EB Zero Tops Virtual Console Poll!

If you’re playing the Mother 1+2 translation I just released and run into any bugs, post about them here, it’ll be easier for me to keep track of them all when I go to make an updated patch someday. The currently known-for-sure problems are:
Choosing the fastest text speed in battle will make it say it’s the second-fastest speed on the file-loading menu. For now, if you want the battle text speed to be as fast as possible, select the speed from the battle menu and ignore what it says on the file select screen. If your items are full when you try to retrieve an item from your sister (who acts like Tracy in EarthBound), the text will break out of the window and do a weird wrap-around thing like so.I thought I had fixed all of these lines before releasing the patch – so if you come across any more, definitely let me know!- People are reporting that sometimes you have to press the A Button twice to advance text – I know this happens in the original ROM sometimes, but if I could see this in action with the English version it’d help me a lot. I’m not 100% sure this is an issue with my patch yet.
If you run across any bugs, glitches, or obvious typos, let me know! (Preferably with screenshots, if possible 😛 )
Update: I’ve fixed most of the stuff you guys have found and posted a 1.01 patch. Get it here.

Oh, I think I’ve found an actual bug.
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h109/51793Moeman/mother1gbabug01-2011.png
There’s a ? where a $ should be when you’re withdrawing money.
An easy way to fix the speed bug is to go into m1_misc_text.txt, scroll down to where the text speeds are, and swap Fast and VFast. If you’ll notice, the bug is because the gauge on there goes VSlow, Slow, Norm., VFast, Fast; but if you swap VFast and Fast, that will fix the problem.
And about the double press A to advance text problem, I think it happens sometimes when you use Lifeup a-g on someone, though I may just be hitting the button to fast.
One quick note on fixing the text speed bug: Make sure that everything lines up, or weird things could happen!
Bugs shmugs. I could care less…except that purple girl in mothers day. She still bugs the crap out of me. Yeah i am very nit-picky that way.

You mean the double “have”s? No worries, I’ll get on that. It seems having to manually format text produces that problem a lot in my brain 🙁
During my first visit to Magicant and with Flying Man in my party (and the Easy Ring on), I got into a fight with Groucho/Bonus Swoosh. During the fight, Groucho/Bonus Swoosh left the battle, but, instead of Ninten gaining experience, Flying Man gained experience points and Ninten didn’t.
![]() | Mato said on Apr. 30, 2011 |
I think that might happen in the original GBA version too. I’m actually in Magicant right now on my Japanese cart, I’ll give it a shot to make extra sure.
This is not necessarily a glitch, but a slight grammar error in the translation:
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/108/mother12translationmist.png
“I think Ribs is great, too.”
![]() | Mato said on Apr. 30, 2011 |
Miche: Yep, I just checked and it says Flying Man in the original version too when that happens.
Amras: Awesome, thanks.
Amras: It’ll be a grammatical error either way it’s changed. If the ‘is’ becomes ‘are’, then my favorite food, Pizza will show up in that sentence as “I think Pizza are great, too.”
![]() | Poe said on Apr. 30, 2011 |
Perhaps it could be changed to: “I like _____ too!” Then you wouldn’t have to worry about plurals 😀
I’m not sure if this was intentional or not, but the Swoosh, Swooshette and Papa Swoosh’s “fade in/out” animations seem very fast compared to the rest of the enemies. It almost looks like they just appear on the screen.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a screenshot, but I’m (failing) at translating the game, and on line 001, there’s:
“@Brother! I’m so scared! My lamp suddenly starting going crazy!”
Shouldn’t this say “My lamp suddenly STARTED going crazy!” instead of “My lamp suddenly STARTING going crazy!”?
@lotus
Couldn’t Mato make something where like if your food ends with “s”, then it’ll say “are”?
Sometimes it does take 2-3 button presses to advance the text during level-ups, but you guys can just hold down the A button during that part and it will advance as fast as possible.
Are you supposed to be able to sing at the start of the Giygas battle, or is my memory failing? ‘Cos I cant see it…
![]() | Mato said on Apr. 30, 2011 |
I think what’s happening with the A button thing is that the game is actually doing an extra line break or two which increases the amount of time you have to wait until it waits for the button. It’s not a bug, just something that seems unnatural – I remember being annoyed by it while playing the Japanese cart.
