Tips for Buying EarthBound

March 20th, 2010 | EarthBound, Events, Merchandise

Our good friend Kyo (who lives in Japan and often does a lot of cool stuff that I talk about on this site) sent word of a special event that’s going to take place in Japan on April 3. I don’t understand what’s going on fully, but apparently at the Namco Wonder Park Hero’s Base there’s going to be a super-giant Mr. Saturn and some other stuff that’s in limited quantities.

I don’t have time to translate the whole thing, and I don’t quite understand what kind of event this is (are people able to win this giant Mr. Saturn?) but here’s a summary of what it says:

The event takes place on April 3, 2010 at the Namco Wonder Park Hero’s Base (Lazona Kawasaki Plaza 4th floor). A super-giant Mr. Saturn (actually, could be multiple Mr. Saturns, not sure) is scheduled to appear twice for 30 minutes at 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm.

When it appears, limited edition Mr. Saturn stickers will also be distributed (quantities limited), and between 1:30 and 5:00 some prizes being released this summer will be shown off (probably not MOTHER-related though) and a bunch of prizes from the past will be available in crane games (again, probably not MOTHER-related).

Like I said, I don’t know if the super-giant Mr. Saturn is even winnable or if it’s just there for show or what. If anyone has more info/insight about that, let me know.

As for why I call them super-huge when there’s already a giant Mr. Saturn plush, it’s because this new “super-giant” one is 150 centimeters tall (almost 5 feet) compared to the 45 centimeters of the other “giant” ones.

Here’s what one of those giant ones from last year looks like:

(2009 Mr. Saturn, 45 centimeters)

Now triple that size and you’re STILL not at the size of the new super-giant Mr. Saturn!

I’ll have more info as it comes in!

that Saturn should have rings and an orbit being that big. Impressive.

JoeShmoe said on Mar. 20, 2010

Wholly smokes, that IS a big Saturn. Five feet? Almost as tall as me… Where would that go in the house? XD

Poe said on Mar. 20, 2010

Whoa man, I want to see a picture of someone standing next to that new one. Is Kyo planning to go to the event?

It’s probable gonna be like $200 or $300 (or 20,000 or 30,000 yen)

This thing is HUGE! I wish I could be at that event.

Wow that is awesome. This makes my desire for a big Mr.Saturn skyrocket but…I think I’ll hold off for a while anyways.

Sweet-Michiko said on Mar. 20, 2010

I can’t imagine something like that being mass produced.. even still, that’s awesome, hope to see pictures from the event.

neonix said on Mar. 20, 2010

Wow, that’s awesome. I want one of those sticker sheets. I REALLY like how it says MOTHER2. Being so used to seeing M3 on the most recent merch, it’s really nice to see M2 isn’t done being promoted 🙂

Vanasto said on Mar. 20, 2010

Um… it sounds to me like there’s gonna be somebody walking around inside a super-giant dosei-san suit and hanging out for photos. I would seriously doubt that it’s merchandise! Since there’s been some interesting stuff going around for auction, so I can see how your minds would go there…

LucasTizma said on Mar. 20, 2010

Woooow. 😀 Yeah, do we know anyone who’s gonna be there? Can they be convinced to snag as much MOTHER-related promotional materials for sale to, uh, certain high bidders? O.o LOL

Aquas said on Mar. 20, 2010

UBER SATURN! That’s awesome.

Pkhypernova said on Mar. 20, 2010

That’s probably the size of Boney!

Kyoo said on Mar. 20, 2010

yay! still not bigger than pigmask’s Saturn

Kyoo said on Mar. 20, 2010

wait how big is pigmask’s Mr.Saturn again? the one with the tenda on top.

Saturnome said on Mar. 20, 2010

Finally, a Mr.Saturn you can ladder on!
Is it the real size of a Mr. Saturn?

Saturnome said on Mar. 20, 2010

Wait no, 5 feet is too much. You can’t even ladder on it. It will eat you.

LakituAl said on Mar. 20, 2010

@Saturnome

You’re wrong, as Mr. Saturn only drinks coffee and eats Peanut Cheese bars with Piggy Jelly. However, as soon as this one sneezes you’ll ZOOM! across the room and BOING against the wall.

WhatsHerFace said on Mar. 20, 2010

@Saturnome:
But, aren’t Mr. Saturns smaller than most people?! It’s the size of like, five Mr. Saturns! IT’S A ONE SATURN LADDER!

Soiherduliekeb said on Mar. 20, 2010

5-5-5-5 feet Tall!?!?

Kyoo said on Mar. 20, 2010

I need this. I wonder how much shipping would cost. I imagine all that stuffing weighs a lot

PKSTARMAN said on Mar. 20, 2010

Holy…cow!
5-5-5-5 feet?! o_0

PK Coffee said on Mar. 20, 2010

How big is a real (in the series) Mr. Saturn?

JoeShmoe said on Mar. 20, 2010

@PK Coffee: In Smash Bros., Mr. Saturn can easily be picked and tossed around by all the playable characters… Granted, I wouldn’t use that for scale, but knowing Itoi collaborating with the games it’s probably a pretty close estimate to how big they really are.

…In short, big enough to be held in the palm of your hand, probably somewhere between baseball- and football-sized… give or take. That’s how I’ve always seen them. XD

Anzon said on Mar. 20, 2010

@PK Coffee: Basing on Earthbound, I would say half the size of a thirteen year old boy. Two feet? Two and a half, maybe? That’s just my take, though.

neonix said on Mar. 21, 2010

The Mr. Saturns in Smash Bros. don’t fit in anyone’s palm (except maybe Bowser). Pic for reference: http://files.fobby.net/0000/4fb1/20d9575d4532673e_IMAGE.jpg

They look a little taller than half of Ness, so I’d say around 2.5 or 3 feet tall.

LucasTizma said on Mar. 21, 2010

Awww, I love Mr. Saturn. <3 I always go to grab him in Smash Bros. when he appears!

neonix said on Mar. 21, 2010

Me too. Mr. Saturn is the catalyst of 35% of my Smash Bros. deaths!

PSInesslove93 said on Mar. 23, 2010

zomggg… i would love that 😀 dang though. that super-giant saturn is as tall as i am then lmao
