Tips for Buying EarthBound

April 27th, 2010 | MOTHER 3

A while back I posted a few things about a game in Japan that translated loosely to “Kappa Road” (see see here and ). It was made by Brownie Brown and had a few quick cameos of MOTHER 3 stuff in it:

In just those screenshots alone, we can see a Pigmask mask, Ocho the octopus, and a merman oxygen robot. What other MOTHER 3 stuff did they hide in the game, we all wondered. Now we can find out, because Nintendo recently announced that it is being released here as “A Kappa’s Trail”:

A Kappa’s Trail (Nintendo DSiWare, June 14): Guide a little mythical river spirit to the human world with your Nintendo DSi stylus in this puzzle adventure. Draw a trail, and the little “kappa” will follow. It’s up to you to ensure he makes it through the gauntlet of enemies and treacherous paths of the Kappa Trail.

I don’t have a DSi, so hopefully folks here can help find other MOTHER 3 stuff in the game when it’s released 😀

Thanks to the many people who sent in news about this!

I’d like to play it! The kappa is very interesting. Too bad that the DSi is region-locked… :<

also first

JoeShmoe said on Apr. 27, 2010

Hmm. Seems there’s been a bit of things centered around Kappa lately.

Alright! Now we have almost 1% of MOTHER 3 officially released in English! 😛

Onion said on Apr. 27, 2010

Awesome. I can’t wait to finally play this.

Paul said on Apr. 27, 2010

This isn’t the first time that stuff from MOTHER 3 has made cameos in other games. I’m pretty sure that the whip from Zelda: Spirit Tracks is a shout-out to the Rope Snake from MOTHER 3.

KingDarian said on Apr. 27, 2010

Finally, a DSiWare exclusive to look forward to. Hopefully they don’t edit out any of the M3 content.

Catson said on Apr. 28, 2010

I’ll be crushed and refuse to buy any more DSiWare if they edit the M3 stuff out ;^;

Getting it im glad there are finnaly some good dsiware games

Hyperstar96 said on Apr. 28, 2010

They’re gonna edit the Mother 3 stuff out you know…

Poe said on Apr. 28, 2010

Removing a few insignificant, unoffensive sprites for no apparent reason seems like more work than the localizers would bother with. No matter how many of you believe NOA has a grudge against the EB series, I don’t think they would waste resources just to be petty.

Will said on Apr. 28, 2010

Awesome, I’ll be buying this.

Ice warrior said on Apr. 28, 2010

Can’t wait to download this game. This summer’s gonna be so fun gamewise

this is awesome but do you know what wound me awesomer?

it being released in europe :3

Churly said on Apr. 28, 2010

If the Merman O2 tank remains, that proves Mother 3’s unrelease in America had nothing to do with the Magypsies, or the O2 tanks

oink! said on Apr. 28, 2010

Churly: Well, that would be true, assuming the mermen don’t suggestively blow oxygen into Kappa’s mouth with quivering, bloated red lips.

I mean, the dude is an aquatic creature, technically.

im buying this just because it has Mother 3 cameos. 😀

starstormer said on Apr. 28, 2010

When I first heard of this game I didn’t think it would get a US release. I don’t own a DSi but my sister does, maybe I can convince her to get the game when it comes out.
I think I’m buying for the mother 3 cameos too and since it sounds like a decent game.

Gabriel said on Apr. 28, 2010

I wonder if Brownie Brown purposefully put those cameos into the game hoping it would be released in America (and other places) as a short of shout-out to us Mother fans.

FuzzyPicklez said on Apr. 28, 2010

I bet after this is released people are going to start calling Nintendo again…

What source is this announcement from?

MG said on Apr. 28, 2010

I’m definitely getting this when it comes out.

im guna b super pisst off i they take the mother 3 stuff out

Paul said on Apr. 29, 2010

Why would they edit out the Mother 3 stuff in this game, when they didn’t remove the snake-head from Link’s whip in Phantom Hourglass?

Paul said on Apr. 29, 2010

I mean, Spirit Tracks?

aipe said on Apr. 29, 2010

Suddenly the DSi is no longer a waste of money

yut said on Apr. 30, 2010

Beacuse a snake whip, isnt a copy-pasterd sprite directly taken from M3 I dont even consider the snake whip arefrence, to be honest.

sigh said on Apr. 30, 2010

Am I the only person that feels legitimately jilted that they won’t release Mother 3 but they’ll release this without a second thought?

Paul said on Apr. 30, 2010

@yut: So if that merman thing’s lips were changed from pink to blue (for example), would it no longer be a Mother 3 reference? After all, it wouldn’t have been a sprite copy-pasted directly from Mother 3, no matter how recognizable it was.

i wanted to get this when you guys showed and i’d love to get it when it comes out in june (i’m too pumped for Super Mario Galaxy 2!)

Anonymous said on May. 5, 2010

What about Europe?
Any way to fool my Dsi to let it think that its American?

Forten042 said on May. 5, 2010

This game looks epic. Maybe I’ll play it as soon as they give the DSI a Game-Boy port.

That’ll probably be never though…

Earthbound Wisher said on Jun. 4, 2010

A Mother spinoff? Awesome!

Anonymous said on Jun. 12, 2010

I may download this for the sole fact that it’s Mother related. XD

J said on Jun. 14, 2010

So, when you get this game, go check out the big oyster shell and prepare to be disturbed. It’s not just a mask after all…

Catson said on Jun. 14, 2010

Everyone who gets this game do what J said!

Dan said on Jun. 15, 2010

I’ll get it once the 3DS comes out.

GoldenEevee said on Jun. 16, 2010

Will download it when I get a DSi

I think that Nintendo might not notice Mother 3 sprites like O2 machine, Ocho, or the Pigmask.
But… theres a slim chance of that happening

rainbowtrout said on Sep. 5, 2010

GOT IT THE OTHER DAY. or my bro did. seems like the cameos are limited to the title screen, but still pretty cool. -3-

SomeUser said on Feb. 14, 2011

I really don’t like the controls in this game (tried it on my friend’s DSi, I have no points). It’s quite aggravating to pause real quick to slide the screen up so I can keep moving. It’s also annoying because the arrow keys pause instead of move the camera. One thing that REALLY got me killed was that it interrupted lines when I didn’t want it to and left lines intact when I wanted it to interrupt. I gave up after the first level. It probably wasn’t worth however much it cost.

Suckish said on Feb. 27, 2011

Wonderful. Now if they could just release the rest of the game in english.

PKSTARMAN said on Sep. 25, 2011

I got 3 months ago. The game is stupidly hard. It has 4 worlds with 4 levels each. Also there are 3 minigames that also has around 12 stages with 4 levels each. There are a lot of collectibles too. This game is worth some 800 points, but because there are not a lot of Mother fans around, the price of 500 points is fine.

Mumphadumf said on Oct. 4, 2011

I wish this game was out in Australia…

TheMr.SaturnGuy said on Nov. 8, 2011

Even though this game bursts full of cameos, I will never forget how insanely difficult this game is.
