over the other titles presented in the article (though speaking simply of the ones in the article, my hats off to Chrono Trigger). Sorry for going off on a tangent lol, I always do

unnoticedninja said on Jul. 29, 2011

I agree with RKPK on the issue with the Wii RPGs, and Nintendo should just hold a poll on whether or not those games should be localized, and make a decision based on the poll. The same thing should have been done for EarthBound on the VC, but I guess Nintendo still wants to make money from the 60% non gamers that buy crap games on Wii and DS instead of hardcore gamers. I do hope that a poll is held for most wanted 1st and 3rd party characters for the next Super Smash Bros. game, and that Nintendo should listen to some of their polls.

DJMankiewicz said on Jul. 29, 2011

Kuwanger, that’s one Boomer of a post. I will only add one thing. Chrono Trigger wasn’t stand-alone, they made one sequel on the PS1. Chrono Cross is itself a very fun game, at least I enjoyed it. The ending (the true one) is pretty confusing but overall I liked it.

RKPK said on Jul. 30, 2011

Never played Chrono Cross. I did know there was a sequel, but I was just saying a revival of the series in general would be badass beyond all recognition. Still, I just EB more than anything lol

Anonymous said on Jul. 30, 2011

I want Actraiser’s REAL sequel in my Wii.. right now!
… I’m waiting!

Anonymous said on Jul. 30, 2011

What, the Soul Blazer trilogy?

I don’t think Square remembers that Enix didn’t just make Dragon Quest. Forget ActRaiser, need EVO 2.

DBW said on Jul. 30, 2011

Nintendo isn’t the same without old series, but also is different without introducing new franchises the way they used to.

Pickle said on Aug. 1, 2011

😀 I voted in that poll on accident. Good to see I helped make a difference!

I’ve got a formal letter typed up for Nintendo, but I still haven’t sent it. Now I have another statistic to throw in.

I’m so glad Earthbound won…even though it didn’t debut on SNES

Zoom! said on Aug. 21, 2011

Off topic, but it would be cool if someone typed in Earthbound-related thing in Google trends.

RadicOmega said on Sep. 13, 2011

I don’t see how Nintendo not listening to their fans would maintain a good buisness. At least 1000 people stoped buying Nintendo Products because of that! (This was because there was no American relese of Mother 3 mostly)If Nintendo listened to their fans they’d gain 1000 fans! Get your facts straight Nintendo! >:(

Zoom! said on Sep. 13, 2011

@RadicOmega We should stop insulting Reggie “I hear what you say, but don’t a shit” Fils-Aime cause thats not helping matters. He likely gets so many letters from MOTHER fans that he refers to them as junk mail. 🙁

RadicOmega said on Sep. 16, 2011

@Zoom! I see, but he can actually be trying harder to make a remake of EB M3 or M

Zoom! said on Sep. 16, 2011

@RadicOmega Agreed.

Matteomax said on Dec. 15, 2011

In the December issue of Nintendo Power, they mentioned EarthBound in it. It was about “worst video game situations”. Here it is.

“When I played EarthBound way back when, I was horribly under-leveled when I reached the Lost Underworld. The enemies like the Chomposaur decimated my party time and again. I must have been stuck for hours, since there was always something in front of the exit that I couldnt run from….”

Really, the Lost Underworld? Come on! All of us old grandpas beat it without any problems back then! 😀

Matteomax said on Dec. 15, 2011

This isn’t my submission, though……..
