Tips for Buying EarthBound

June 14th, 2009 | Audio Stuff, Polls

Last week, we took a look at which MOTHER game had the best main song. Surprisingly, the results were just about even for each game.

This week, let’s keep with the music theme: Which MOTHER music group is your favorite?

You got Ninten, Lloyd (or Loid, whatever), and Ana, who sing at the Live House in EarthBound Zero and also sing to save the world. You got the Runaway Five, who you’re always having to help in EarthBound, but then they come and save your butt a few times later on. And then you got the DCMC in MOTHER 3, which is cool, funky, and one of your team members even plays in it! And of course they save your butt too.

So who will it be?! Which group is your favorite?! Vote here!

POLL: Which is your favoriate music group in the MOTHER / EarthBound series?

Nothing against The Runaway Five, but I’m more of a rock man myself.

I went for Ninten, Ana, and Lloyd simply because I know they’re going to have the least votes. Gotta love the 8-bit band 😉

God, why does Mother3 always get the most votes?
Anyways, I’ll absolutely vote for Runaway Five. Love their music, and how they rescue you from the clumsy robot and send you to Threek.
I also like Ninten, Ana and Loid though.

One of the most memorable parts for me in the first Mother was that stage scene, I like that one the most by far.

Zaxtur said on Jun. 14, 2009

I’ve never really cared for DCMC. They’re not that interesting to me, and their music isn’t as memorable as that of the Runaway Five. The Runaway Five are cool and funny at the same time. Plus they’ve got better music, better outfits, and a better dance routine.

So much more delicious together.

Whoah, Lo, that’s quite a spoilery avatar you were randomly given… heh.

Anyway, I’m not sure who I’m going to vote for. I like them all! I do like the Live House scene in EB0, but I like how the other two bands save your life in various boss battles. Hmm…

Runaway Five never had to deal with roster changes! It’s all about consistency!

Godaigamer said on Jun. 14, 2009

DCMC is good, but my favorite is definitely the Runaway Five. Their concerts are the most entertaining and memorable. I can see them in my mind chasing the spotlight, dancing with Venus, and just spinning around. And the mysterious 6th member adds mystique to the band.

FireStar said on Jun. 14, 2009

Screw Ana singing, I had Pippi sing. I don’t think MOTHER really had a music group, so they’re out of the question. I really can’t decide between the Runaway five and DCMC, they’re both just as awesome!

SmaMan said on Jun. 14, 2009

It was such a close choice for me, I kept going back and forth.

But I ended up choosing The Runaway Five, because The Blues Brothers is one of my all-time favorite movies.

IWontGetOvertheDam said on Jun. 14, 2009

DCMC had far better music, and served a better purpose in the story, as opposed to the Runaway Five, who, while cool, didn’t contribute to the plot of the game.

As much as I wanted to go with the underdog, I could only vote my conscience and go with Runaway Five.

Belasted said on Jun. 14, 2009

And I hate to double-post (this is the first and only time), but IDontGiveADamn, Runaway Five did quite a bit for the plot in EarthBound, as far as I remember.

IWontGetOvertheDam said on Jun. 14, 2009

Hardly. They served as a story advancement to get from one town to the next, they fought a robot via text, and then drove you back to Threed. DCMC, on the other hand, is woven in better with the whole Duster/Lucky/Egg of Light thing.

Blarg said on Jun. 15, 2009

I think you’re all forgetting something: the M1/EB0 “band” used their music to halt a diabolical alien invasion from being fully successful. Had it not been for them, you guys wouldn’t have M2/EB and M3, let alone your Runaway Five or DCMC bands. Besides, most people just go with the generic “hit-to-make-hurt” approach when it comes to defeating final bosses. These guys were creative, soooo, NintenAnaLoid Band (guest starring Teddy) gets my vote.Besides, as Adam already said, this band is fully playable (not just one member either).

All of the bands and musicians of the series rock in the end, so it’s all good.

kalasad said on Jun. 15, 2009

Mother 1 please! I always loved All I Needed (Was You), and have been listening to the lyrics for a while recently. Personally I think Mother has the best music.

I never really cared for the Runaway Five or DCMC, but when those kids just got up on that stage and started singing in the club and everyone was ‘dancing’ with them… I thought that was cool.

But the Runaway Five song is cool, too. P:

Dios de Babilonia: Even when it doesn’t have any of the MOTHER feeling?

RCat said on Jun. 15, 2009

Are we referring to that feeling of quirky charm, lovable characters, and touching, thought-provoking moments? Or are we referring to that feeling of “lol America?” Strange, Mother 3 had plenty of the first 3, even without the same setting. Maybe you should play it again. 😛

Shamu said on Jun. 16, 2009

RCat: No, I’m reffering (or however you spell it) to how it lost its adventure feeling.
And they even now included old men to be as a main character, and I hugely dislike how it changes character to character.
But I only like Kumatora and Duster.
No, I don’t think I’ll be playing it again because it became too perfect.
Maybe you should play it again.

No offence, by the way.

Chuggaaconroy said on Jun. 16, 2009

Mato said on Jun. 16, 2009

mwahaha my plot to start an earthbound fan civil war is working!

