Tips for Buying EarthBound

July 20th, 2009 | Hacking, MOTHER 3

At long last, a new version of the MOTHER 3 fan translation English patch is out! Version 1.1 of the patch fixes all known typos and fixes most of the known bugs. You can download the patch here. Note that you’ll need to apply the patch to a fresh Japanese ROM.

Many thanks to the testers who helped speed things up, byuu, Jeff, reid, and many others who I had to reassemble like I was a high school reunion committee chairman or something 😛

*but will it do my laundry?*

fnool said on Jul. 20, 2009

Nice. I’ve been waiting months for them to update the “unused content” section, though…

Mato said on Jul. 20, 2009

Yeah, I can only do so many things at one time though 🙁

I’ve actually been hoping that people on the forums would start cataloguing the unused stuff so it’d be easier for me to make posts about it, but at this rate it’s going to be a while. M1+2 takes precedence at the moment now.

Amras Felagund said on Jul. 20, 2009

The first thing I noticed is that the black sesame seeds that appear after the Fan Translation notice are gone! Now I am on to see the rest of the errors that were fixed. Until then… Goo goo g’job, Tomato!

Jeeves said on Jul. 20, 2009

Ah, right when I’m smack-dab in the middle of a playthrough! Oh well, my next one will be even better.

santiagoff said on Jul. 20, 2009

You should also update the Mother 3 fan translation blog on this, even though no one’s gonna read it XD

Mato said on Jul. 20, 2009

Jeeves: regular save files are compatible between the two versions (save states MIGHT be too, but with a .1% chance of vomit explosions) So you should be able to continue your game using the new version if you wanted.

santiagoff: I plan to probably this evening.

Jeeves said on Jul. 20, 2009

Oh, duh. Alright then, no complaints here. Good work!

JamesBond007 said on Jul. 20, 2009

Please, make possible update from already translated 1.0 to 1.1, not only from Japanese ROM.

PikachuMan said on Jul. 20, 2009

I still have my old Japanese ROM, so this is no problem for me.

I planned to play through the game again anyways, so this is pretty good. 😀

Does it fix that one Pig Soldier that says “For-frogive me sir!” in the thunder tower? XD

Mato said on Jul. 20, 2009

No, because that wasn’t a mistake. Look at what he says more carefully 😛

fnool said on Jul. 20, 2009

Mato: Ah, I understand. Even though I’ve been crawling Starmen.net for nigh on seven years now I’ve somehow never registered at their forums, and I was so desperate to find out more about leftover stuff tucked away inside the game that I spent hours perusing a huge forum thread on the topic. I’m obsessed with this sort of thing.

Godspeed on the M1+2 translation.

LeonardoGolden said on Jul. 20, 2009

Hey, Mato, I have a problem 🙁

I downloaded a save file off the froggie library, converted it to english and it won’t work with patch 1.1

Is it me or is it the patch?

Thanks in advance…

IWontGetOvertheDam said on Jul. 20, 2009

That is all.

Mato said on Jul. 20, 2009

LeonardoGolden: How does it not work? Did you remember to rename the file to match the ROM’s name? Like if the ROM is called mother3.gba, then the save should be called mother3.sav (for most emulators anyway). You should also check your settings and make sure the new save file is in the right directory.

LeonardoGolden said on Jul. 20, 2009

Yeah, I did. And never mind, I got it working. Turns out that the M3 Real needs to patch the save before it actually works with Mother 3.

Thanks for the help, though 🙂

Jeagle101 said on Jul. 20, 2009

Finally, i’ve been waiting for this! Ironic that it comes out right after I finished my Boss Walkthrough on this game. I had just finished it yesterday, beaten the game, and now I got another patch to apply!

Whatever. I’ll enjoy playing this game again in the future sometime 😀

Trevor said on Jul. 20, 2009

Looks like you updated the Mother 3 online read-me. Are the “Known issues” the bugs that were fixed in this patch? If so, what are the current “Known issues”?

Mato said on Jul. 20, 2009

The known issues are the remaining known issues. Everything that used to be on there but isn’t anymore was fixed.

Zaxtur said on Jul. 20, 2009

Sorry to be picky, but right away I noticed that Thomas still says “firey” at the beginning of Chapter 1. Isn’t the correct spelling “fiery” or is this intentional?

Wow. I’ve been waiting for this for a while, the v1.0 is more than enough tough.
You sure like to spoil us, Earthbound fans, Mato. Thank you so much. 😀

eisnerguy1 said on Jul. 20, 2009

Thank you Mato!! My previous save works fine with the 1.1 version. Maybe this will motivate me to actually finish the game. Thanks again for all the hard work you, and the rest of the Starmen.net crew did on this patch!

MotMot said on Jul. 20, 2009

Thank you muchly Mato and everyone else that made this possible!

Joshua Johnson said on Jul. 20, 2009

so far, I dont notice any major changes.

Someone Else said on Jul. 20, 2009

Hey, Mato, will you post a list of every change that was made for this version at some point?

Mato said on Jul. 20, 2009

Is there a reason to? “All known typos” is much easier and most of the bugs fixed were unimportant to the average player. Just listing what WASN’T fixed is easier/quicker.

SamWibatt said on Jul. 20, 2009

Woohoo! Mato rules AGAIN!

I was looking for an excuse to play all the way through M3 again, and this is the perfect one!

Thanks SO much.

Kamanashi said on Jul. 20, 2009

Thanks guys. I will probably replay Mother 3 sometime before school starts again, just don’t know when. Still trying to get the time to beat Star Ocean: The Last hope.

