Five EarthBounds

A few months ago an EarthBound Zero prototype cart showed up on eBay (info here). The auction was taken down, but now the item is back on eBay here.

There are only a few known EarthBound Zero prototype carts in the wild, all of which I’ve documented here. I still need to update a few details about a few of the things on there, I keep forgetting to. Anyway, this particular cart is one of the known copies.
So if you’re a collector, this is your chance to score one of the rarest pieces of EarthBound-related merchandise out there!
Thanks to Alex for the tip!

Cue a bunch of self-centered people posting about how this Earthbound proto is a waste of money and feeling entitled to tell other people what they should and shouldn’t do with their money, as well.
Again. Seriously it seems like someone puts one of these on ebay every few months.

Love seeing that complex circuit board. After seeing what the inside of the reproduction carts look like, I can appreciate the real one that much more.

Just out of curiosity, since I don’t have a good understanding of what a collector’s priorities are: if the battery isn’t original stock, does that decrease the cart’s value? Not saying it isn’t, mind; I’m just curious.
lol i am going to place a bid for $100 i hope i get it but i probly wony 🙁

@sigh GTFO, By this point you should know if you can’t appreciate an EB collector’s point of view, then what is your purpose for being on this sight, is it that you hate EarthBound and want to taunt people who wish to collect all of it’s merchandise? Or, are you just being a presumptuous jerk? You can’t mock someone else’s hobby of collecting something, because everybody’s different, so why mock other people for their interests?.
In other words, Dang it Mato! Now with this posted people like Carl, and LucasTizma will try to win this… This doesn’t please me *growls*
ninji – reading comprehension fail. sigh was actually defending your position but you’re so quick to go on the attack that you apparently didn’t realize it.
but if you want me to play the role of troll i can do that. it’s more fun that way right?
apparently the “collector’s point of view” is pretty fickle since they keep putting these back up for sell.

I agree with Ninji, appreciate how other people think and respect it; otherwise why would you come on this site?
Jeagle, I’m surprised you didn’t bother to read the post that was one post above you. People can be lulzworthy sometimes. 🙂
Bid a pretty penny on it. I’m currently winning for the hour. Will go for much much more.
and also i come to this site because i’ve loved earthbound for 14 years or so and i also enjoyed mother 3. i’m interested in what is going on surrounding the series. that doesn’t change my opinion of people who pay tons of money for cheap pieces of paper (yes i realize the irony of money being mostly cheap pieces of paper)
i follow a baseball team pretty closely too but i still thought it was dumb when people paid a lot of money to buy dirt from the pitcher’s mound.
as far as respecting how other people think – this is how i think. respect it.
Do any of the owners of those prototype cartridges EVER comment or take photos of the protos themselves?
I mean, they just buy it and then it disappears from the face of the internet, only to appear again on yet another auction some months later lol
Yea, Ninjii, sigh is on your side, haha.
@sigh, There’s a pretty big difference between a real prototype cartridge and a cheap shelf display ad. Keep that in mind. Note that people weren’t going nuts about unopened EB boxes and other high roller auctions that have been posted here in the past; just that display card–because it is a cheap, duplicable item which the seller has multitudes of.
I’d rather blow my cash on this prototype cart.
Anyway, I’m really hoping the comments here don’t get to a point where there’s a flame war every time a piece of merch is posted.
It would be nice if everyone could respect how others think in exchange for expecting their thoughts to be respected. Some people don’t justify buying things that don’t have a functional use to them, while others get a lot of enjoyment out of collecting. And some collectors, like myself, have a limit to what they will pay for a certain item. It’s all personal opinion; respect it, move on.
As for the prototype here, if it doesn’t get pulled by ebay again, I predict $1500 or more.

*twitches* Do I dare risk certain marital antagonism by bidding on this?
Yes, I believe it is my duty. At least I can say I tried before it rockets up in price.

What kind of money is GBP? What country is that?
![]() | Mato said on Feb. 9, 2010 |
British Pounds.
![]() | The Great Morgil said on Feb. 9, 2010 |
Oh, i thought it was like Game Boy Pesos or something :3
Haha, I was looking for Earthbound on British eBay (been trawling about for it for ages) and I was pretty surprised to find this… 😛
@The Great Morgil 😐
also, rofl
@The Great Morgil again: I clicked on the link to your site and AVG detected malware. Might wanna look into that?
^You probably shouldn’t because that just makes it more expensive for the other people who are actually trying to buy it…
![]() | Carl said on Feb. 9, 2010 |
…Not unless there’s only a single bidder willing to pay more than $700, which I seriously doubt will the case, based on the amount for which these prototypes have sold in the past.
Y’know what? I think I might actually make a few bids on this one. And if I don’t win… I can say I tried.
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 9, 2010 |
TARGET: Acquired! All targeting scanners are locked on. Annular confinement at 53.3436%. Preparing to energize!
It is like 203 $ right now and it has 4 days left
something is saying it will get over 300$ XD
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 9, 2010 |
Oh yeah I’m pretty sure it will. I locked in my max bid at $750 USD. On a budget ’cause I just moved and spent a lot of money. :-\
I would so buy it but based on my income I won’t be able to afford it until the year 200X.
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 10, 2010 |
200X, for any non-negative integer value of X less than 10 , has already passed, my friend. 🙂
@I am a loser: My eBay name is, not surprisingly, lucastizma. 🙂
Damn, I was gunna be a smartass and point out the flaw in 200X, but LucasTizma beat me to it.
Hey guys let’s just all pitch in a buck to win it then send it to Mato
Great idea! I’m actually surprised why this community, the leading EB community, doesn’t have it’s own copy of the EB0 prototype. That’s what I’ll do if I win it… after enjoying it myself for a while of course! 😉
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 10, 2010 |
Well if I happen to win it, I’ll be glad to share it the community in whatever way I can, but I’d like to hold on to it myself for safe keeping. 🙂