Though if it really IS sticking and waiting for three button presses exactly each time, then let me know when/where it happens, with video if possible.
As for typos, I’ll definitely check them all out when I can, so keep ’em coming!
Mumphadumf: you need to wait until he stops talking to you, which is like maybe six or eight rounds in. Then the sing command appears.
Just finished the game. It really puts the rest of the series in perspective once you know the backstory behind Giygas.
I found one more minor text wrapping glitch towards the end of the game:
http://i53.tinypic.com/2h6zp53.png
Maybe it’s because I used the full 6 letters for Teddy’s name?
Found another grammar error:
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/108/mother12translationmist.png
It should be spelled “consciousness”.
![]() | Mato said on Apr. 30, 2011 |
Thanks guys, I posted a 1.01 patch just now, it fixes the stuff you guys have mentioned. It’s not really a big enough deal to warrant its own news post though. But keep looking for stuff if you can!
![]() | Mato said on Apr. 30, 2011 |
rotschleim: I checked, and that question mark when you’re withdrawing cash is in the Japanese version too, so it’s not a bug. I agree that it still seems weird there though.
Thanks for all the hard work. I can’t wait to play through this for the first time.

Hey Schlupi! I see you’re coming for help on the Mother 2 side. 😛
That aside, I get a game crash whenever I fight a Groucho (Or whatever you renamed it to :P) with Lloyd.
Pretty much, if I select Ninten to guard, but accidentally hit FIGHT with Lloyd instead of GUARD, when I press B to go back the game hangs and buzzes like when you pull a GBA cart out of an active GBA. Not sure if this is just me.
I’m using an EZ Flahs IV.
![]() | Mato said on May. 1, 2011 |
Schlupi: I didn’t write the Funland program, so I can’t help too much. Does it crash as soon as you try to run it, or when you try to load something/edit something?
8BitWalugi: who do you have in your party, so I can try to recreate it?
![]() | Foffano said on May. 1, 2011 |
I don’t know if it is a typo, but…
The forgotten man in Magicant says:
Good luck, bad luck.. <- (two dots)
In the Helpful Old Man’s text, “alakazam” should only have one L. I think. Kinda hard to tell with it not being a real word and all. Just pretty sure it’s only one L when I see it usually.
When I was facing the Titanic Ant in the Mother 2 side, it said the Titanic Ant used Def. Up Alpha when it actually was Def. Down Alpha, unless I was seeing things.
I only have Ninten and Lloyd.
Not sure if it’s necessary, but it was in the Crystal Cavern just at the end. I was grinding Lloyd up to Lv. 20.
I can confirm Mother 1+2 works flawless on the gpSPhone app 😛
Is there some bug with text screwing up when read to fast? I was in the train tunnle before Duncans factory geting a few pot shots on starmen to level up Lloyd when I encounterd a Bioscorpian or something like it. I fought it like any regular enemy until it attempted to poisen Lloyd. The game then said something along the lines of
-The th poioint
-Popopo scrrocr
I tried my darn hardest to recreate the glitch but no avail. I thought I might as well tell you anyways
When I fought insect enemies like the Centipede and the Fly, I noticed that when I CHECKED them, their description said “Strong against sprays”, and then in the next line (in the Centipede’s case) it says “Kill it with bug spray!”. Is this line saying the wrong thing or are they actually strong against bug spray?

The man in the desert says:
@It IS rather pricey, so I
I can’t say I blame ya. <- (I I)
I don't know if it was already fixed, though.
![]() | Mato said on May. 3, 2011 |
Yeah, I fixed it in v1.01.
@testyten
Actualy I think I have pin pointed your bug! It happend to me too twice! As far as I know, When a Tarantula (red arachnid! that lives in the desert and train tracks) tries to poison Lloyd and fails, It spins out a line of jibberish.
I havent tested it with Lloyd being named something else. It might work diffrently that way as I cant figure out why it would only work on Lloid.
![]() | Foffano said on May. 5, 2011 |
@Oh, that wasn’t a cough.
it’s just something I say <-(lowercase)
out of habit.
![]() | Mato said on May. 5, 2011 |
Thanks, I didn’t catch that one!
A small little bug, but if you try to obtain “Info” on an item, press B to go exit the description, then go to “Give”, the Give box will be displayed on top of the larger description box and the name list won’t be shown. Further, if you cancel out of that with B, the upper left corner of the description box will be erased where the “Who?” box was.
