A True EarthBound Troll

Today is the “Great American Smokeout”, which I guess means it’s also this guy’s birthday 😛

Incidentally, the crow had a cigarette in the Famicom version of MOTHER, but in MOTHER 1+2 it was taken away. Itoi (a notoriously heavy smoker) quit smoking around the time MOTHER 1+2 was being made. I’m guessing it’s just coincidence though, since a lot of stuff censored in EarthBound Zero was left that way for MOTHER 1+2.

As far as I know, every change made for the English version of Earthbound “Zero” except for the English-language text was incorporated into the game for Mother 1+2. In his interview with Lost Levels, the game’s English script writer, Phil Sandhop explains: “In software development, each subsequent version is usually derivative of prior versions. Once the program was changed they would have continued to use the revised program and plugged in their old text modules.”
I’ve just noticed that they even changed Ninten’s sprite. No yellow line on his shirt.

I never understood why this funny little “guy” wears…red stilettos. LOL
If any of you out there are trying to quit today, good on you. I quit almost a year ago and know how tough it is. Well done, Smokey the Crow!

Smokey the Crow vs. Smokey the Bear.

Somebody should do a fan translation for Mother 1 and Mother 2 (EarthBound).

Guess Itoi removed it to avoid being tempted to smoke again. Anybody agree with me?
So guys, I’m playing the Mother 1+2 fan translation and the crow still has a cigarette. Did Mato and the crew add it back in?

Yes, they did! Here’s some more info on what Mato changed in the patch: http://mother12.earthboundcentral.com/#why
Happy b-day smokey! I think that with Mother 1+2 the programmers just dumped the Earthbound Zero data and then put in the Japanese text from the original. Just a theory.