RCat said on Jun. 16, 2009

Uh…I think I missed some sort of inside joke. If 2-3 people mildly debating something counts as a war, then I’d hate to see what actual wars are like.

Not to misconstrue your words, but I think you mean free-range feeling. Mother 3 had plenty of adventure. Unlike the other two, it just had more of a set plot track, chapter separation, and it was on one big island. Ocarina of Time managed to be pretty adventurous when all the areas were connected by a large field, though. The chapter divisions didn’t throw off the adventure feeling for me, but if they did you, then oh well.

No offense meant, but I find it a bit silly that you think the the changing character perspectives and the fact that the main characters aren’t all kids affects the adventure or Mother feeling. It’s kinda like saying, “I want Mother, an RPG series known for being different than other RPGs, to stay the same.” The fun thing about this game’s “chosen four” is that they’re a band of “misfits” trying to save the world from a bigger misfit. And Wes was too funny to not like him for being an old man. I find the extra bit of depth added to the main characters really added to the game, and was refreshing, when compared to the other two games where you had- pardon any oversimplifying- a silent hero, a kind, magical girl, a shy, somewhat negative genius, and a 4th guy who used swords but was very different from game to game.

I’m very confused by your last statements. You call the game “too perfect” despite previous indications that it wasn’t perfect at all, you use whatever “too perfect” means like it’s a bad thing, and then you toss my line back at me with an entirely different meaning from mine. Seriously, I really have no idea what you were conveying there.

As it stands, however, I don’t mind if you or other people prefer Mother 1 and/or 2 over 3. I commented because you made the (still silly to me) comment that Mother 3 had no “Mother feeling.” It had PLENTY of Mother feeling; it just served it in a different style. If you prefer eating ice cream in a dish rather than a cone, that’s fine, but that doesn’t change the fact that both still have ice cream in them.

RCat said on Jun. 16, 2009

At the risk of being lame for double posting, I’ll say that I voted for Ninten, Ana, and Loid. I haven’t played Mother 1, so I haven’t experienced the significance of their performance, but it seemed the best way to be neutral between the Runaway Five and DCMC, whom I love equally.

Shamu said on Jun. 17, 2009

RCat: I just said too perfect, how they just used stupid running for moving fast, not skipsands.
They even made each pages for the status and stuff. Yes I know I’m freking detailed, but I also hugely dislike the battle system.
They didn’t include the character to not faint when they’re HP is 0 even if when the battle is over.
Thanks to that, it took FOREVER to defeat that stupi mecha drago.

It would appear as though you’ve chosen to go into the route of nitpicking over everything you didn’t like about Mother 3 rather than explaining why it didn’t have the “Mother feeling.” Rather than comment on those “flaws” that I find to be silly, I’ll just leave you to your ranting.

I voted for DCMC, because they seem to have more character. And, they don’t feel as useless than the Runaway Five, even though they help you with the robot and send you back to Threed. And I personally like DCMC’s music better.

On the matter of the “Mother 3 vs. Mother 1+2” issue, I loved all three games but I understand what Shamu is saying with the feeling of Mother 3. Mother 3 was much more human, where as the first two had Giygas. The first two had a different, darker feeling to them because of Giygas, really. Mother 3 also had much more spoken dialog in it, and it felt more like you were playing a movie. And the plot revolved around a completely different type of issue, like that Giygas was making people attack you, versus how in Mother 3 you had magic involved and were fighting pretty much against capitalism. But the main reason that they felt so different were the subtle changes (Parents becoming important characters, dark text boxes with light fonts vs. light text boxes with dark fonts, different music and composers, magicant vs. no magicant, 8 melodies vs. 7 needles, etc.) that made a surprisingly large difference. Though I miss the musical styles of the first two, and I miss the dark, DARK feeling that Giygas had about him, Mother 3 had a different type of emotional value to it which really balances out the changes. I never really felt Ness, and Mother 3 gave its characters much more character which made it in ways more emotionally powerful than the first two. Though all three were amazing and I don’t prefer Mother 3 over the first to or vice versa, I can’t deny that they are different, and Shigesato Itoi even admits that they are. I think that’s what Shamu was trying to say. But I loved all three.

N0 3y3 d33r said on Jun. 20, 2009

DCMC, just because, well, first off, the music of the era had become “better” and less digitalized for the Gameboy advance than the SNES, and although the Runaway five did dance, but it seemed the runaway five really were just about the dancing, Just two guys dancing to music and playing a little song, but their songs were short, DCMC was only heard when they do a short encore before they leave, and their second performance is cut short, I have a feeling that they actually played songs that weren’t 1 minute long, and the fact they didn’t specifically focus on the singers, but sort of treated all their members as necessary players, they were so upset at losing their bassist Lucky (identity marked as spoiler).

Sure the Runaway Five and DCMC are cool and all but I have to go with Ninten, Loid, and Ana simply because of the catchyness of the song “All that I needed was you”, seriously its one of the best pieces of Mother music there is, it even got to be one of the vocal tracks for the soundtrack, and it has to be one of the best forgotten tracks that was never carried over to the other two games. I simply love listening to it.

so, even though I’ve only watched Earthbound 0 on Youtube, I know that the song is awesome, so I’m going with Mother 1/Earthbound 0’s band for the awesome “All that I needed was you” song.