Mato said on Jul. 20, 2009

Joshua Johnson: That’s because there aren’t many changes. The game hasn’t changed and I didn’t rewrite the script or anything. Only some typos and bugs were fixed.

Rockin'Ness said on Jul. 21, 2009

Did you change the ”You morin!” text in New Pork?

ZPE said on Jul. 21, 2009

Yay for pingbacks and title errors!

I didn’t play the original patch but now I might as well play through once again only thing time in sweet English. Thanks guys!

Spitball Sparky said on Jul. 21, 2009

Awesome! At Chapter 2 now.

I don’t know if this has been found already or is just some random oddity, but in Chapter 1, I had Flint equipped with some charm of some sort and the little “e” did not appear next to it. I exited the menu several time, progressed a bit, checked again…still not there.

Luigi Papa said on Jul. 21, 2009

Great one!

I would like to see some pics with examples about what´s changed in the new version…

Later, i will update my m3 lite with this new version and maybe start playing again..hehehehe

This is a amazing game, I really enjoyed playing this day after day til the end…

Salad9090 said on Jul. 21, 2009

can mac users actualy SAVE the game now?????

Mato said on Jul. 21, 2009

That’s an emulation issue, not a game issue. Read the readme and check the forums if you’re having save troubles.

bhlaab said on Jul. 22, 2009

Does this fix the slowdown/sound crackle on menus?

cafink said on Jul. 22, 2009

I think all the grammar and typo issues have been pretty well covered on the SM.net message board and elsewhere.

Comparing the online README for version 1.1 to that of version 1.0, it looks like the only glitch that was fixed was the screen of random black dots at the beginning of the game. The version 1.1 README also lists one additional glitch–the gift boxes turning into status icons–but that occurred in the original Japanese version, as well, and so isn’t really an issue with the translation patch.

I notice also that the wording of the “the” glitch was changed. Apparently, it was realized upon the patch’s release that the glitch occurs more frequently than Tomato and the team had realized.

It’s still a heck of a good patch. Thanks for all your hard work, guys.

Mato said on Jul. 22, 2009

There were actually about 15 or so bugs that were fixed – it’s only natural that most of them weren’t on the 1.0 page or else we would’ve had most of them fixed before 1.0 if we knew about them 😛

EmpoleMew said on Jul. 23, 2009

Was one the bugs that were fixed the Aeolia/Ionia name thing?

Mato said on Jul. 23, 2009

Yep, that was fixed.

PKSTARMAN said on Jul. 24, 2009

I finished the Mother 3 game with the 1.1 patch… wow I must be fast!

PKSTARMAN said on Jul. 24, 2009

And yeah… I didnt notice any error now… thinking about the best patch.

PKSTARMAN said on Jul. 24, 2009

I cant wait for the 1.2 patch Mato.

PKSTARMAN said on Jul. 24, 2009

Hey SamWibbat… Mato always rules here and he will everytime. but Jeff man too, DO NOT UNDERSTIMATE THEM. ok?

PKSTARMAN said on Jul. 24, 2009

Mato im sending an article but i cant… its about a guy in youtube.com his username is BarnabasB, if i can send u the message in 10 min then wait it. If not then search it and check it for me… if you like his work then make an article. Hes an Earthbound/Mother fan. In almost all his videos, he puts some Earthbound/Mother stuff in them. Friday 24 (6:55) July 2009. This message was send in this exact day, time, month, and year. Please respond me in this article Mato.

PKSTARMAN said on Jul. 24, 2009

Im the 1 who sent you the Walkthrough information.

PKSTARMAN said on Jul. 24, 2009

I know I sent a lot of commnts but read them please.
Another comment, lol.

Evan said on Jul. 24, 2009

This was pretty convenient, as I had just been in the middle of replaying Mother 3 when this got rereleased. I’m going out of my way to see any possible dialogue I could have missed by doing every single thing I haven’t done, even insignificant things like “You don’t have Kumatora yet so Duster will say this line instead”.

This may sound weird but I did also miss a lot of funny things my first time through, like Pusher’s wife commenting on Lucas and Flint in Chapter 5, and I fought neither Lord Passion nor Squeekz, so…

In this patch did you fix the sound effect made when there is an explosion. In version 1.0 it says BOM when there is an explosion and not BOMB.

Mato said on Jul. 27, 2009

No, it wasn’t changed.

PKSTARMAN said on Jul. 29, 2009

I did not used the Debug room…

Lukas said on Jul. 31, 2009

Awesome but i have problems finding a fresh Japanese ROM.

homestar92 said on Jul. 31, 2009

If you can’t find a japanese rom but you still have your 1.0 patch file, you can just re-apply the 1.0 patch. That’ll revert it back to the original Japanese version.

Personally, I’m playing around with byuu’s patcher to see if I can make a custom 1.0 to 1.1 patch. Not like there’s really a point, just another thing I can say I’ve done.

I remember this one. I was released on my birthday, and it fixed some random crap that was mistyped.

I named Lucas ”Mato” 😀

Pichu474 said on Mar. 24, 2013

I found a bug, but i’m not sure it’s a ROM problem or the emulator

When i’m trying to open the battle memory, the game freezes.
I mean, the spaces (The ones who separates the items) doubles in size, even going into the description box, and the music still plays…
But the first time i played Mother 3 it worked perfectly!
Sorry if i made grammar errors, but english isn’t my first language.

Mato said on Mar. 24, 2013

This is the first time I’ve heard of this issue, so my guess is that it has something to do with the emulator. Or maybe your ROM is oorrupt, or if you used cheat codes, that might cause problems too.
