Convincing People to Try EarthBound

Checopoco sent in another picture of a MOTHER 1 tip that was probably from some Japanese magazine of some sort. It’s blurry as heck, but I can tell what it’s talking about:

Basically, in Valentine/Ellay, there are gang members walking around, who, if you talk to them, will fight you. But they don’t disappear after you beat them, so you can keep talking to them over and over. The trick here is to get one into a corner, like the trees shown here, and then just keep pressing A constantly to get into battle with them, battle them, and repeat.
This works even better if you’re using an emulator and use the speed-up function – in fact that’s how I got my characters to really high levels while testing my MOTHER 1+2 translation patch a few months ago. Just, be sure you keep track of your HP or you might die before you realize it 😛

Another one of these magazine clippings? From the same person? Weird. But I hope he finds more , these things are awesome! Are they from Famitsu?
Hello Earthbound fans! We are starting a campaign to write letters to Nintendo asking for Xenoblade, Last Story and Pandora’s Tower to be released Stateside. I’m sure all of you guys know the pain of Nintendo of America not caring about you, you can even throw in a word for Earthbound/MOTHER as well!
^ I hope this isn’t blantent advertising but scince your not selling Viagra pills or something like that I’ll let you pass 😉
On topic, I love this tip because I never knew about it. Building on G.Wicks comment I still love how you have to look out for Stone of Origins and other 1HKOs. Itoi was never kidding around when he said he never play tested Holy Thingamajig Mountains difficulty level.

If I’m not mistaken, this is the technique Kenisu used to get to 99 for the Starmen.net badge contest. 🙂

@Mato: BTW, why didn’t you just manually set the stats for your characters to max for testing? 🙂 You know, since you’re one of these: http://www.moviegoods.com/Assets/product_images/1010/161004.1010.A.jpg

Yeah, I did this back when MOTHER 1+2 came out. 🙂

LucasTizma: When doing final-ish testing I preferred to avoid doing things regular players couldn’t do, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the tip. I did this in Mother 1+2 to Level all my characters to Level 99, so that it’s easier to play because of the high level.
I stand in front of the guy with the shortest text (in the german translation by “domflo” he says “Verzieh dich, du Dussel!”), blocked his way so he can’t escape, blocked the A Button, plugged in the charging cable and let it so for a few days. Now I can concentrate me to the story instead of level grinding.
Mother 1 was, for me, the first and only game with this kind of trick for level grinding, or are there other games where you can make such a trick?
I’ve actually done this before! It’s a neat trick. It’s cool because usually you beat the game with your characters at level 30-40, et cetera, so it’s cool to see the characters in 90’s. The annoying thing is that even at those super high levels, the characters aren’t as omnipotent as I expected. The game is definitely easier but sometimes enemies still get cheap shots in.
