EarthBound + Chrono Trigger Hack

A few months ago we looked at a pretty big EarthBound reference in an anime show (see here), complete with a truly bizarre Mr. Saturn character.
Then Kelsey sent this in yesterday. I’m not sure if it’s a Mr. Saturn-inspired thing or not, but I thought I’d pass it on anyway:
In the new season of the aime K-on!! I have noticed little Mr. Saturn like key-chains. I noticed it in the first episode on one of the main characters bags(Ritsu’s bag), but in the second episode a similar plushie plays a role in one of the jokes.(Ritsu holds it up, but you find out it actually belongs to Mio) I thought that maybe the animators were fans of EarthBound and decided to sneak in some love, I’m probably trying to get my hopes up about nothing though.

What do you think? Mr. Saturn-inspired or just a coincidence?

Next time you know, they’ll be sporting a yellow backpack!

That pin does look like a Franklin Badge, but that weird head thing looks more like Olimar than a Mr. Saturn.

kawaii!!!!, the one on her backpack reminds me of my own little Mr.Saturn
Sorry to disappoint, this is not a reference to Mr Saturn. Its from a series of small japanese shorts from a crazy show. You can see another reference to them in those little lemon plush toys that Yui takes home.

Is a link to the orange/lemon dudes. Please pardon the insanity that is japanese animation. But in all honesty, any of this stuff seems pretty right at home in the Earthbound universe.
that was actually in season one also when they first purchase it; I thought the same thing right away.
If a series places a great big lampshade on it’s moe elements and even has a character yelling MOE MOE in a fantasy sequence you simply cannot accuse it of being a “moe-blob” anime. K-On!! is far too knowing if you’d actually watched any, much like Lucky Star. It doesn’t parody itself quite as much as Lucky Star though.
Otaku mode off.

I don’t know what all this “moe” talk is about, so I looked it up. Hopefully this will help a few people understand some of the comments here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Moe?from=Main.MoeMoe
I don’t think tvtropes gives a fair enough view on what moe actually is, as it means a FAR greater number of things than simply one character type. The word moe is very hard to define but English speaking people tend to associate it with being a definition of a character cliche, which it is not.

*shakes her walking cane at the youth of america*
an anime called when they cry had sort of an earthbound reference! he main character kiechi looked in someones locker for somthing to defend himself with(jeff)and also the weapon kiechi always uses is a baseball bat! not much though!
In the 6th episode I believe, Ricchan has a spotted mushroom growing out of her head. Episode 7, the Christmas one, is where that little character shows up and I was convinced!

HOWEVER, I wrote this post not long ago, after spotting the REAL Mr. Saturn in the show: http://evanritchie.blogspot.com/2011/11/dude-theres-totally-some-earthbound-in.html
He was on the shelf beside the moustache dude 🙂
I think so!
