Thanks for these! They’re fantastic! Mother music just has this amazing nostalgia feel to them, I love it so.

No problem at all. I’m glad you like them.

Mother 3 has excellent music and it is a pleasure for me to deconstruct it, learn it, and rearrange it.

I may do a few moth mother 3 songs, maybe even some EB songs. I have some in mind but it takes me a lot of time to decide… lol.

I hope next time to do a better job and improve the quality of my playing and recording! 😀

>_> …Somehow i wrote “a few MOTH mother 3 songs” instead of “a few MORE mother 3 songs”…

What type of music do moths listen to? Do moths play video games?

Sadly, my heart tells me that Nintendo of Mothland will localize Mother 3 before Nintendo of America does… Lucky moths…

I enjoyed these pieces quite a bit. Especially the Shower Time Ballad. It’s been a while since I’ve played Mother 3 so its hard to tell if a lot of it is improvisational but either way I enjoyed it. Keep up the great work, you have talent.

@ abjerk:

Thanks for the encouraging words! I’m glad you liked it. =)

About the “Shower Time Ballad”, some of it is altered and improvised but of course some of it is pretty accurate to the game version.

The main melody of the song and the bass line are pretty close to the original. There is a bit of music theory to that, which I’ll touch upon a little bit. Basically, the highest and the lowest musical “voices” (think; soprano and bass) are extremely important to the identity of the song. Too much alteration here can make the song, well, a different song. Because of that, I tend to try to keep the melody and the bass line very close (at least at the start of the song) so that people can recognize the song right from the start.

My goal with these isn’t really to mimic the original versions completely, because there’s no way in hell I can out-do the original composer. lol. So, obviously, I don’t use sheet music or anything when making these. After choosing which song I want to work on, I give it a few listens to get a sense of the overall feel and form, figure out the bass line and melody, and then take it from there by myself.

With a little knowledge of music theory, I decide what chords to use. Because I generally take some liberties here, the chord progression can vary quite a bit from the original. This may strike some people who are very very familiar with the songs as slightly different than what they are used to. But, to me, I think it keeps it interesting and it’s my intention to keep my version of the song different and new.

Of course, on top of that, I do improvised solos for both keyboard and guitar. Shower Time Ballad was written as a jazz ballad, and I kept my version that way. This of course dictates the style of my solos for both keyboard and guitar. I’m not a great pianist (pretty much self taught and I just use my knowledge of music theory to do what I can) but I have some jazz guitar experience. I don’t write out any of the solos, I just keep doing take after take until i get one that feels right.

So really, it’s more of less 50% accurate. I take some liberties and add my own flavor to it. But I also really value the source material and want to make it shine out. I’m sure some people can notice how my version differs from the original. But to me, that’s a good thing, and I hope people enjoy both my version and the original version. 🙂

Thanks again! Please continue to watch my youtube account for more songs in the coming weeks. :]
