EarthBound as a Cult Phenomenon

A good while ago, I posted about a Saturn Valley music box that showed up on Yahoo Auctions Japan.
Well, resident collector man LucasTizma snagged it shortly after I posted about it. It recently arrived, and he was cool enough to make a video of it playing:
It’s a little underwhelming I think, but still kind of neat. I definitely agree that something like Eight Melodies in a music box would be pretty cool, though.

P.S. The reason why I’m not logged in is because I’m in Switzerland right now, and I didn’t memorize the password because it was too weird T_T

Is this video image mirrored or is that super mario shirt iron on backwards? It’s kind of weird-in’ me out. Hahaha! I second the 8 melodies music box. Good luck finding the person who made it LT.
…can I call you LT?
That’s pretty dang cool I must say. Though, what an odd choice in song for a music boX!
I’ve seen those type of music boxes at the local toy store. (Not Mother 2, obviously, but….)
An Eight Melodies one would be pretty cool. Though given how small those are it would have to be a bigger one to be able to put all of the melody bits on it.

I am insanely jealous. I wonder if there’s someone out there who takes commissions for custom music boxes? I can think of many game songs that I’ve always wanted in music box form.

Just watched again to show someone and realized you said you’re in Boston?! That’s awesome. I am too. Guessing you’ll be at PAX East next month then? You should bring some awesome EB swag to show off. XD
I tried a quick Google search for ‘custom music box’ and ‘how to make a music box.’ Nothing too informative, but I was hasty. I think I’ll delve further into this when I’m home later.
That box is really cool though, and Eight Melodies version would really be something; the song fits the impression of a music box perfectly.

Ooooh yeah, Eight Melodies would be rockin’! I probably won’t rest until I have one made. 😛
@Chrissii: Ya, I just moved up here. 🙂 I think the company I work for is attending PAX East with press passes, so _maybe_ I can go with them. I’m kinda overwhelmed by large groups of strangers, and I really would only want to visit the Fangamer.net people anyway… We’ll see. 🙂

@neonix Yeah, I tried Google searching “custom music box”, “+commissions”, and “+maker” and am mostly coming up with people who make the wooden box part and just buy the generic-corny-ballad-tunes from some wholesale company. 😐 If I find anything more fruitful I’ll let you (and everyone else, for that matter) know 😛
@LucasTizma Well the more the merrier, I always say. Then again, I’m a sucker for big events like this. I’ve never been to PAX in particular, but I’ve been to a bunch of anime conventions. The Hynes convention center (where PAXEast is being held) is really quite big though, so even though it holds so many folks, it’s rather roomy. I’m pretty claustrophobic (sp?) and have other stranger-related-anxieties but I tend to be OK at events full of likeminded individuals XD Sorry for rambling but hope to see you there regardless!
Weird, on the wikipedia page for music boxes, Earthbound is mentioned. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_box
Hmm… I don’t know about Mother 1, but what is said on Wikipedia is definitely incorrect for Earthbound. You get a sound stone in Earthbound, and not a musical box.
I was under the impression that the song in Mother 1 was memorized and then sung later, but I could be wrong. Maybe the mistake is from one of the early tunes, which came from a music box, right? (I haven’t played Earthbound Zero beyond an early stage of the game; I’m going to wait for the Mother 1 part of the Mother 1+2 translation so it will be easier and much better translated.)
I wish I could go to PAXEast, but with work, classes, and no one to go with… blah. 🙁

That wiki is probably just poorly worded. In MOTHER, the first melody comes from a music box which is inside Ninten’s sister’s doll. In MOTHER 2/EarthBound, Ness receives the Sound Stone. Someone probably just got confused and merged all that information together. XD
Well it seems some really cool guy went ahead and fixed that wiki page 😉
I actually fix music boxes as a hobby. You want to search “custom movement” not just a general “music box”. Custom movements are made in bulk. They are expensive and most places craft them from a midi. You might run into issues with the company asking for information regarding the music (as in copyrights info)
If you want to make your own, it’s cheaper just to buy a hand crank music box that uses punched cards and wind it yourself… or you could go for dissecting a box already and making your own cylinder out of baked polymer clay.
Yes, the Eight Melodies would be extremely awesome, and BTW, to me, that didn’t really sound like the Saturn Valley theme. Hm, I guess it’s just me.
I tried to register for the site, but my IP address is banned. Why? 🙁

You should be able to register now. Spam bots were pounding the registration stuff hard a good while back, so I had to turn security way up and even turned off registration altogether for a while. Looks like your IP block just happened to be in some big blacklist database by sheer bad luck.
Mato, just so you know(if you even care),I(for now) just comment around here under the name Zoom!,but think of me as a semi-account.(one that’s not registered, but is kinda like one that is.)
Lucas, you’re the best 😀
