Brawl in the Family

This is a webcomic that I think is overlooked a lot by the Starmen.net community, but often contains references to Mother and Earthbound. Awesome Fanart

I’m not sure if people noticed this anywhere before, but I thought it would be a nice story, especially for fanart nuts like myself. At this youtube site i a short video compilation with the Melodies from Mother 1 and the ending song for Mother 2. That’s not what the big deal is though. The artwork in the video is just astounding, and the video description gives a link to rapidshare where you can download all the artwork at once. Granted the last two are kind of suckish, but the rest are really awesome! I’ve attached the rar file with the pictures in it, and at the bottom of the message is the link to the youtube site where I found the link in the first place.s He also states that he originally found them on a Japanese blogger site, but can no longer find the original link. MOTHER Music by Low-Tech Son

Duster and Capoeira

Hi! I’m not sure how related this is to Mother 3 and if it warrants attention, but you might find it interesting.

Duster’s fighting style (and if you ask me, his general attitude and overall style) is very similar to a Capoeirista. Capoeira is an afro-brazilian dance/fight/game marked by large, sweeping kicks and beautiful acrobatic movements, mixed in with subterfuge and trickery. A lot of the movements are very low to the ground, and it is often described by the uninitiated as “breakdance fighting.”

When I first played Mother 3, the more I got to know Duster, the more he reminded me of an “angoleiro”, or a practitioner of the old, “mother” (hah hah) style of Capoeira: Capoeira Angola. The ginga, the fighting stance for Capoeira, has a very broken, loose and almost “drunken” look to it in Capoeira Angola. The player drags his feet, as if he were stumbling, his body loose and ready to move wherever it needs to. Given Duster’s lame leg, and his heavy reliance on kicks, I feel that this syncs up with him almost perfectly! Not only that, but Capoeiristas of old were often outlaws or bandits, sometimes forming gangs in the days after slavery. They carried with them the reputation of being thieves, whether or not the person actually was! They were known for being deceptively dangerous, able to attack and surprise their opponent with great agility from seemingly impossible positions.

I could describe the similarities to you forever, but here’s a video instead. Linked here is a particularly beautiful game of Capoeira Angola, with plenty of trickery and interesting movements. Can you imagine Duster doing any of this? 😉 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqJd3CHncxo

Hey Tomato! I have to say I’m a huge fan of your site and I’ve been a fan of Starmen.net since it was Earthbound.net. Anyway to the point, I don’t really expect this to appear on your site in any form but I just wanted to show it to you and anyone else that is a fellow EarthBound lover! I got this tattoo 3 days ago and I’m so proud of it. I’ve been an EB fan ever since I was 8 years old, and now I’m 21 and I still love EB as much as I always have. I’m planning on getting an entire EB and Mother 3 themed sleeve done. It’ll take a few years though but I’ll finish it. The post about Ozzie Boy made me remember another Ness lookalike I found while looking around the Wii section of gaming shops down here in Australia.

Anyway, here’s the picture:

As far as I know, this game’s only been released in Europe and Australia, dunno about the rest of the world. Probably a good thing, looks like Wii Shovelware title #123325345 😛

Onett arcade Sharks

Hey Mato, it’s kenisu3000. I’ve been playing through MOTHER 2 for about the bazillionth time, and found something that I missed before; and I thought maybe you’d like to add it to the Onett section of MOTHER 2 vs. EarthBound.

You know that Shark in the arcade who says “Spit spit saliva spit, do you want some gum? Get your own, twit.” Well, in the Japanese game he says more or less the same thing, but there’s a note in parenthesis mentioning he’s singing it to the tune of “Hatopoppo,” the nursery rhyme-type song about pigeons.

「ペッペッペッ、つばペッペ。ガムがほしいか、やらないぞ。
　（はとぽっぽのメロディーで）」

I figure the localization team tried to make sure that the joke wasn’t *entirely* lost, by ending it with “twit,” which rhymes with “spit.”

Also, if it’s of any significance, the Shark who greets you automatically after beating Frank says a polite English “Hello!” in MOTHER 2, and a somewhat tougher “Yeah?” in EarthBound. Just wanted to mention that.

Anyway, Mato, I’m loving EB Central more and more each day. I’ve followed MOTHER 2 to EarthBound and Back Again since the turn of the century, and I’m thrilled you’re determined to finish it. 🙂 Thanks for all you do, and keep up the super-awesome work!

Cave Story and Mother 3

The dev was given a DS With Mother 3 and a couple other things.

Agota Kristof novels that inspired M3

Hey Mato,

I learned about these books from a post you did a while back and thought I’d read and for my reviews website. The books are really good, and Mother 3 really did borrow heavily from it, mostly thematically (so sad) and especially with the characters (twins Lucas and Claus–who defects– a dead mother they cannot let go, a quiet but strong cripple). The post-war changes that take place in the hometown are definitely similar to Tazmily’s transformation. It’s probably not something for your site, but I thought you might personally be interested in my review and I definitely recommend you give the collection a read if you can find the time (I burned through it in a couple days). You know how people say they hear “lucas” in the unused Lucas’ Nightmare track? Well they’re hearing something alright and it’s the DCMC intro slowed down. Heres a video with Lucas’ nightmare with the pitch increased.

It’s so odd that a happy concert intro was slowed down into a creepy unused song. This is similar to Mario64 were bowser’s laugh is simply the boo’s laugh slowed down but why the DCMC? Some people have guessed that it might be because Porky used the DCMC’s music to brainwash people but still. I’m not sure if this is old news to people or not but I find it very interesting.

It is a band IAMERROR that has released an album called “Trout Yogurt”. They are a techno band but I guess many would call it “8-bit” techno, though there are elements of grindcore. All the songs on the album are free to download as well! Anyways, I thought you would be interested!
