Tips for Buying EarthBound

June 29th, 2009 | EarthBound, Videos

Jimi let me know about this video about the top 10 SNES RPGs on the That Guy with the Glasses site. This isn’t the Nostalgia Critic doing the countdown himself though, so don’t be confused. See which of your favorite RPGs got on there!

You can also check out the video here, where you can comment on the video.

I’m an RPG failure. I’ve only played the MOTHER series and Super Mario RPG.

chimera said on Jun. 29, 2009

Chrono Trigger, EB, FF IV, Secret of Mana, Mario RPG, Terrinigma, and llusion of Gaia. Nice.

The Great Morgil said on Jun. 29, 2009

I find it ironic that the video is about SNES rpg’s and yet he shows off the GBA version of FFIV.

I would’ve posted that comment on his site, but you have to sign up first, and i don’t feal like doing that.

santiagoff said on Jun. 29, 2009

Wait wat? Disgaea an FFT aren’t RPGS! They’re SRPGS, it’s a differente genre ;o

ScottKO said on Jun. 29, 2009

He showed the hack somebody made of the retro hippie killing himself because he was stuck on the cliff…I saw it on youtube awhile back

BlueLightning said on Jun. 29, 2009

@ IWontGetOverTheDam: me too. 🙁

Chrono Trigger: “Was there any doubt in your mind that this was the best RPG on the SNES?”

Yes ;_;

|I don’t think the creator of that video knew that Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma are part of the same series -__-.

I would have put Romancing SaGa 3 and Dragon Quest VI on this list.

KingDarian said on Jun. 29, 2009

That guy needs a pronunciation lesson, but otherwise it’s a pretty nice list.

Reagle said on Jun. 29, 2009

It was an okay list, at best. FF6 was not on there, and neither was Lufia. If you’re going to include Orge Battle, come on. Look a little harder, sheesh. And he didn’t even mention Terranigma and Illusion of Gaia are in the same series.

Mato said on Jun. 29, 2009

Yeah, I noticed that right away, and I haven’t played either of those two games. Somehow I already knew. The GBA FF4 video and the low-brow video of the hippie-killing-himself hack also seemed odd to include.

But it sounds like the guy is just starting out with this kind of thing, so I’ll chalk it up to that. It’s better to make mistakes and learn than never try at all.

Kirby Phelps (PK) said on Jun. 29, 2009

I’m glad he put in FFIV. I agree it is a very underrated FF game. Maybe not the most underrated RPG ever like he said though. And why the heck did he use a fan made hack scene (with the hippie) during the Earthbound review??

Ayla was bisexual?

Ugh I am so sick of everyone saying that Chrono Trigger is the greatest RPG on the SNES.

Fredrik said on Jun. 29, 2009

I’m starting to think that i’m the only one who played chrono trigger but sort of forgot it half-way through. >_>;

Earthbound Zero said on Jun. 29, 2009

@Fredrik
You weren’t…

I liked it quite a bit , but it it wasn’t totally my thing really.

Not sure how to explain it.

Fredrik said on Jun. 29, 2009

I have the ‘2/3 rpg playing’ disease, which probably helped me to forget it. But “I liked it quite a bit, but it it wasn’t totally my thing really.

Not sure how to explain it.” fits good on me too.

Mistermister said on Jun. 29, 2009

Looks like I’m not the only person who didn’t think Chrono Trigger was mindblowing. It wasn’t terrible, it had some really good songs and a decent story, but the game was pathetically easy. Easily the most overrated RPG on the SNES.

zedrein said on Jun. 29, 2009

I knew it! Even though I don’t necessarily agree with EB’s placement on the list, my psychic powers allowed me to see that it was going to me at #3

Krennthief said on Jun. 29, 2009

How did I know he was going to have Chrono Trigger as his number 1? No matter. It never really interested me, but I’m glad a lot of people enjoy it.

Anthony V. said on Jun. 29, 2009

EB got higher than I thought it would.

Two questions:

1.) What was up with that New Age Retro Hippie killing itself. I dont think that happens in the game does it?

2.) Since when is Ayla bisexual?

