Tips for Buying EarthBound

May 9th, 2010 | EarthBound, Images

Josh sent this in the other day. It’s a scan from the latest issue of Nintendo Power, in a section talking about future predictions made in Nintendo games or something like that:

(click for full-size)

Apparently MOTHER 3 or EB were also mentioned briefly in something in the last issue of Nintendo Power too, but I don’t have any info or scans about that.

I find it funny that they rate it a 2 on the “dangerometer.”

“Overzealous Fans” LOL

someEBfan said on May. 9, 2010

overzealous fans? They must be underestimating us…

Fred McNanner said on May. 9, 2010

A very big tret indeed.

James said on May. 9, 2010

We wouldn’t be a threat if NoA would just support EB themselves a little more. But no, I have to make up for their deficiency by wearing a Snow Wood hoodie.

NeonSquid said on May. 9, 2010

We should start grabbing baseball bats and bash everyone in the head. Then we’ll see how “low” the dangerometer is.

JamesBond007 said on May. 9, 2010

Biggest Threat – Fans who want EarthBound on Virtual Console.
Dangerometer – 11/10.

Kyoo said on May. 9, 2010

when it comes to mother, there is no such thing as being over zealous, one can not be zealous enough 😛

Matoking said on May. 9, 2010

I dunno if to be amused or not at the “Dangerometer” part.

Sisto said on May. 9, 2010

Heh. EB has been getting a lot of recognition lately. Good or bad? Hopefully good. It’s been mentioned in both this issue and a previous issue from not too long ago. I really hope NoA does something with EB involving the Virtual Console. 😉

yut said on May. 9, 2010

OH, if you look in the second mail page about Wario DIY youll find someone saying they’re gonna make a game with ness BTW.

MoonSide said on May. 9, 2010

Hopefully they realize that we want Mother…since it is Mothers’ Day!

Food said on May. 9, 2010

Is the dangerometer supposed to be about the “overzelous fans” or something else?

starstormer said on May. 9, 2010

Wow so we are the biggest threat. But to what are we a threat to. And also is it good that there is a 2 on the dangerometer or is it bad? That whole thing at the bottom confused me. I’m not sure if the dangerometer is refering to the overzelous fans or what since that was kind of unclear.

Dynamitekyle said on May. 9, 2010

Hey, the more mentions the better.

sg_06 said on May. 9, 2010

The danger-meter is only at 2 because wide-spread love for Earthbound will only improve the world once we take it over.

Rhyselinn said on May. 9, 2010

What do they mean by threat? I think I know the answer to that…

To my understanding, the entire article is saying, “if this the games featured here became real, what would the biggest threat to Earth be?”

So,for Earthbound, the biggest danger to Planet Earth would be the overzealous fans who would be insanely happy if Earthbound became reality. As for why it got a 2? Well, Ness and his friends did take care of the aliens. 🙂

blahblah said on May. 9, 2010

BIG threat

blahblah said on May. 9, 2010

i have this article 🙂

N0 3y3 d33r said on May. 9, 2010

Biggest threat, Normal people who won’t conform to be satisfied with the meager work Nintendo has been releasing of late.

Seriously people, few games for the Wii have been coming out, and when they do most don’t cater to the needs of fans, or most anybody at that, more and more casual games that get bought once and then abandoned, it not only hurts the fans, but also the company.
Child friendly is great, but Earthbound IS child friendly, didn’t a silent Hill game come out for the Wii?

MG said on May. 9, 2010

And the 2 Resident Evil games.

SmaMan said on May. 9, 2010

So after 15 years of EB sieging, letter writing campaigns, and countless petitions, all we can get is a measly two on the dangermeter?!

Clearly we are not doing enough my comrades. Initiate sequence EB-6282K10!

