Tips for Buying EarthBound

January 13th, 2010 | EarthBound, Misc.

Since I’m still way, way behind with the update queue, here’s another big batch of mini-updates or updates I missed in my busy haste.

Check it out, there’s a lot of EarthBound stuff here!

The Origin of the Save Frog – submitted by Chewy

Sorry if you already blogged about this! I can’t remember seeing an article on it if you did. Here’s a youtube video that plays the song Furimukeba Kaeru by Akiko Yano, which Itoi said in that interview was his inspiration for the save frogs in M3.

I pulled the quote from the interview: “I’ve written a song called Furimukeba Kaeru. When someone fails, a frog comes along and says, “Oh, it’s nothing to worry about.” The lyrics show, hey, you’re being told this by a frog. It’s obviously not worth being that upset about. It’s a frog telling you this, what more do you want? (laughs) That’s where it comes from.”

And I did a rough translation of the lyrics (though it’s a little tough to retain Itoi’s touching message in English when he writes such silly things)

If You Turn Around, A Frog
Laundry dangling under the blue sky
Cleaner than the white clouds
It’s adorable and poignant laundry
But a sudden rain falls
The laundry is soaking wet and miserable
I’m sad, oh, so sad, but then
“It’ll all work out,” a voice says
I turn around to a frog, the voice is a frog’s
If I’m told by a frog, what else can I do
If I’m told by a frog, I can’t help but laugh
A bright yellow round fried egg
Happily enclosed in its egg whites
A delicious, beautiful fried egg
But suddenly it breaks
The fried egg collapses to a gooey mess
I’m sad, oh, so sad, but then
“It’ll be delicious,” a voice says
I turn around to a frog, the voice is a frog’s
If I’m told by a frog, I guess I’ll surrender
And be like the frog, and laugh

(Tangentially) EB-Related: Itoi on Iron Chef – submitted by Kevin Nereza

Went browsing through an old message board earlier and stumbled across this:

It’s Shigesato Itoi, guest-judging on an episode of Iron Chef. I guess it’s not REALLY EB-significant, but I thought it was interesting, and (weirdly) a very positive thing to watch. Anyway, take care, hope you’re doing well, looking forward to the Mother 1+2 Translation!

Mario Paint, APE inc thing – submitted by MetroidMan

Hey sorry about the double message but I forgot to include the url at the last second. I put it in then I hit send but it might have been too late so heres the link, http://gonintendo.com/?p=79123. If you already got it, then just ignore this haha. Later man.

Yume Nikki – submitted by Bowser

Hey, just an idea:

How about making a post about Yume Nikki, many things in it are inspired by the MOTHER series (a whole area looking like EB0 for example).

I’m not sure if many people have heard about it.

Amazing Mother 3 Medley on Mario Paint Composer – submitted by Raul Alvarez

I just found a video made on Mario Paint Composer (Using a diferent soundfont) that was … just … amazing

And its extremelly unknown ( Just 2000 vews)

I belive this counts like “Cool MOTHER/EB-related stuff that not many people have seen/heard/know about”

Bound Together – submitted by Rai

Hey Mato, I went through your audio category and couldn’t find an entry for Bound Together. It’s an older compilation, but a good one nonetheless. I had originally found it on OCRemix several years ago. You can find it here: http://www.wushuplaya.com/boundtogether/

If the torrent remains still alive (it still is as of right now), it’s a multi-disc set (48 songs, plus some bonus tracks) of EarthBound remixes. A good number of them can be found in OCRemix’s EB section: http://www.ocremix.org/game/earthbound-snes/remixes/

Hope you find all that interesting. It’s one of my favorite compilations.

Mato note: I do plan on making a big post/page for this at some point, which is why there hasn’t been anything about it yet. I’ve featured individual tracks from the album though.

Guitar and Bass EB songs – submitted by Adam Marshall

hey tomato, this is Dookie from starmen.net. I posted this on the music forum a while ago but no one really knows about this. its a all guitar and bass cover project ive been doing of earthbound songs.

anyway check it out, sorry about the lousy fake drums haha

Something interesting for Earthbound Central. – submitted by Sparky

Hi there. Let me start by saying that I love Earthbound Central, and I go there everyday. So, when I came across this, I thought you might like it.

You know how Earthbound isn’t on Virtual Console? Well, this guy has it on his Wii menu. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0bqk1DC_IA&feature=PlayList&p=536963E83C2DCD77&index=0 ) The video is a play through of the new Wii Punch-Out, but it shows his Wii Menu right at the beginning, and the Earthbound Logo is quite obviously there. The video’s date is May 19th, 2009, which is yesterday at the time I’m sending this message.

Now, I noticed this guy also has the Homebrew Channel. Can he use that to put the game on his wii? Is it even possible to make your own virtual console games and put them on your wii? Like with a Rom? Because Wii menu updates tend to block custom content or discs, I think ( he does have the newest update, as shown by the SD card menu in the corner).

