Tips for Buying EarthBound

April 5th, 2009 | MOTHER 1+2, Uncommon Knowledge, Videos

For years, there’ve been rumors that you could leave the Cave of the Past by using the Exit Mouse. But the rumors were always vague, it wasn’t clear if it worked in MOTHER 2 or MOTHER 1+2, or what.

This glitch really does exist, but only works with MOTHER 1+2. The port programmers made sure that you can’t use the Exit Mouse in the Cave of the Past, but they forgot to make the Exit Mouse not work in the intestine-y room right before Giygas. Here’s a video I made of this glitch in action:

As you can see, the game’s already set things up for the prayer cut scenes, so places like Ness’s house and Summers are a bit different. The Runaway Five are in Summers even, though they don’t say anything if you try to talk to them.

The rumors also said that once you use this trick, you’re stuck and can’t go back to the past. But it looks like if you go back to Saturn Valley, you can redo the whole robotization sequence again and then return to the past, so I think that part of the rumor is wrong.

If you’d like to see this for yourself, here is a MOTHER 1+2 save file with Ness and co. at the last part of the game, with the Exit Mouse in Ness’s inventory at the bottom right. In the past, I always had a really hard time finding ANY MOTHER 1+2 save files, luckily GameFAQs user I_Was_Right was kind enough to post a save file at the end of the game a few months ago, which made this post and video possible.

M1+2 sure seems to have more glitches than the originals, eh?

Why are the items in english?

Tansunn said on Apr. 5, 2009

That is very surreal, hearing the prayer music as you walk around.

TRoEP: So that people could see that I was using the Exit Mouse.

Millhouse said on Apr. 5, 2009

Okay, so is Ness’ sprite dofferent in M2, or is it different in the GBA version 1+2, or is it different because you messed with it?

santiagoff said on Apr. 5, 2009

Mato , is it me , or does Ness t-shirt look different on the gba version?

Mato said on Apr. 5, 2009

Probably video compression. People used to say the same thing whenever I had a video of Lucas. Fine details like the striped shirts don’t work well with video compression + YouTube.

“intersine”? Hm

Wilhelmina said on Apr. 5, 2009

Oh whoops, that above comment was me. Haha, anyway. I love how the music stays as the prayer music, too. 😀

And so, ness wasted too much time getting to giygas, that he launched the missile of doom anyway, effectively ending the war against Giygas with inneumerable casualties. Giygas then proceeds to destroy the solar system, and then the universe, all because ness used an exit mouse on that fateful day.

Paradox much?

Aurilliux said on Apr. 5, 2009

“Holy cow, Giygas is creepy! Exit mouse, find me the nearest space-time teleporter!”

“The exit mouse found the way out and waved for you to follow.”

Man, I need to find me one of *those* exit mice.

This reminds me: Ever try using the debug menu to walk around outside of Ness’ house after the credits? The rest of the world is just like the beginning of the game. All events are reset, Winters and Dalaam have their intro music playing. Kinda cool, kinda similar.

rayefrenzy said on Apr. 5, 2009

Man, the music/sound effects for the GBA version suck, IMO.

LeonardoGolden said on Apr. 5, 2009

Hey, Mato, is that the patch you posted sometime ago?
You know, the “Mother 1+2 Menu Patch”

Alxprit said on Apr. 5, 2009

@Spitball Sparky; the only difference is that no normal enemies are anywhere.

Spitball Sparky said on Apr. 5, 2009

@Alxprit; Just like the beginning of the game. Before Pokey pesters Ness, no enemies.

KingMike said on Apr. 5, 2009

Heh, reminds me of Final Fantasy. The only way to exit the last dungeon (on NES and PS1, at least) was to use magic. Though it didn’t really make sense with the plot, we could just say “because it’s magic”.
(though I hear the GBA version allowed you to walk out. It’s still magic?)

Mato said on Apr. 7, 2009

I already mentioned that it only works with Mother 1+2 though 😯

Mato said on Jun. 12, 2009

This is one of those things that should be fixed for the possible English translation of Mother 2 in Mother 1+2

shibaru said on Jan. 10, 2010

So uhhh… How does the save file work?

Labrynian_Rebel said on Jun. 5, 2010

This should definatly be in the Mother 1+2 translation, it’s that awesome! XD

Someone or other said on Jun. 1, 2011

Will the save file work with the translation patch?

Mato said on Jun. 1, 2011

It should, there’s no encoding differences between the translated M2 and the original M2.

RadicOmega said on Nov. 1, 2011

I’ve tried to do this on My Mother 1+2. Nothing happened. I’m pretty sure it only works for the ROM

TheDreaminghawk said on Jun. 27, 2012

I did this the other day on cart. Pretty freaky how it drops you anywhere on the map. I was sent all the way to pink cloud…

Ness said on Oct. 26, 2012

Exit mice are like Bill Nye the science guy.