Hm, that’s odd. It just goes to website i visit practically everyday. There’s nothing malicious about it. I too have AVG and it’s never said anything about it.
I’m not biding intil the last sec to snipe it with my 2000 bucks, I’ll give it to starmen.net once I’m done using it.
@Ninji
I’m not joking, I got alot of money when my grapa
died :((he was rich)so I have alot of money.
Wishing lots of luck to all the bidders trying to get their hands on this gem. Hope whoever does win gives it a nice, warm home. I think I would be nervous to even touch the game with it’s high value. Imagine dropping it…
Good gravy! It has more than doubled in price over the course of today!
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 11, 2010 |
Yikes. I’m stopping at $750 in that case. D: I’ll have to save up my money for the next time it comes around. 🙂
Isn’t it interesting how your Grandfather left you this money and you’re getting Earthbound Zero with it? Kinda goes with the story somewhat…
![]() | Mr. Nosy said on Feb. 11, 2010 |
…and kind of like Mother 3, if you think…
Wait, BroBuzz, if that’s really true… then s*** I’ll never get any good EB merchandise, because people like you and Lucas have so much money to spend on your free will 🙁 Speaking of which, how the hell does Lucas manage to buy so much merchandise? What kind of awesome job does he have that gives him this kind of money?!
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 11, 2010 |
Ha ha. I’m an iPhone software engineer, but I only JUST recently got a job where they actually pay me a good salary… So all my debt I accrued buying MOTHER stuff be finally be able to be paid off. ^_^
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 11, 2010 |
And to be fair, most (80%) of the stuff I buy is on Yahoo! Auctions Japan, and it’s not like everyone else doesn’t have a fair chance at stuff. 😛
However, I promise that if I’m ever filthy rich, I’ll buy up ALLLLLL the MOTHER/EB stuff I can get my hands on and resell the ridiculously expensive stuff at a fair price. 🙂 I’m all about the community.
Lucas, did you snag your Mother 2 flier from YAJ as well? I have been looking week after week but no luck. Any hints on the search terms?
I love how Ninji is completely ignoring the fact that he ripped into sigh when sigh was in fact saying the same exact thing he was. Saying mean things to people is totally forgivable when you lack basic sentence comprehension, ha ha!
@ Ninji Yup, I don’t have alot of mother/earthbound stuff, I only have earthbound! I onlyplan to buy this is because it’s rare and I gto a boat-load of money from my granpa.:(
Wow there’s one for 6800 yen, I paid a lot more than that for my M2 flyer… But it was indeed totally worth it. It sits on my wall to be stared at all day long.
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 12, 2010 |
How am I still the highest bidder (after a bid retraction)? O.o I expect this to change nearer to the end of the auction I suppose. 🙂 Surely this will go for at least $1000.
@LucasTizma.
Your going DOWN for this bid! I’ve never lost a bid EVER!
Lucas Tizma would u give me the prototype
and i will send it back to ya after i beat the game
Deal???
![]() | LucasTizma said on Feb. 14, 2010 |
Well if I had the money, I’d easily bid up to $2000 for this. Can’t though. $750’s my max. 🙁
ACK!! Bidding ended at US $1,187.56!!! HOLY CRAP!!! Lucas didn’t win SHIT!!! 🙁
Did BroBuzz win??!! If so, then you’ll generously donate it to me when you’re done right? 😉
![]() | Roo said on Feb. 14, 2010 |
No, actually I won it.
I’ll try to determine if that’s a good thing or not after my head stops spinning from how fast my bank account just depleted.
NOOOO I got sniped!!! I was SOOO Close to geting it then BAM I got sniped!!! Well I tryed.

![]() | Roo said on Feb. 14, 2010 |
Sorry BroBuzz, I had to. 🙂
And God, Mister Crosser, don’t remind me.
I don’t know if anyone saw this yet… but the guy who bought this prototype made a nice youtube video showing it off, two videos, 10 minutes each, his youtube name is clanofthegreywolf… check it out guys, by the way i recently downloaded a massive ROM pack that included the unhacked version of the prototype, with no zero in the title, i have the hacked zero version as well.
