A while back, I stumbled upon a Japanese auction for a Japanese MOTHER 2 phone card. Until then, I never even knew they existed, so it was a pretty cool find. I posted it during one of the weekly round-ups and regular site visitor and EarthBound merchandise collector neonix won it:

(note: neonix blurred out the bar codes on purpose, it doesn’t look smeared like that normally 😛 )
The phone card art is by Benimaru Itoh, the character designer for MOTHER 2 and EarthBound 64. He’s also done a lot of other stuff for Nintendo too. He also did the MOTHER 2 manga called “Ness’ Great Adventure”, which is a retelling of the story in EarthBound, and where this card gets its art.
Anyway, the manga is pretty interesting and pretty rare, but this phone card is MUCH more rare. I don’t know how many were made, but probably only a handful at most. So if you ever come across one, try to get it if you can!

@Carl, who knows, but better safe than sorry, right? I’m assuming they don’t expire since the card make no mention of an expiration date.
@Javi, A Mario? It looks like just a yellow “M” to me.
I just really want to know that they’re fighting in the middle.
I think it’s a Lesser Mook

Artwork is really cute for this card. Looks like an old cartoon series. 😀
I never knew Mother phonecards were released. Little do I know about the merchandise. Have there ever been any other different designs for Mother phonecards? Or is this the only one?
Really nice picture. I bit frightened by the monster’s mouth looks like THAT, but I can look past that!
Oh, man! These are really cute!
I love Benimaru Itoh’s stuff. I think he used to do the old Howard and Nester comics, didn’t he?

I lost my appetite…
…Awesome!

Wow, Neonix, you’re on fire lately with the EB merch. When do you open the museum? 🙂
That’s a pretty interesting interpretation of Giygas… I also love the Shambler in the corner.

@WhatsHerFace:
I know he did the Super Metroid and StarFox comics for Nintendo Power. Dunno about Howard and Nester, though, I think that was an American artist.

Now that is a SLICK style.
You know…?
The eye in the center reminds me of the Devil’s Machine.
It also had those things that looks like pipes, but the mouth certainty doesn’t make it look like the Devil’s Machine.
Maybe Apple Kid used this to let Ness know that the Eraser Eraser was ready…

Oh, NOW Benimaru Itoh’s cool. *sarcasm mode*

@Crono Breaker:
That’s Benimaru Itoh’s design for Giygas in the manga this image comes from. He’s this weird cycloptic cyclone-y thing with a vertical mouth.
Wow, that’s a cool style I’ve never seen Mother done in before. I love the facial expressions and the simpler drawings in the background, like that Starman.
But that thing in the middle, a Lesser Mook or Giygas or whatever it’s supposed to be, is pretty disturbing. Reminds me of the monster in the Watchmen comic.
It’s probably not a Lesser Mook.
If you look to the left of Ness’ bat, you’ll see an actual Lesser Mook which is much smaller and completely resembles the ones from the game.
i agree with carl. cool piece of art. is that the heavy bazooka that jeff has? cool.

Well, if you look up a few comments, kenisu mentioned its Itoh’s design for Giygas. So I’ll take his word for it.
someone got noticed that the thing in the center mouth look like…..err……a vagina….?
Why are there TWO ribbons in Paula’s hair? I thought she only had one.
I like the anime giygas on the phone card better than the one in the game. It fits with the whole alien profile. The one from the game however… demonic.
It’s a 15-year-old Japanese phone card; is there really any point to blurring out the bar code?
Anyway, I think the coolest thing about this rare find is the picture. It’s a piece I’ve never seen before. Cool.
