Tips for Buying EarthBound

February 11th, 2010 | EarthBound, Uncommon Knowledge

It’s been a long time since I updated the MOTHER 2 vs. EarthBound stuff, we were stuck on Winters #2 for many months. The next section is Summers #1.

There are some interesting things in there, plus some of the detailed, nitpicky things. Of most interest is probably the player naming screen stuff and a sign left behind by Pokey. Then there’s the usual alcohol reference changes and all that too, of course.

Updating this made me remember just how much time each page takes to make 😯

Great stuff, this is my favourite section to be sure! 🙂

It’s going to sound silly, but could a possible reason for the newlywed omission be to avoid any suggestion of interrupting honeymoon hankey-pankey? Ha ha. 😉

Oh man, I love these things! When you’re done, I really hope someone makes a hack that reverts every single one of these changes! Well, the bad ones at least… I don’t want NPCs to start speaking Japanese at me.

You said it takes you a really long time to make these pages, do you play through both versions simultaneously every time you update? I assumed you had a list already written down, and updating was just a matter of putting them on a web page.

Also in the newlywed section, would the “small medals” be a reference to the Mini or TinyMedals from Dragon Quest? I’ve only played the DS remakes, so I don’t know if they’re a post DQVII addition or not.

@Psychomax, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a hack that did it before. I remember it mainly because in the changes they mentioned not changing the pencil/octopus statue because the octopus makes no sense in the US.

But I bet they missed a lot of the nitpicky things that Mato documents. And if that’s the case, I might take on that challenge to make an EB-to-M2 hack when Mato completes his journey 😛

Great job, as always! The alt tags are, also, once again hilarious. 🙂

Now get back to work on that mother 1 retranslation!

Mato said on Feb. 11, 2010

Tis on hold for a while, as I’ve mentioned in the past.

santiagoff said on Feb. 11, 2010

That excuse me phrase should have been replaced with japanese or any other european language. It would have made more sense :/

Darien said on Feb. 11, 2010

The Small Medals were first added to the Dragon Quest series in Dragon Quest 4, so, yes, I’d say that probably is a reference to those games, perhaps redacted in the English version because the translators didn’t understand it.

I, personally, think Ram Raisin is a bit funnier than if they just called him Rum Raisin. Has a bit of a stronger Egyptian vibe to it (since it parallels with “Ramses” and so forth) while still a pretty clear reference to rum raisin.

I never read the Magic Cake lady’s text that way at all. I always read it as “I used all [of my] leftover ingredients” — which is to say, she used everything she had left.

Onigarayaki is generally shrimp (sometimes lobster or crab, but traditionally shrimp, I believe) with the shell split open but not removed, basted with teriyaki sauce, and then grilled until the shell is crispy.

Leaving that line in Japanese would have been completely lunatic. It would have looked like nothing so much as the translators just missed a line. It would make very faintly more sense to translate it into some random European language, but bear in mind that the main impact of that change would be to make it look more clever fifteen years later on a commentary blog written by a translator, at the expense of the people playing the game having any idea what it said. Not a great trade, really.

@Mato

I know..I just would like you to get back to it 🙂

Maybe writing that “Excuse me.” line in French would have worked. “Excuse-moi.” would have somewhat kept the fanci-ness (especially since French always seems to be seen as the fanciest of fancy) while being easily understood by US players since it isn’t uncommon for people to say “excuse moi” here and the meaning can easily be inferred as well.

However, I always felt like that lady was saying it in a rude way. Maybe there is a certain depth to her simple “Excuse me.” anyway. It could be seen that she is so rich and fancy, she has no need to make that apparent or say anything to a group of kids. Maybe that’s why I first took her as a snooty person.

Yeah, finally back to this! I’ve been waiting a while for the Summers update.

Great to see another one of these. I like ’em alot.

Komaru said on Feb. 11, 2010

That Japanese “excuse me” line is pretty genius, I must say.
But I guess the localizers were sort of stuck, so I don’t blame them for the somewhat bland line they put in its place.

You make it seem like the translators of EarthBound were pretty good for the time it was done. I’d like to see what you think as a professional translator once you’ve finsished this.

Husky said on Feb. 12, 2010

The “uuuu…manbo!” line makes me think of a pun on woman/mambo, personally, but even by Mother standards that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense 😛 Then again it also sounds like it could be a musical reference, perhaps to someone like Perez Prado (though I haven’t the foggiest idea how popular he was or is in Japan).

Sir Ilpalazzo said on Feb. 12, 2010

I know this is kind of minor, but I was just reading through some of the older ones, and I noticed there’s sort of a formatting problem with Everdred’s speech in the Fourside 2 section. It’s like bricks of text instead of being side-by-side like the other speech comparisons, although maybe it was supposed to be like that.

These updates are seriously my favorites. M2EB was one of my favorite websites! Thanks for remaking these, and for keeping the classic feel of the original :3

kenisu3000 said on Feb. 13, 2010

Yeah, I wondered why they didn’t just have her say “Pardonnez-moi” or something like that.

No doubt the medals bit is a reference to Dragon Quest. There’s “DraQue” references all over MOTHER merchandise, like the guidebooks.

And I encountered that Rum Raisin/Ram Raisin thing myself when I was doing research on the game for my Halloween fic a few months ago. The small, barely noticeable removal of an alcohol reference made me chuckle inside. 🙂

So anyway Mato, I’m happy to see another update! I’ve always looooved “MOTHER 2 to EarthBound and Back Again”.

Strawberry Tofu said on Feb. 13, 2010

They probably had you put your name in romaji so it could show up in the credits under “player”, where it would match everything else.

Giovanni said on Feb. 16, 2010

^ Yes, that was certainly the primary reason.

And that “Uuuuuh … mambo!” dog must be a reference to the last word and refrain of the old song Mambo Italiano. Serves to further distinguish the two halves of Summers; the iconic crowded Italian port town Toto, and the Carillon resort with its more distinctly French affectations.

Is the “small medal” quote a reference to the Dragon Quest games?
