Not necessarily a big fan of the new M4 project…
it almost seemed to me like they wanted to outdo the original M3, which kinda makes me feel… I don’t know…

Either way, this is definetly awesome. Congrats to chasu.

hey guys, I heard from on a recent podcast with a Pete Dorr and Happy Console Gamer (from youtube) that Mother 4 was under fire and was going to have to change it’s name… is this true in any way??

This is a reply to the first message.

How is that a bad thing? Wanting to outdo Mother 3? That just means they want to make the best game they can, and I don’t see an issue with that.

missy said on Dec. 4, 2010

@ TeamMountainGaming

I don’t think so. I think the only reason they would have to change it is if they sold it, right? As long as it’s free for distribution, I don’t think there is a problem.

This appeared in NGamer 56 page 80-81 for anyone who’s interested.

I don’t Mother 4 will release for reasons: After TWO years there still in ALPHA , They are trying to make a TRUE game that is ALMOST inpossible , and like with earthbound 64 the enginge there using might get out dated / not working.

Hey this is my scan image 😀

Skye said on Dec. 4, 2010

@thomas1up With that reasoning you’d think SVO would never have a proper release either since we’ve been in alpha for at least 3 years with all the engine switching.

thomas1up said on Dec. 4, 2010

Uhm well……
You can not grasp the none things I can think of for this comment.

@EB_X
Eh, just my opinion…
I’m probably one of the few, if not ONLY, person who isn’t excited about this project.

(It’d be nice if there was a demo to judge at least, but after so long we still barely have any screenshots…)

Skye said on Dec. 4, 2010

Being one of the people who’s working on SVO I understand what it is to try and make a decent game. If Chaisu doesn’t feel like releasing many screenshots, that’s ok with me. The less screenshots they release the more surprises when the game is released.

Besides, what’s the point of showing a lot of ingame screenshots, the graphics style is clear, some of the music is released, … so you know how this game will look like.

It seems to me you just want more information on all the locations the game has and/or storyline but consider a game developed by a real game company, they don’t reveal much of the storyline either before the actual release.

As for gameplay videos, maybe their GUI isn’t entirely finished yet and they don’t want people to think the game will have a crappy user interface.

tl;dr be patient, it isn’t being developed by a game studio but rather by people like you and me who have a daytime job and other stuff to do in real life.

I’m not too excited about the project either. It might be alright as a stand-alone fan game, but it can’t be even close to outdoing the original games. I’m also afraid that people will think of the game as an official Mother 4 and edit Mother wikis with info about it and such, like how Yokuba’s name was changed to Fassad in the fan translation.

Anonymous said on Dec. 4, 2010

Im not too excited about Mother 4 I must say. I will play it if it ever gets released but there is just something about it that isnt winning me over (perhaps being a fan made game?). I guess I should give them credit though for putting work into such a large project.

thomas1up said on Dec. 5, 2010

I have mixed feelings about Mother 4.
I’m not excited because it wont have that..humor Itoi had because he had some things and wordings that made the Mother games..Mother I’m also worried about the fact of it being a short game as it is made by people with jobs it’s harder and it might span to 4 chapters, and I think MOTHER 4 should be made like with some bootleg way to make a game cartridge/disc because it wont feel the same playing it on the computer (The fan translation is a completly diffrent matter as I put it on one of those R4 card like things) Now I’m not asking Itoi himself to make it I’d actully rather he didn’t as he said he wanted no more work on the Mother series but if he was up to doing a Mother 4 I would much prefer his but on the other hand I’m a bit excited because the screenshots look a bit promising also Saturn valley online is a diffrent matter as it is a MMO.

Naja said on Dec. 5, 2010

As I always say, taking what Itoi said literally was kind of dumb. Naming it “Mother 4” is also wrong. The fact that the main character IS the guy who’s making the game is terribly wrong.
Do not want.

thomas1up said on Dec. 5, 2010

Also Itoi said he wanted the Player to be the main character so like we could make our character.
I swere mother 3 was a great way to end it all.

Anonymous said on Dec. 5, 2010

I just hope they give the proper credit Itoi deserves. To me, Itoi deserves more than just a line saying “MOTHER (C) Shigesato Itoi”. Especially after the hell he went through during M3’s production.

They’re working hard, and this can’t be easy, but sometimes a game series… just needs to end.
If they kept dragging out Mother forever, it would begin to lose its magic.
Now if this game’s story/main enemy differs from Mother 3’s (which from what I read sounds like it), then it’ll be more interesting, but I think this would be better as a standalone game, I’m just not liking how they’re calling it Mother FOUR. What if Itoi wants to make it one day and changes his mind? I highly doubt it and it’s probably never gonna happen, but still. My biggest thing is that it’s not being made by Itoi himself, but there’s not much that can be done about that.

tl;dr Nothing can ever replace the original Mother 3,2, and 1. This could very well be a good game, and it DOES like nice, the spriting is VERY nice, but to me personally, it’s a fan game and nothing else, and… maybe should have had a different title than “Mother 4”.

I Have feelings about MOTHER4.
Its pretty good so far.
it kinda looks like MOTHER 3
One day maybe MOTHER 4 Will be real
or what we’ve been waiting for,
MOTHER3 In U.S

Zinco said on Dec. 6, 2010

I view the fangame Mother 4 in much the same light as I do fanfiction: while I’m immanently skeptical of creators who piggyback on pre-existing works, I recognize that these efforts do have appeal for fans of the original work and even have the potential to be good in their own right. Billing the game as a sequel is limiting, however, and even presumptuous. I think if they billed it instead as an untold story within the Mother universe, it would be easier to swallow for fans, and operate more as a tribute than as a substitute.

I have to agree with what others are saying here. I really feel like it should just stay as a trilogy, end before it becomes poor. As a fan of the Halo series I find that any Halo game released after the 3rd one has not left a very good impression on me. Same goes for the Pokemon series.

Richard said on Dec. 6, 2010

If you don’t like the fangames, fine. Forget about them. I think it’s a great idea and look forward to it. All of you saying it’s a bad idea, at least these guys are trying hard to give the fans of mother/earthbound a game that will keep the series alive; the snobody’s music is great and the sprite work and game setting are interesting touches. Lighten up people, you’re getting a game made by fans for fans and you’re also getting more mother. Over two years of work so far on a fangame of mother. That’s something we mother fans should be proud of.

Naja said on Dec. 7, 2010

Richard, Im fine with fangames also. I just think its a bad idea to call this fan game “Mother 4″… call it something else. Shigesato Itoi saying he’d like to play another Mother game made by someone else was just a witty way to say he’s very tired and isn’t thinking about making another one. At least that’s my take on it. I don’t think a game could be considered partof the Mother series without Itoi doing it… right?

Richard said on Dec. 7, 2010

@Naja OK, but what would you name it?
