Tips for Buying EarthBound

May 17th, 2010 | MOTHER 3

Assorted Astrology-Related Names sent this in. It’s a 2006 review of MOTHER 3 by Hyper magazine, a gaming mag in Australia.

That’s a pretty high score they gave it, and it wasn’t even in English 😯

I love seeing old reviews/previews like this, so if you’ve come across any that haven’t been featured on the site yet, share your knowledge!

40 hour game? My first playthrough was 20 hours, if that.

I don’t mind collecting the odd Hyper magazine every now and then. They do very good reviews. 🙂

I spent way more than 40 hours on this game, and I still missed a few things. I’d hate to wonder how much of the game I missed if I only played it in 20 hours… there is so much to the game, its an insult to the game to beat it as fast as you can.

It only took you 20 hours, Starfox? You must of missed quite a lot…

@StarFoxA: It normally takes me 40 hours…

I’ve never really spent more than 25 hours on a single playthrough and that includes getting back sprites and rare drops.

9.2?! Geez, there was a MOTHER fan in the team…

40 hour-gameplay?! It only took me 5 to 6 hours of my horribel life.

Ah, I wish I read this. Reminds me, I think Yahtzee writes the back page column for this mag. Or was that PC Gamer…

And yay for Tomato et al for getting rid of the only “Minus” they listed!

At Lol:
‘Cancelled’ is an alternate spelling, and ‘realised’ is a British/Australian spelling.
Anyway, it’s really neat that they did this, I always love it when Magazines outside the US talk about the MOTHER series, like RetroGamer and Hyper.

Actually, when you think about it, Mother 3’s an almost perfect game. Hahaha, as of now, I still can’t see any flaws in it.

It has great gameplay, a beautiful soundtrack, cute visuals that really fit the game’s style, and an AMAZING story.

The gameplay, even for an RPG, doesn’t get repetitive, and the game isn’t too easy or too hard. Enemy fights don’t get frustrating, and the no-random-encounter thing really helps too.

The game’s presentation is amazingly fitting for the experience. The music, the graphics, both amazing. The game’s soundtrack is memorable and fits the situation, the emotion, and the settings. The charm of its graphics is one that only can fit this series. I can’t imagine any other way of presenting Mother 3. The experience would really change with different visuals and stuff.

But the best part of Mother 3 is its amazing plot. The emotions, the randomness, the characters, the events… Most of the things that make Mother 3’s experience different from all other RPGs are here. The experience in the game is unique to each and every person.

It’s not just those things that make the game perfect. Mother 3 is one of the only games that can convey emotions without the need for voice acting. Just through words and music. The simplicity of Mother 3 makes it a very awesome game.

Overall… Mother 3 = Awesome

Hmm…. Nowhere Islands = Beatles reference? Never crossed my mind for some reason. Being the Beatles fan he is, that possibly would be the only usage of the English word “Nowhere” that he ever came into contact with (the word being written in Katakana in the game). Makes sense.