EB_Master said on Jun. 29, 2009

Quite honestly, I don’t think this guys knows what he’s talking about at all. He starts off by saying that there’s only one entry per series, but then he includes Terranigma/Illusion of Gaia and Secret of Mana/Evermore. He then tosses out random tidbits of information like “the creators never said they were part of a series,” but really, by his logic, almost all of the Final Fantasy games are not of one series. Really, I think he just did that to make himself look more knowledgeable when really, it just comes off as pretentious. I’m also very confused as to why Ogre Battle is on that list, and why he seems to think that RPGs, SRPGs, and straight up strategy games are all similar genres.

I’m also not completely sure he even played all that far into EarthBound. Everything he mentioned could be found on the back of the box or in any generic review, and half of his video of it was of some bizarre thing I had never seen before. I can’t shake the feeling that he just plugged “EarthBound” into YouTube and grabbed the first thing he saw.

Reagle said on Jun. 30, 2009

Anyway, let’s get back to the Earthbound related. What -is- up with that Earthbound scene he showed? Anyone care to explain?

Deraj626 said on Jun. 30, 2009

@Reagle and Anthony V.
A guy made a hack of a hippey getting stuck on a cliff and killing himself. If you search on youtube, you can probaly find it.

loroca said on Jun. 30, 2009

I know I’m gonna be standing away from the crowd here but I think it’s pretty fair to put Chrono Trigger where it was; it had a pretty complex fighting system (for its time), and was memorable, at the very least. (Also for the bisexual nature of Ayla, I think he’s referring to the “kiss” move that can be used on anyone regardless of gender? Maybe.)

That being said I wasn’t thrilled with the commentary or the supporting arguments for the choices, though I don’t really have a problem with what was chosen, if that makes any sense? 😡

loroca said on Jun. 30, 2009

woah how does that emote translate to such an angry emoticon? D:/

The Great Morgil said on Jun. 30, 2009

@ Will
>> Ayla was bisexual?

In the Japanese versions and the DS retranslation she was.

PK Mt. Fuji said on Jun. 30, 2009

Well I really like Chrono Trigger, a frog slices a mountain in half. And am I the only one thinking that the Sage thought the hippie-hack was real and he does just calls himself the Sage for giggles?

Miles Vialpando (PK ELECTION) said on Jun. 30, 2009

That hippie killing himself… was that actually in the game? I never knew a hippie could spawn there.

Komaru said on Jul. 1, 2009

Wonder why he used footage from TheKirby’s Earthbound Mini-hack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeNxA5wQtOw
Maybe he thought that was actually part of the game?

GoldenEevee said on Jul. 1, 2009

Who knew that EB would be that high up on the list, as #3, I even heard the Spinning Robo music, and of course, I was expecting Chrono Trigger as #1

GoldenEevee said on Jul. 1, 2009

Who knew that EB would be that high up on the list, as #3, I even heard the Spinning Robo music, and of course, I was expecting Chrono Trigger as #1 on the list, but EB as number #3, wow, a LOT of people like EB now….

oinkyescommander said on Jul. 1, 2009

Earthbound should be 2 and CT stays as it is

Master of Ramen said on Jul. 2, 2009

Know what would’ve made the list a little more truthful? If he would’ve said:

“Not only is Chrono Trigger the best RPG on the SNES, it may well be the most OVERRATED RPG EVER!!!”

CMB said on Jul. 4, 2009

UrfBownd at number 3 eh?

Quite honestly I was surprised that it made it that far, usually most people brush EB off as something 5 or lower

I like the fact that he emphasized that it was different because it was set in modern times, cause honestly that gives the game a totally new look for the genre

I have no argument over his list and glad EB got the spot it deserves

Jay6 said on Jul. 5, 2009

Alright, sure. There are many great RPGs for this console, but seriously, the king of all puzzle RPGs doesn’t appear on this list? Lufia II? Lufia II should have made it. That’s my only complaint.

Karma said on Jul. 23, 2009

“Ugh I am so sick of everyone saying that Chrono Trigger is the greatest RPG on the SNES.”

Yeah totally.

Damn the truth. Isn’t it annoying when the overwhelming majority rates something as the best simply because that’s exactly what it is? Damn him for being right. Damn him to hell.

superneku said on Jul. 29, 2009

Well at least Bennet The Sage acknowledges Earthbound’s awesomeNESS (I swear thats not a pun!)

Pyroguy42 said on Sep. 19, 2009

I lost my SNES version of Chrono Trigger and this did’nt help. I think my EarthBound cart killed it.