Hi Mato!
I have just completed the game. Thanks very much for your hard work translating Mother and giving me a good reason to finally play it for the first time.
A few things I noticed during the game:
1. The Easy Ring only works when it’s equipped to Ninten. I don’t know if this is intentional or not, but it might be good to include this information on your list of tips/suggestions if it is intentional.
2. I did not receive the Franklin Badge from Pippi due to my inventory being full, and I wasn’t ever given another chance to receive it. Usually through the rest of the game when you’re trying to receive an item when your inventory is full you can remove an item and then talk to the NPC again and you’ll receive it, but that was never an option with Pippi. Once again, I don’t know if this is a bug or not, but you might also want to include this information on your tips/suggestions page if it’s not a mistake.
3. On your list of tips/suggestions, the PSI technique list with descriptions made things a lot easier. I might also considering adding a list of how much PP each technique does since the game doesn’t have that information either.
Thanks a lot again for this project and congratulations!
![]() | Mato said on May. 6, 2011 |
For people saying there’s a bug with a poison tarantula in the desert, there’s an enemy description with something like, “Poison pois on po i son”. Is that maybe what you’re seeing?
![]() | Schlupi said on May. 6, 2011 |
@ Mato: It crashes when trying to load ANY of the text files to edit.
@mato actualy the description is very similar if not the same. I dont know why it would show up in the battle text though.
P.S. off topic but did you change the “very last definant spoiler-ish ending with the phone ” so the text would be more open ended then the EarthBoundZero ending? I like the way it was phrased. Weird, I know but it was a nice touch 😛
![]() | Mato said on May. 6, 2011 |
Schlupi: Funland only works with m1_main_text.txt. All other text files have to be edited with a standard text editor like Notepad.
RandomGuardian: I only translated what the Japanese text had, I don’t know who originally wrote which version.
I’ve been playing the Mother 2 side of the game lately just for curiosity’s sake and found a couple status-related issues where the icon to represent a couple status effects just prints a little bit of garbage instead. I’m not sure if they’re cause by the emulator I was using (gpSP on the PSP), the patch, or just poor programming by the people who ported it.
This one is supposed to be the icon for a cold:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r154/LUIGI074/M12Bug1.png
And this one is supposed to be the icon for being poisoned: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r154/LUIGI074/M12Bug2.png
All the other ones I found so far (sunstroke, nausea, and mushroomed) show up as normal, but for some reason these two are the ones that are a bit bugged. Weird.
![]() | Foffano said on May. 8, 2011 |
I just wanted to say that “Atomic Robot” has more than 11 characters.
I don’t know how it could affect the game, but…
![]() | Mato said on May. 8, 2011 |
It shouldn’t cause any problems, unless you get more than one of them to appear in battle at once, then when it adds “A” and “B” to their names, those letters will be printed on the side of the window instead of inside the window.
![]() | Foffano said on May. 8, 2011 |
Good to hear that! Translating some enemies into Portuguese has been a tough work, and each single character counts a lot!
But I can’t remember very well who appears alone…
Wouldn’t you have some kind of list to it?
![]() | Mato said on May. 8, 2011 |
Sadly, I don’t. I don’t know if any such list exists, it would’ve been great to have one.
@guy Ah, okay. I hadn’t seen all the differences between M2 and EB (just the ones mentioned on the M2 vs. EB site) so I didn’t know what the deal was with those symbols for colds and poisoning. Thanks for clarifying that.
I found a bug with the super spray in MOTHER 1. When it’s used it makes the enemy attack sound. If I remember correctly, the super spray made the player attack sound before this patch (I guess it was the only part of the attack sounds that weren’t reversed!).
I’ve played through most of the game and only one bug on the 1.01 version that I noticed… When Pippi leaves Ninten’s party and you go back to talk to her by her house, if she has too many items in her inventory and Ninten’s inventory is too full to hold them it does a glitchy text wraparound thing.
The names of the Diadem of Kings and the Bracer of Kings are switched (the diadem is called the bracer and vice versa).
“Gabilan spewed a a sticky substance!”
I don’t know if this one was intentional, what with the next line, too, being a typo, but, “I gard this gate.” Was that intentional, along with, “Hoo goes there?”
Other than that, I haven’t seen any serious errors. Good work, Mato.
![]() | Mato said on Jun. 12, 2011 |
Cool thanks, I think you’re the first one to catch that one.