Seifer said on May. 9, 2010

“overzealous fans”… pretty sure that translates to “shut the f up and stop calling us”

Murcielo said on May. 10, 2010

I see this more along the lines of a non-offensive mention of the game itself, since it has been quite a while since they have mentioned Earthbound in Nintendo Power. I necessarily won’t place blame on those who over-did their attempt to promote or push the hopes of the games eventual re-release, but simply reading between the lines on this won’t help anything.

Come on, I’ve made an audio rant about Earthbound and Nintendo and yet, I’ve realized that whenever they care to release it, we’ll be ready to jump with glee.

I don’t think the whole “Take Me Seriously!” attitude would hurt very much, but when you aggressively thrust your desires upon others; well, you know what happens then. Point is, I’m not blaming anyone for what this may or may not mean. I just see them pointing out the game since we have brought it to their attention on numerous occasions.

PK Saturn said on May. 10, 2010

What did other games get on the Dangerometer?

Kyoo said on May. 10, 2010

I was wondering the exact same thing PK Saturn

Batandy said on May. 10, 2010

Hey mato, look your e-mails,i sent you some scans of the italian nintendo magazineabout earthbound

Mato said on May. 10, 2010

When did you send them?

Josh said on May. 10, 2010

Nintendo Power is making a joke, most of the writers have said they are big fans of the series anyway. I think with the Dangerometer, they’re judging by the enemies and dangers in game, not the “Overzealous Fans”. Really, EarthBound is basically the normal world minus a few wild animals and possessed machinery, which isn’t really as bad in contrast to games that scored higher on the Dangerometer, which have countless hoards of tanks and bombs and armed robots. 😛

r.g.j. said on May. 10, 2010

is it just me or is there an increase of earthbound in the fan letter sections?

Mr.T said on May. 10, 2010

We are not OVER ZeaLOs We are under zealos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Susan said on May. 10, 2010

Kyoo, as you said earlier, with Earthbound it is not possible to be overzealous, we are not zealous enough. I totally agree!

I just looked at the ESRB website to see for myself…there it is. Right there in a yellow box, right above the “System: SNES” : WII. What, do these people want to kill us or something?! Even though I own Earthbound on the SNES, I still want it on the Wii.

I agree with all the posts above though, we fans are the biggest threat…MWA HA HA. 😀 And IF/WHEN Earthbound is released, we certainly will be unstoppable in our joy…

Let’s hope to see Earthbound on Nintendo.com soon, or at least in the next edition of Nintendo Power! Or SOMEWHERE, from someone who can maybe make a difference in Earthbound’s publication…even if it is a small one.

I mean, come on Nintendo, fans have been blogging/discussing/petitioning for/loving/playing/creating fan art for Earthbound for FIFTEEN YEARS?! Are these people blind? Does that not mean anything to them?!?!

If you want i can send it again

Mato said on May. 11, 2010

Yeah, I checked my old mail and my spam folder but don’t see it anywhere.

SuperBlooper057 said on May. 11, 2010

To clear up the dangerometer debacle, they wrote a several page article about video games predicting the future. For example, Mega Man’s spikes got a 10/10.

Shann said on May. 11, 2010

I have a copy of the issue with the Mother 3 reference. It was actually two issues ago. If anyone wants to know what it said, tell me. I can just type it in the comments because it has no pictures. (Or I can scan it if anyone wants a real picture.) I can also scan full pictures of this article, I just got it in the mail a few days ago. I just hope I can be helpful to someone! 😀

Shann said on May. 11, 2010

I can also provide scans of the Earthbound reference in this issue’s Pulse section. (Woot! 2 EB references in one issue!)

zedrein said on May. 11, 2010

Here’s some unfounded optimism for ya; Maybe, just maybe Nintendo is gearing up to release EarthBound for Virtual Console next week?! I mean, it’s been two weeks without a proper VC release here in N. America, perhaps this is time to celebrate!

mustangbrian said on May. 13, 2010

I wrote the e-mail in about the Warioware DIY game, with Ness digging in trashcans getting prizes.
I’m “Suds” 😀

Hyperstar96 said on May. 14, 2010

Correction: It’s been TWELVE MONTHS (at least) since a proper VC release. I can’t even remember the last time they put up a game anyone’s ever heard of. And there’s no way they’re putting Earthbound on there next week; Nintendo hates it.