I don’t know any of the details, but I wanted to let you know, cause this would be big news for Earthbound fans (I’m not just missing some big news or something, right?). I’ve checked Wikipedia, and earthbound isn’t on any of the Virtual Console game lists, so this kind of shocked me.

Hope you like this little bit of info!

Peanut Cheese Bar – submitted by Rob

Found this while looking for Rice Krispy Treats recipes. It reminded me of back in the late 90s, when my sister and I tried to recreate the legendary Earthbound snack. Among our failed attempts were: sticking peanuts into string cheese and mixing peanut satay sauce with melted Red Windsor cheese. We quick shortly after that.

I made this recipe and it’s… Well, I’m sure Mr. Saturn enjoys it. Actually, it’s not *bad* per se, just really different.

EarthBound: Coming of Age – submitted by Kyven

This essay is a few years old but I don’t think you’ve posted it here yet. It’s a nice little look at EarthBound from the online (now print) magazine GameSpite.

EB sample in a song? – submitted by Michael

A track on electronic musician Venetian Snares’ new album sounds like it has a sample from “Happy-Happy is Blue”. However, on second and third listen, I’m not sure if it is. In the least, it sounds very similar. When I first heard it, I immediately thought of Happy Happy Village.

The clip I’m speaking of starts at :38 and gradually swells in volume until :46 when it ends.

Music – submitted by Michael

Hey Tomato. I know you’re quite busy and everything, but I figured I would share my music and see if it was worthy of mention.

A few months ago I produced an 8 track “EP” of electronic music, 5 of the tracks containing audio clips from Earthbound. Everyone on the starmen.net forum that I’ve shown it to individually has said they’re really impressed. I made a thread for it in the Fan Forum, but I’m not sure if anyone bothered to download it.

Anyways, I figured it was worth a try. I would be honored if you took a listen! It’s (appropriately) titled ‘Mother EP’. 😀

Smaaaaaaash EarthBound Vid – submitted by Julian

This is by funniest, most strange but exciting song from japan i ever heard that one person even made flash *i think* of the World of Mother for Nico Nico

You will never get tired of this song =D

Shigesato Itoi’s essay about Akira Toriyama – submitted by linkdude

Hey! I found this interesting so I thought I’d share it with you. Apparently, back in 1995, Shigesato Itoi wrote an essay about the manga author Akira Toriyama for a museum showcasing his work.

Weird EarthBound glitch – submitted by Joshua Johnson

Dear EarthBound Central,

Somthing weird happend to my Earthbound cart today. A few days ago, I decided to start a new file on my earthbound cartridge. I havn’t had a long time to play recently, but just yesterday, I had a lot of free time, so I decided to get alot farther on my file. I got to about peaceful rest vally when I have to go to happy happy village, up until Winters when I play as Jeff. I saved at the telephone in the tent (Dont know if that might have anything to do with it or not) and called in a night. The next morning, I decided to proceed a little more, so when I turned on the game, my file was gone! Im not really mad, but more of confused.

Maybe I was playing to long and the cartridge failed to keep my file? Maybe the game glitched up? Maybe Ness’s Dad got mad I wasn’t taking a break from the game and decided to teach me a lesson? (Just kidding on the last one) But Im just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or is it just me?

(P.S: sorry for the long letter, but please write back)

Okay, that takes us halfway into June 2009, with at least a hundred or more still in the update queue. When I started the site I didn’t expect it to take off as quickly as it did 😯

@Joshua Johnson: I think I heard someone else say that their EarthBound save battery took a dump on them, too.
Gasp! I hope it’s not true! Have EB cart batteries finally had their day?! I’m running home to check mine…

..as soon as the work day is over. =(

sg_06 said on Jan. 13, 2010

@Sparky and the bit about Earthbound on some guy’s Wii:

If I recall correctly, it’s possible (but not necessarily easy) to switch out the ROM on a Virtual Console title. I assume you can also change the Channel image with relative ease.

Messing with channels like that can be dangerous unless you know what you’re doing, though.

I love Mini-Update Megathons, they’re so spontaneous! That Mario Paint Melody was awesome 😀

MarioFan3 said on Jan. 13, 2010

I actually played the complete Mother series on the Wii using homebrew, as that’s the closest I’ll ever get to playing the first two on a console.
It’s complicated but, yes, you can make games into channels, or just have the logo as a channel picture.
In fact, you can do anything to the system menu, change the music or the background, you can even move and delete the disc channel!

Although I personally don’t think making Mother2 a channel is worth it, once it’s run, it may brick your Wii, no matter, as you can just pull out the unbricking software on Homebrew, but all that hassle is a big waste of time and effort.
I suppose if you never launched it, it’ll be fine. I always used FCEUGX to play Mother, and SNES9X to play Mother2, so there isn’t really much point.
Seriously though, if you haven’t got Homebrew on your Wii, you’re missing out on so much!