The kids in the kid town make kid-like spelling mistakes in their text, so yeah, those other lines are wrong on purpose. I was always worried people might think it was unintentional 😛
Mato,
I wanted to say thank you for all the amazing work your doing for us 🙂 I wish there was a way I could help :/ let me know on here 🙂 and I think there was a spelling error with. Someone in mother 1’s magicant. I only remember because laughed… Alot 🙂
-baio
Possible glitch with Mother 1 side found.
If you use the Big Bag in battle, it will say something like “{NAME} used a Big Bag!”.
However, if used outside of battle, it says something along the lines of “{NAME} pulled a Magic Herb out of the Big Bag and used it.”
![]() | BB Gang Zombie said on Mar. 30, 2012 |
Actually, that’s not a glitch.
The Mother 1 side has separate text for battle actions than overworld. In fact, it’s much shorter that way in order to fit the text box.
Oh, ok. It just sounds strange that you use the Big Bag itself in battle, but outside of battle you pull a Magic Herb out of it and use it.
I really hope you still read these because I’m having a serious bug with Mother 1; I’m level 7 and only have Healing alpha, Lifeup alpha and telepathy!
Please help!!
![]() | Mato said on Aug. 14, 2012 |
I don’t think anything in the hack messes with that stuff. I’m not sure what you’re supposed to have by level 7 but that doesn’t sound TOO crazy…
Well, I have Lifeup alpha, healing alpha and telepathy but the walkthrough says that I’m supposed to have LifeUp α, Hypnosis, Healing α and Defense Up α.
But the wiki also says that the order that you learn PSI on Mother 1+2 is different from EBzero so, I guess I should just keep playing and hope for the best?
I can make a video of it if you want.
![]() | Mato said on Aug. 14, 2012 |
Well, some things you can’t use outside. If you’re in battle and want to use certain PSI techniques, remember that pressing left or right will cycle through different windows. The game doesn’t make that clear, so a lot of people play the game not realizing they have useful PSI they could use.
I think this is because in Mother, you learn PSI at random after battle. This is completely different from EarthBound, where you learn PSI immediately on level up; and Mother 3, where you learn PSI by getting and losing a feverish feeling by walking around.
Well, yeah, I know, sometimes after battle it says I learned a new psi, but I check it out and it doesn’t have nothing new.
Ok, here’s the problem:
I can access my PSI during battle and I can see it on the status screen but if I go to the PSI menu, there’s only the first 3 PSI you learn.
So, is it an emulator problem?
Maybe the ROM is glitched??
But at least I should be able to beat now that I know that I can access my psi during battle, but still..
If anyone knows how to fix this please help!!
![]() | Mato said on Aug. 15, 2012 |
I’m fairly certain only PSI that can be used outside is available/displayed in that menu.
Again, it sounds like absolutely nothing is wrong, it’s just that the game is weird that way.
Yep, I figured that out.
I feel so retarded right now…
But, thanks for helping anyway!!
![]() | Mato said on Sep. 9, 2012 |
I think that was fixed in the latest version of the patch, let me know what version you have so I can make sure though.
Hey there, caught another text-wrap bug that I haven’t seen in here. I’m using the v1.01 patch from the Mother1+2 Fan Translation site, hard-patched with Lunar IPS.
At home, if you ask Minnie to store BreadCrumbs, the lines “I can’t hold onto [your] BreadCrumbs” and “I’m selfish like [that]” wrap.

![]() | Mato said on Oct. 7, 2013 |
Great, thanks!
These aren’t really “bugs,” but more or less ways to make the game look a little nicer.
Since you went with the original angel-based hierarchy of bracelets, the goddess bracelet is displayed as “GoddessBrac” in its truncated form. I suggest turning he “braces” into “bands”: Fairy Band, Angel Band, GoddessBand.
Changing the first words in the FlamePendnt and EarthPendnt will let you spell the second words out entirely with no forced shortenings. For example, FirePendant and SoilPendant.
This is more for Mother 2 than anything, but changing “CHEK” into “LOOK” in the main menu, and and “OTHR” into “ETC.” in the PSI menu might look a bit better.
I did run into at least one text problem, where a female NPC used two dots for an ellipsis instead of three. I need to track her down, though.
Well geez, now thar I’m looking for her, I can’t seem to find her. Guess that’s not much of a help!