Anonymous said on May. 14, 2010

We are difinately at least 5000000000000000000000000 out of 10 on that threatometer. We could close nintendo of america down.

sigh said on May. 14, 2010

@Hyperstar96: King Of Fighters ’95. Released April 26th. 18 days ago.

I’d say that’s a lot more recent than 12 whole months.

You fail.

sigh said on May. 14, 2010

P.S: ….to say nothing of the recently released MEGA MAN 4 on Virtual Console.

Games no one has ever heard of, indeed.

sigh said on May. 14, 2010

P.P.S: ….to say NOTHING of the unfair and ridiculous stereotype that just because someone hasn’t heard of a game instantly means it’s not good.

I suppose by that broken logic, Earthbound itself is a bad game because there are people that still haven’t heard of it, yet. Right?

sigh said on May. 14, 2010

P.P.P.S: Also, I love how people continually like to claim that Nintendo “hates” Earthbound. Despite the fact that we KNOW legal issues are to blame for the release on Virtual Console.

Hate, or personal dislike plays absolutely no part in why something is or is not on the VC.

Baised fanboy whining excuses for making uncalled for, ridiculous, snotty remarks against Nintendo is one thing. But adding willful ignorance of facts that we KNOW to be true, on top of that?

That pushes the line of credibility for stupid statements like every word of Hyperstar96’s ridiculous post, to be able to take them seriously WAY across the edge of silly, uninformed, and insulting.

Hyperstar96 said on May. 15, 2010

You know, you could have just stopped at “King of Fighters 95.” Besides, Mega Man 4 isn’t even out in America, smart ass.

Ness and Sonic said on May. 16, 2010

Mato, could you please post a version with “The Revenge of Shinobi” section (it is on the same page; its to the left of Earthbound)? That game had “Copyright Infringement” as its biggest treat and a danger level of three. Here is what I am getting at: it is available on VC. (search “shinobi” on the VC section of the Wii shop channel if you do not believe me.) Something is wrong.

FireStar said on May. 23, 2010

@Ness and Sonic
But sega themselves fixed this only a year after the game came out with a revision that changed some of the marvel look-alikes, then another revision came out that only didn’t remove pink spiderman. Then this VC version even removes the pink spiderman.

You know you guys in the comments are acting over zealous right? lol It’s ok to love the mother games but i’ve seen some people who just go to far with the games. I mean it’s ok to make some fan comic or a animation or a movie, but i’m talking about people who don’t respect anyone who isn’t into the games.

TGP said on Jun. 19, 2010

Haha, I got the issue right after Josh told me he was sending you this. They sure talk about it a lot, for something they’re not putting on their virtual console.

Not that it’s something Homebrew can’t fix in 2.5 seconds, only difference is that they’re missing the money from that.

GoldenEevee said on Jun. 22, 2010

Only 2 out of 10, we are much higher on the dangerometer than that, more like 9000 out of 10

blahblah said on Aug. 5, 2010

if we all are overzealous with earthbound i have something to say to nintendo…..YOUR OVERZEALOUS WITH A FREAKING PLUMBER!!! (i kinda like mario)

What I don’t get is that they can resolve the legal issues just by putting copyright into the “Operations Guide”.

AtomHeartMother said on Mar. 2, 2012

I like how the guys at Nintendo Power never seem to get past the meteorite.

L. Raptor- Rocker of the Dead said on Jun. 22, 2012

Underestimate us, Nintendo Power has! Give Reggie a SMAAASH! to the balls, we must. Show NoA the error of their ways in dealing our Mother, we shall.

misterdigi35 said on Jul. 1, 2013

Ah. Yes. The “dangerometer” is the danger that the game will be not good.