Oh yeah, I have minor but Mother related news whilst on the subject!
In the USB Loader (Homebrew app that lets you boot Wii games without a disc) there is an EarthBound/Mother2 skin for it, looks nice and thought you might want to know.

It is quite possible to make your own VC games, but it is also rather difficult. There are several videos on YouTube of people who have made custom EB WADs, but I think this one is the most well-done:

He even modified the operations guide.

Hmm… That music file appears to be dead. Perhaps it is just me, but the link didn’t take me anywhere useful, or rather, it took me somewhere where I was told that it might have expired. Alas, I like finding more good EB tunes.

Cool update, though! The articles are always fun reads.

The Mario Paint music medley was AMAZING.

@StageProps, that’s me. 😀
Thanks for your kind words

Daawwww, my news still hasn’t been posted, but almost everything on here is awesome!

SamWibatt said on Jan. 13, 2010

Wow, that’s crazy! A friend of mine went and studied abroad in Japan for a year, back in about 1989. He brought back a bunch of music and made tapes for me, and my favorite song out of the bunch was Furimukeba Kaeru. I had no idea who sang it and the tape is long lost, so I never thought I’d hear it again. Much less find that it influenced an excellent game years later!

doffle96 said on Jan. 14, 2010

I’m not buying that mother 3 mario paint thing for one second. that thing reeks of FRAUD. I know they were using a mario paint inspired program and not the real one… but even so, you can’t use more than 3 instruments at once! and the pigs don’t sound like MIDI 2 patch channel 30 “overdriven guitar”. It’s cool that someone put it together but it’s lame that they did it for the sake of a complete sham.

JudgeDeadd said on Jan. 14, 2010

Technical nitpick: YT link should be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0bqk1DC_IA – cut out the unnecessary crap at the end.

As for Yume Nikki, I know this game and I think it’s relatively popular. It’s also nightmarish… Literally.

PK BLAH said on Jan. 14, 2010

Sadly, that (illegal) VC Inject of Earthbound may be the closest thing we’ll ever get to a VC release of Earthbound… 🙁

I think that Earthbound cart glitch thing happened to my brother’s save file in Mother 3, also (Fortunately, he was only in the beginning)

Dookie said on Jan. 14, 2010

thanks to anyone who listened!
Im working on getting a real drummer and some of my friends on second and third guitar and bass, and then we can have some real fun.

that mother 3 medly just blew mt mind, I may have to figure out some mother 3 now on the guitar and get some songs up

Chrissii said on Jan. 14, 2010

@neonix WOW, that is impressive. I had no idea that was possible, but now that I do I’m definitely going to look into it. We have two Wiis, one for Homebrew and one for not, so I’m not worried about updates interfering with it and such. Any helpful links you can post here about doing this? Or e-mail to me? Thanks 🙂

Elsewise, that Mario Paint VHS looks awesome! I would have totally bought it if it weren’t out of stock by the time I clicked on it. I love that kind of stuff though, I still have all my old preview VHS that Nintendo Power used to send out :3

neonix said on Jan. 14, 2010

@Chrissii gbatemp.net is the my recommended place to go to look for info. Unfortunately, I don’t have direct links to the threads I once got info from, but they are surely a bit outdated by now, and there’s probably much better and more complete tools for modding VC files now than what I originally used. Back when I made that EB channel, you would have to use several different tools to do everything and hope one of them didn’t break it 😛

I actually don’t mind emailing you my completed WAD file so you can install it on your Wii. Shoot me a message at xxxraiderxxx@gmail.com

NekoKnight said on Jan. 14, 2010

@Joshua Johnson: My friend had the same thing happen to him too. And while it’s never happened to me, I remember it happening with other SNES games I played, especially Super Metroid. And it would always happen after the game wouldn’t start the first time I turned on the SNES, but worked on the second try. To be honest, it might even be a problem with the SNES itself. The SNES mini models might be less prone to something like this happnening, but I can’t say.

Chrissii said on Jan. 14, 2010

@neonix That would be fantastic! I’ll be shooting you an email in a minute. If I have the WAD file I think I can figure it out from there 😀

anonymous said on Jan. 15, 2010

the link to download the files is dead. could it possibly be re-uploaded? would it be possible to be uploaded at EBC so it won’t expire?

8BitWalugi said on Jan. 16, 2010

@Joshua Johnson:
Your battery is dead. You should be able to get it fixed by Nintendo for a small price.

Honestly WAD hacking is not that hard…
Get multimod manager and install your wad…
it is that simple…
Everyone has troubles with WAD installing though

and a MOTHER 3 WAD
